Outdoor Shower Bag for Camping or Off-Grid
This is our new off-grid outdoor shower setup, which we use all year, even in winter. It's perfect for off-grid showering or showering while camping, especially in situations without running water.

Harvesting Jerusalem Artichokes in the Spring at That Yurt
Переглядів 3384 роки тому
Last year I did a test run and planted 10 jerusalem artichoke tubers from the store to see if they would grow. Boy did they! The flowers grew about 8 feet tall and in the fall I cut the stalks down, but left the jerusalem artichokes to overwinter in the ground so we could harvest them in the spring. I was excited to see how much they had multiplied. From those 10 initial sunchoke tubers we plan...
Yurt Life Dispatch: Spring Snow in Southern Vermont

Here's an update on yurt living in Vermont, where we just got about 6 inches of snow in the final week of March. Winter has supposedly passed, but the weather says otherwise. Looking forward to spring in the yurt and a number of garden projects, including our annual vegetable garden, seeing how our perennials fare, and also awaiting the first fruiting of our oyster mushroom logs. And we might g...

Off-Grid Solar Setup at That Yurt (PowerFilm + Goal Zero)

Here's a quick walkthrough of our 180-watt solar panel and battery setup at our off grid yurt. We have two portable solar panels, both of which are from PowerFilm Solar. One is a rollable panel, rated at 60W; the other is a foldable panel rated at 120W. These two panels feed into a battery from Goal Zero, the Yeti 400, which stores 400Wh. This is plenty of power for the basic needs: charging ph...
Humanure Compost Update at Our Off-Grid Yurt
Переглядів 5835 років тому
We compost EVERYTHING at our yurt, and this includes the contents of our outhouse bucket. Composting poop took a little getting used to, if I'm being perfectly honest-particularly the process of emptying the compost toilet buckets into the compost bins. But we got over that really quickly. And now I check on the payoff for our humanure composting system. Our compost bins are built with pallets ...
Planting Jerusalem artichokes from the grocery store
Переглядів 7 тис.5 років тому
Can you plant jerusalem artichokes from the store? Heck yes. Also known as sunchokes, jerusalem artichokes are a perennial flower that grows wicked tall and produces edible tubers, perfect for an edible garden or permaculture food forest. From the local food coop here in Vermont, the jerusalem artichokes I bought were $6.99/lb. I recommend sourcing them from a local grocer or farmer. However, i...

Yurt Dispatch: Garden Update

Yurt Dispatch: Covering Garden Plants for Late April Freeze

The last frost date where we live is around May 6, so it's no surprise we got a freeze in late April. Still, we weren't totally prepared, so had to go buy a floating row cover for the 36 plants we'd just put in the garden. It was the first time I'd used a floating row cover, and I'm now in love. Note that I put a few buckets underneath because I wasn't sure how heavy the frozen condensation wou...
Shiitake Mushroom Log Inoculation with Plug Spawn

Here's our first mushroom log inoculation, using plug spawn from North Spore Mushroom Co in Maine. For this first trial run, we got a 100-pack of shiitake plug spawn (just inoculated dowels) to hammer into a beech log. The process is remarkably straightforward and excellent for beginners. Now that we've learned how to inoculate logs, we liked it so much that we just ordered a 500-pack of oyster...

All good oh good except where does your water come from? Is it gravity fed? Is it a hose from a house? You need 2.3 psi in order for that system to work so how do you get your water? I watch so many of these videos and nobody ever shows how they get the water.

One tuber can turn into 75-200 in one year. So, if 1 turns into 100 the 1st year, that's 10,000 the second year and 1,000,000 the third year, 100,000,000 the fourth year and 10,000,000,000 at the end of the 5th year. That's a great survival food source!
