I seen that video to. That’s insane to charge that for bagged mulch. Glad you responded to that video. He does have some good content but he seems like he’s another misleading salesman on UA-cam. That’s what happens to a lot of people they get some traction on UA-cam and later try to be an influencer. My list of people I watch is getting shorter and shorter. I wonder does he pull weeds, apply pre emergent, and everything that goes with it. He’s a crook at that price point. I looked at what he did and ran my numbers and it seems I’d be around $170-220depending on time. I use triple processed bulk mulch and don’t mess with bags at all unless they request it. Good video appreciated you calling things out. Not everyone in this industry is a crook.
That's amazing! 😂
I charge $130-150 per yard, I try to stay away from the bagged mulch as it always seems like junk, my bulk supplier has great looking mulch and my customers love it
1- I would not over charge customers and take advantage of them 2- most of them would laugh me all the way back to my truck! I watched that video and watch most of Johnathon’s videos, he seems like a great guy, ex cop, very smart, I think he may have been heavy on the click bait on that one, if he did make that much then good for him, I would want to think he wouldn’t rip folks off! Great talk and topic
@@eddieh6429 yeah Eddie, I want to make money but want to be fair with people. Charging that for that particular job giving the time it took as well. I’ll say this I wouldn’t have charged that much.. maybe $125-140 i would consider fair for both sides. Not $230 for 30 minutes of work..maybe not outrageous but definitely on the high side to charge someone for sure
I don’t think it’s a problem someone charging the price they are asking for their experience and value. This includes those on the high end or the other extreme at the low end. People are at different levels in their business. I view anything to do with garden beds as in the landscaping area which should be a higher price than lawn care mowing. I don’t think the customer is being taken advantage. They can see the prices on the internet for materials. You can pay a teenager to do the same job for almost nothing but you won’t get the same quality. You also lose with customers on some jobs like you showed on your video. Do you feel the customer took advantage of you? You make good money in your lawn care business and your wood business. I expect your prices will go up in time and you will find the clients that can support your business. Yes catchy titles will bring in more views. We see this everywhere besides UA-cam. Your points are valid for those who may be just starting out in this type of business.
@@ErnestPerez-rg2uo thanks Earnest, overall I agree with your assessment.. I just don’t think laying 30 bags of mulch is worth charging that much $ .. just my opinion on that particular service..
thats how i do 90% of my leaves
This is correct? Is there no problem with the grass if you destroy the leaves and leave them there?
@@aviariojosemota5294 no problem with the grass, some will say it’s actually good for the grass/soil. A lot of the leaves flies away too..
@CBeason great thanks.
Great job 👍🏽
Do you not have a mulching kit on your deck? The reason it works better to back over them is the leaves spend 3-6x more time under the deck interfacing with the blades. A mulch kit will do the same thing driving forward. Mulching kit - more blade guides under the deck and an adjustable exit chute (you can close it, or it is always closed). There is not a mulch kit offered for my Spartan 54" deck, so I have to back over the leaves.
@@Kettenhund75 hey Kyle , makes sense on mulching blades. I’d rather not have them on lazor z.. I’m looking at vertex stand on. I’ll probably get a mulching system on it..
Going backwards on a mower definitely works better. Turns leaves to powder despite the blades used. 1730$ is a great day! Good video
@@M3MAX thanks max!
Nice job with the lawnmower mulching down the leaves. Nice time of the season to have a good working day in weather that is pleasant versus the summer heat. The rain will give you some rest away from mowing. I’m sure you welcome those unplanned off days. Nice plan to get some property and build on it. You are someone who can make it happen.
Thank you as always for the encouragement! I’ll probably sleep later but will be splitting wood most of the day tomorrow
Great setup with the wood, I think it could be very successful on that busy road.
@@willoleary6084 thanks Will! You live in Auburn right? I do feel like it will do well especially when it gets colder
Cool video. Thanks for putting it together. I liked that you talked about plant and shrub fertilization. I should've been offering that as an add on service years ago but only started doing it last year. Once I suggested it I was surprised at how many clients were willing to have it done. Also stated offering fall pinestraw maybe 3 years ago and many wanted that service as well and I was already doing spring pinestraw for the same folks. Nothing wrong with asking people. The worst is that they might say "no thanks."
