I haven't played this song in months, maybe 2 or 3 years. Gave it a go. It's fast, and not a great one to play after jumping off the couch because one's little sister asked via text if I played any Hendrix songs, lol.
I thought I was doing pretty well with it until around 2/3rds of the way when I flubbed a fill and then lost a stick immediately afterward. Got the stick back somewhat smoothly and continued on. I sometimes go several sessions without losing a stick...and then sometimes I get the drops and lose several. I can't explain it, it happens.
Mitch Mitchell was a fantastic drummer. A lot of Hendrix songs are difficult to nail down because he was so good...almost understated, even among a lot of drummers.

Confession - this is the first time I've ever played this song, lol. Not perfect, but good enough, IMO. I've heard it a few thousand times though, so I wasn't too unfamiliar. It's one of my favorite 80s songs, even though I grew up in the 80s and hated most of the music at the time. Now, it's nostalgia and enjoyable. It's crazy how aging works.

I hadn't played this song in years! Flubbed a little in a spot or two, but nothing major. They did a great cover of the original, IMO.

I really liked the original version by Nick Lowe when I was a kid. Letters to Cleo did an honest cover of the song, IMO. Fun to play!

I think I prefer the live version (I think the only live version) of them playing this at Hyde Park - they rock out a bit more. I didn't think that version would record too well, so I went with the studio version. Anyway, it's one of my favorite songs, so I figured I should record my interpretation.

This was originally a Buddy Holly song. This version, obviously, has a much, much different arrangement! Fun one to play. Bouncy is how I'd describe it.

WARNING - do not watch if you have a short attention span, this is a LONG song, lol. A good one to kind of put on in the background, IMO. Ok, disclaimer aside, I haven't played this one in a while. It's much more jazz than rock. I stick to the template but improv a lot of things. It's fairly close to the recording though, I think. I dabble in jazz-ish drums, but I just don't have that mindset a...

This is the RUSH cover of The Who classic. I recorded this one twice. This is the second version (I jacked up the stereo on the second). It's probably the best sound I can get with the song. Geddy Alex, and Neil were each fantastic musicians.

I don't know how I missed this one a year or two ago when I recorded a bunch of Zep songs. Anyway, it's one of my favorites...along with 20 other Zep songs. lol. This was a telework lunch break recording. I came into it totally cold. I'm sure it helps that I've been drumming Zep songs since I was 15 - which was 35 years ago.

I don't know what it is with this song. It's so damn ominous and haunting. The rhythm guitar (Keith, I'd think) just drives that one note/chord into my soul during the verses. I'm a drummer, so I really don't know the technical terms. My fancy do-dads on the jam block in the beginning didn't seem to come through very much on the recording. Oh well. The cowbell parts are played via a foot pedal.

