Chris Carr Park, Huntington Beach, Orange County, California, USA. A small flock of 8-10 birds squawking & eating in a tree. I didn't see them at first, & it was the noise that they made that originally drew my attention to them. As you might imagine, spotting birds that are predominantly green against a green background can be really difficult! 🙂

On additional observations it is a COHA, because the hawk has a waist, in other words, the tail is not an extension of the body. Nelson Briefer.

I love that zoom-out at the end to put the scene into perspective. The whole time, I thought I was watching a single Brewer’s blackbird foraging, on an urban patch of grass, maybe a park… but you zoomed out and it was surrounded! 🤩 Besides the gulls I see and obvious widgeons I hear, am I seeing some type of goose, as well? Emperor geese? Also, are those night-herons or some type of egret…? I can’t tell. Thanks again.

After putting up 3 bird feeders in the backyard, I have mocking birds, cardinals, and for the first time, these little ones have come. They're all just so happy with these feeders in the big magnolia trees, and they're actually great neighbors for us and with themselves. 🙂

Yes! This video proves harriers are what are flying over the fields around my place this spring in NW Oregon. The ones I’ve seen are very light underneath with black wing tips like the one at 3:15

This obnoxious little dude kept me up all night singing the song of his people. That got me on the trail of which birds sing at night and are resident in SoCal. Tada, the Northern Mockingbird, AKA the most annoying thing on Earth. Haha I kid, their song is beautiful, just wish they chose a better time of day.

i'm in socal I have desert cottontails running around my backyard, today I observed them playing this game of "bullfighting" one charges at the other one who jumps straight into the air and flips around mid-air to face another charge, simply adorable... had to look up what kind of rabbits we have here and these look exactly like mine, cheers from Escondido

I have my doubts that that hawk an accipiter was a Cooper’s Hawk. I’m leaning toward American Goshawk, with some strong reasoning. Nelson Briefer - NG Specialist. Anacortes, Wa.

I agree, Nelson. What do you think of the possibility of it being a Sharp Shinned Hawk? The wing flaps seem too quick to be a Cooper's hawk. I would love to hear what your thoughts are about it being a goshawk!

Great comparison. Lot's of birders confuse these two species. I've been to this location. I can't remember though if it's the south end of San Diego Bay near Imperial Beach or the south end of San Francisco Bay. Or it could be Bolsa Chica. I know I've been here though.

This is the finest collection of Northern Harriers in flight, thank you. I work next to Minnehaha Creek, a tributary of the Mississippi near Minneapolis, Minnesota. Last week I saw an odd predatory bird in a dead tree a couple hundred meters away across some railroad tracks and their embankments. Something else was moving in a crotch higher up, to my surprise, a Piliiated Woodpecker flew out towards the cover of the nearby creek. A second Piliiated came flying in from another dead tree that was nearby, leading me to believe there is a nest in the tree. At this time the raptor kind of floated up from it's perch lower down, this is when I realized I was looking at a beautiful gold chested female with her dark wingtips. I was amazed and uncertain if the harrier had trapped the young in their nest, this is mid September I don't know when the young Piliiated fledge. As I watched, fretting for the baby woodpeckers the episode came the most ridiculous conclusion. From across the creek, way down the tracks, comes a squawking Bluejay! Flying in to chase the harrier away and down the creek to look for something a little more normal to eat. I feel super fortunate to live on the Mississippi Flyway. I have seen birds doing some of the weirdest most unexpected things, the intelligence and curiosity that I observe is matched only by their beauty.