Ive never worked with pine straw. Pra gravel/River rock and mulch is more common. How does that pine straw hold up to storms and wind? Looked good i really liked the straw look when you got the full front of house view. I start a landscape project tomorrow first since hip reolacemnt. 2.5;yards triple process black mulch. Gonna be a simple job but glad to get back out there. I charge $55 hour labor and cost x 2.5% for material. We do more landscaping than mowimg. I always say mowimg pays the bills and landscaping fuels growth.
@@BENNHENDRICKS33 hey Ben , yes the mulch was more popular in North Alabama where I’m from originally. The straw is more affordable overall than mulch. Both have some advantages over the other. Really just preference, if it’s recently put down and rain hadn’t pressed down the wind can blow it if exploded. It doesn’t get washed like mulch can as easily. I enjoy doing landscaping. If I didn’t have so many maintenance accounts I’d probably push for more of them. That’s good money on landscaping what you charge
@@CBeasoni might try to push some here to try it out. I like the look of it. Landscaping is great for the profit margin if done right, more labor intensive.
Looks great!
I do this puffing up too. Really looks good at first but first rain that shit falls flat
@@gcturfpros true, every so often I’ll come back around and re puff if possible..
We all know the 11th commandment. Happy wife equals happy life! Your daughter is so cute. She has your eyes. I have one daughter myself. I had to study your products out there. I didn’t know the difference between straw and hay. What type of fertilizer do you use for the garden plants and 3 digit numbers? I saw one lawn care woman in Canada. She takes her plants out of the container and puts it in the hole like you. Then she sprays the roots with water before she adds the soil to fill up the hole. After she plants them all then she will water again. I use that extra step now when I plant.
@@ErnestPerez-rg2uo thank you my friend, agree on those things haha. She is growing too fast!! Not sure the numbers it’s a blend they call turf special that can be used on plants/shrubs.. it has a lot of slow release. Yes the owner has irrigation in the beds so he will make sure to water daily for several days. You do have to use the soil addition. The soil is hard red clay in a lot of areas so need some good soil to go with the rootball
Those look more like gumdrop shapes and less pointy than a Christmas tree shape.
Great video brother. A bunch of my accounts had natural areas where i could blow leaves into. I'd let my clients know that I'd keep the same wkly price to take care of the leaves. It might take me an extra 10-15min to take care of their leaves vs. doing a regular mow job but I'd only being using one piece of equipment so that was alright with me. Some homes I'd blow them into a pile in some obscure place on their property and for a final visit of the year I'd mulch them all up. Pinestraw I'd always double the price to install and add 30$ for delivery. Always long leaf. Slash was strictly for erosion control and one off projects.
@@M3MAX that s a good idea on straw with the $30 fee Max. I’ve done some jobs in past where not putting out many bales so end up doing a fair amount of work for little money. I was actually thinking about that a few weeks ago to avoid that happening. I don’t do a lot of straw. Mainly only in fall and winter time..
Your signs are perfect. Most signs people make can’t be read from the street because they make them too small. So do you use hay for mulch during the winter time to protect the shrubs? I haven’t seen anything like that in our area.
Thanks Ernest I feel like they will help bring in some buyers. Yes using hay is a good idea to insulate certain flowers/shrubs that you cut back to provide protection from the cold.. don’t do slot but I will recommend it
There’s a few lawncare companies in my area who have a truck/leaf vac system and trailer, only way I would consider that is if I had multiple apartment complexes and multiple business buildings, those setups are very expensive, just for the vacuum you looking at $5-10k depending on how big/how big of motor ect.
Makes sense will the city pick up leaves in your area?
@@CBeason yes, the city comes 3 times to vacuum leaves
Man you have a really nice setup for selling firewood, that should do well! I hardly ever put pine needles down, when I do I usually charge $11-12 per bell installed
Thanks Eddie! Yes I think I should get a lot of sells soon and for years to come hopefully.. what do you pay for straw. I wish I could get 11-12 . Some people may be willing but majority won’t pay that much
My customers know that when I come out to do a clean up, I charge double, if a lawn is $60 I charge $120, because it takes longer blowing out beds, natural areas, I figure it takes twice as long, twice the price, in the fall months I consider everything a Clean up cut
@@eddieh6429 makes sense Eddie! Do you blow beds out everytime? I normally wait till after leaves fall then I’ll blow them out unless customer asks otherwise
@ in the fall months I do to get all the leaves out I can, if a customer just wants me to go over the lawn for regular price I do, but most of the time it’s a fall cleanup!
A fall cleanup lead cleanup is way more than mowing and blowing leaves around I charge minimum $250 for fall cleanup, for the first hour, then I charge $55 an hour after that. I’ll let the client know where I’m at on time and an accurate estimate on time to do the work. If your blowing out beds, removing sticks other debris it can be time consuming, especially when leaves are in shrubs or whatever. I won’t be doing gutters as I am still recovering from hip replacement and don’t feel comfortable on a ladder. I don’t have dump fees for leaves, as I have acreage here so I dump it at home, or in my personal garden.
@@BENNHENDRICKS33that’s a really good rate Ben. Doubt I could get my normal customers to pay that but if it’s a one time cleanup maybe. Do you have to haul them off? Or does city pick up?
@ I haul them off. I have acreage in the country so I dump them on my land and avoid dump fees. My fall cleanups cover leaf removal, beds, any tree branches that are down, and shrubs if applicable. I will work with regular clients if the job isn’t that big and the leaves and can mulched into the grass or blown into a wooded area. In that case I’ll charge double the mow. I don’t generally slit out the double the mow price all the time, because I feel it adds room for them to request odds and ends and avoids the extra price conversation. My guess would be you get around do a lot of the extra stuff in fall since it appears your maintaining them throughout the year. (I don’t I give estimate on that when it’s needed)
One dollar per minute I’m there over the allotted time for the property for leaves. Works good for me
Good idea, I assume you let your customers know ahead of time about extra leaf charge?
@ Oh yeah. If they are a leaf yard. Say I have a 45 buck yard and I’m there 30 extra , it’s 75. Still maintaining my dollar per minute rate that I look for
I would forbid anyone to so much as touch my blooming plants with pruning shears...only cut wild shoots with the loppers and leave everything else intact..they should only be trimmed when not in bloom. Otherwise, a very neat job.
Hey do you have dot numbers on your trucks. I just bought a single cab isuzu npr. Not sure if I need to or can stay under the radar. I only cut part time and have a full time job.
Hey man I don’t believe so, at least here in Bama.. where do you live?
@CBeason I'm in south Georgia. I mostly stay close by and never get on interstates
@@felawncareservices8399same here, I don’t it’s required for it in Bama. Yes seems like I’ve heard Georgia is more strict when it comes to that . decals and getting checked
How much do the Walker C19 Mower cost used?
Holy smoke! That was a lot of bushes. Another job well done from the bush master!
Thanks Ernest! Keep thinking I’m gonna run out of bush work but they just keep on coming!! Haha
Fantastic work on your video! I see a lot of potential, but it could use some optimization to reach a wider audience. I can help you enhance your SEO-let’s improve that title and description!
The right mower for the right clientel is everything.
I personally got away from bagging lawns 6-7 years ago. Only had a 21 Honda to bag with back then and couldn't get folks that wanted bagging to understand that it was gonna be an upcharge for bagging. Do you upcharge for that? If so how much would you charge for a lot the size of your home to bag it? Say it's a 50-60$ wkly cut, what percentage more would it be for you to bag it? Also curious because hopefully will be moving to the Birmingham suburbs early 2025.
The pond was looking beautiful until you blew the leaves in the pond. That would be a place to use your bagger on the walker. Personally I would not blow them into the pond.
@@ErnestPerez-rg2uo I agree Ernest, It does sink after a little while.. so it clears up.. I guess as long as customers don’t mind I’ll blow it in them
I haven’t had any complaints on blowing leaves in ponds, I have had them mention blowing leaves in the storm drain before, I try to avoid blowing anything in storm drains but sometimes you can’t help it
@@eddieh6429 yeah man, I do the same with the storm drains. If the city or customers don’t complain I’ll continue to do it if it speeds things up..
Right before I went in to business for my self back in 1996-97 I worked on the grounds crew for Duke energy McGuire nuclear station, they used Kabuta and Toro, we put the bagging system on beginning of fall, they were kinda like your walker, they had hydraulic dump and made for easy use, I don’t run bagging system for my business, great topic, the mowers we used were 3 cylinder diesel engines, they were unstoppable
@@eddieh6429 tractor style mowers? Yeah the John Deere 495 was a 3 cylinder diesel. I loved the sound of it haha
Battery powered equipment never appealed to me, but i spent a lot on fuel / oil mix really got me thinking of adding battery powered equipment for jobs where it’s more efficient and not run my costs up.
@@BENNHENDRICKS33 yeah if you’re running or using the combi motor a lot throughout the day I would stick with gas but the trimmer attachment only last a while..
A lot to learn in chemical applications, trying to learn more about it now, wouldn’t mind adding it.
@@BENNHENDRICKS33 yeah Ben , definitely do especially if your planning to stay solo. A lot of guys will stop mowing altogether and just do treatment/fertilizer. It’s easier and frankly can make more money tbh
Good video, multiple income streams is important.
I usually wait till after the first of the year to buy new equipment
@@eddieh6429 got ya Eedie! I assume you try to have everything you need before the season gets started? I meant to make that statement
@ yes Or have everything serviced and ready to roll
I'm not currently looking for a new mower. I picked up a used commercial mower in early spring. You mentioned looking into a stander as your next mower purchase. Guess the only thing I could add is that on my purchase I went with a stander. Couldn't have been happier with its performance. Took about a week to get its maneuverability down. I feel like it is definitely easier on the body. Also don't have to hit low hanging branches head on as much when using it. Can squat down and still operate it under trees. It's a Scag 52. Also have a Scag 36 walk behind and Exmark 30 push. I know some guys like to run just one mower size but the areas I work in run from small to large size properties. Its been working out well for me to run all of those and I don't have to have them all loaded up every day out mowing. I should've gotten a stander like 4 years ago. I'd recommend adding one to your setup.
@@M3MAX yeah max, I’m really looking forward to trying the stander
Have you ever considered experimenting with over seeding with perennial winter rye grass in early fall season? This will have your lawn or your customers with a green lawn all winter. This will in time give you some business cutting lawns in the winter months. The color can be beautiful and it grows aggressively with little watering after it’s established. It comes back naturally every year since it’s a perennial.
Hey Ernest, very rarely. It does look good but it’s not gonna work if your doing treatments so if you decide to use the rye when it dies off you could have a lot of weeds in the turf since you didn’t use any preemergent for the rye to grow. That’s the risk using the rye grass in winter 😊
@@CBeason That is true especially since you spray twice a year.
How many times per year do you blanket spray with selective? I know on some labels they say like no more than 2 blanket apps per year but it just seems way more effective and efficient than spot treating
Hey Amos , I do 4 preemergent/blanket sprays per year 2 in late winter/early spring then similar in Fall.. really depends on weed coverage and the cost of the selective if your considering blanket over spot treatment. The msm or manor I mentioned is cheap and fairly effective against most broadleaf weeds so I go ahead and put it in my solution this go around
I usually it doesn’t bother me but this time it hits a nerve when or if I hear someone voted for her, it’s very simple you have 2 choices GOOD vs EVIL NOTICE I DIDNT SAY PERFECT VS EVIL, no one is perfect Just my little 2 cents 🤷🏻♂️
@@eddieh6429 good point Eddie, I agree , looks pretty good for Trump as of now. Hopefully continue into the night
You should know who I voted for, same guy you voted for, I have the br700 and if I’m doing a fall cleanup I use my Billy goat walk behind blower, it really comes in handy when I have a lot of leaves to move