Killer sound and groove. Thanks man
Nice job my man add another sub to your total
Sick!
Thanks! That album has so many songs that are great to play on drums!
What is it called when you make that sound on the snake... Releasing it on the upbeat I think?
I think you might mean the hi-hat cymbals? I call it a bark, or as Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers calls it, "pea soup"...which is an apt onomatopoeia.
Congratulations, first drummer ever to figure out the elements of the groove. You've got them all in there. Most people don't seem to realize that there is no real overall pattern to the elements. Thanks for the studio take as the live performances, in true Gratefull Dead fashion, were never the same. 😉 Excellent vibe excellent groove!!
Thank you very much! The only part of the song I try to play with any structure is the chorus. For all of the other snare drum rat-tat-tat bits, I just kind of go by feel and follow the melody/lyrics and mix and match things to fit the beat. I likely don't play it the same way twice, much like the Dead! The snare would've sounded a little smoother if I played it traditional-style, but I didn't in this recording. I play it both ways depending on my mood. Matched grip is superior, IMO, for moving around the set. Traditional grip shines on subtle snare drum work. It's a weak spot in my playing, but I've gotten better at it over the years.
Travolta has nothing!!! 🥰
I know Charlie Watts has a style different from the band but do you actually enjoy playing The Stones’ music?
Very much so! The Stones can get a little repetitive to me if I play a bunch of songs in a row, but I very much enjoy Charlie's playing! I enjoy Ringo also. People don't give him enough credit, but he was a lefty playing right-handed, and he came up with such great quirky fills that fit with the songs so well. They were each perfect drummers for their bands, IMO.
Also, he has been (no lie) been playing and/or 5:11 experimenting with drum sounds for 40+ years…
My big bro NEVER does it wrong and if he does, he conceals it like a ninja 😂
I do it wrong a lot of the time, l don't think I did in this song though, lol. Anyway, the trick is a quick recovery. Only drummers and bassists would likely hear, or care about, any initial screw up.
Dad calls Jack this. Very appropriate and much love!!
Perfect! I can see the analogy!
Cool
dude this is literally the best thing ever
Thank you:) I don't really think so myself - mostly because in my head I kept talking myself into/out of doing rim clicks or playing the snare near the rim instead. Anyway, thanks again, and happy new year!
Great playing pal loved it!! Love the set up too that is quite a kit you have there!! You've earned a sub and a like from me!! I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on my latest drum cover!! Cheers and Happy 2025!!
Thanks! Very nice and tight doubles on the bass drum from what I watched of your latest vid (the Cypress/BB mash up). I avoid my double pedal unless I'm playing Primus or Rush songs (I stopped playing metal/thrash a long time ago). As I get old, I play that stuff less often, so I really hardly use it anymore and just rely on my primary foot. Do you live in a place where acoustic drums aren't possible? I'm thankful, and it was a priority, that when I found a mostly permanent place to live the ability to play drums was a major factor in my decision. There are no volume knobs on acoustic drums, lol.
I love the custom aspect of electric kits, essentially they are big samplers and operate much the same way. You could load anything onto these pads if you really wanted, but I love to get drum sounds and customise them for kits. I always played acoustic growing up but right now no, not too possible right now I have 2 kids so space is limted as it is!! Atleast if need be its no problem to quickly tidy this away particularly around summer times and such!
@ I understand. There have been a few periods in my life when it wasn't possible to drum on a set, so I just banged on my pillows and bed (or steering wheel) instead. Playing on any kind of set is better than not playing at all!
I can't say that it's intentional but I honestly like the scratchy audio cause it sounds more raw
Oh ya!
It's definitely a laid-back and great groove!
I don't think I've had such a thrill since the last time I rode on a roller coaster. Can't imagine what it's like to actually be playing it. I've got to go back and listen to the original now. Great stuff. 1:20 - 1:45
From above you look exactly like my dad. Even the glasses. Which is VERY strange for me because he's a very conservative executive that hates rock. Almost wonder if you are my dad and living a double life. He was a top college tennis player with the best strokes and quickest hands around, so I suppose it's remotely possible. dad?
Can you do one for "Bad Reputation" or maybe "Return of the Farmer's Son" by Thin Lizzy?
Damn. Never knew the drums were so cool on this song.
Secret hidden more cowbell at 3:41.
Underrated song. i go to bars a lot and this great cover song is never played on the jukebox. I'll play it tonight in D.M.'s honor. All the guys in this band were hot former session players if I recall. Nice funky drumming.
Song got even cooler after watching this video. Strange, the things drummers do in a song but you never notice. Or rather subconsciously notice, because you DO love the song, you just don't know the full reason why you love a song. For instance, watching this video, and others like it, you realize that symbols aren't just for crashing, but lend atmosphere and fill up the sound. Sometimes too much with certain drummers. It's possible to watch these videos and not notice that he's actually doing something with his left foot.
That stick drop and catch gets an automatic like alone. Well done, sir.
Thanks! I almost admire that kind of stuff more than my actual playing, lol. I noticed on the recording that I somehow managed to squeeze my stick under my ride cymbal and that's what caused me to lose it. Lucky break that it popped back out on top of the set. Another gem I deal with sometimes is having a sneezing fit in the middle of a song. That's a really fun situation to deal with!
sick bro
Thank you!
Those paiste signatures are amazing cymbals
The only signatures I play are my hi-hats and left splash. My left crash is an innovations, my ride a dimensions. The rest are a mix of Alphas (amazing cymbals for the money), 2002, 3000 (Xtra hi-hats), and 2000 (Mellow China).
Didn't realize what a noisy song this is. Well done.
Can you do Perfect Strangers. I like the drumming toward the end of it.
Didn't realize the drums were at such a quick pace for this song. It's like you're doing it wrong. But I guess you're not.
Good stuff. Which is the most difficult/complicated song you've done. Link? Thanks
I always get Mitch Mitchell and Chas Chandler mixed up.
I'm not a musician, but this looks super fun to play. Is this song considered particularly fun to play by drummers?
It is fun, but it's fast! It gave me some forearm burn even when I was in prime drumming shape, lol.
One of the most enjoyable I've seen. Well done. Busy drummer, he was. Can you do one of Stewart Copeland's more difficult songs from The Police?
Copeland has a style that is incredibly difficult to replicate. In addition, I know there was one Police song I was trying to play and couldn't figure out how he was playing it - only to later read that the hi-hats were overdubbed. I don't play many by them, and haven't in a very long time.
@@DM-tc3gz It's not like the earth is going to implode if you attempt a freaking Police song.
@@Frip36 Ok, how about you try one....
@@DM-tc3gz The only time I've tried to play drums was with two of my mom's wooden cooking spoons on the couch cushions. Disappointing to hear that Copeland dubbed in the hi-hats. Or is this a common and accepted practice? I guess I understand you not wanting to play The Police. Though there's only about 7 of us here to see it. I love their song "Voices Inside My Head". Love how they groove together so naturally.
😊 Nothing will ever beat the jam and lyrics of this song…
I'm terrible with lyrics. I can never understand them, lol. Fun one on drums though!
Magic.
Thank you! Great song, and fun one on drums!
Outstanding, in the pocket…
Thank you very much! That's honestly the best compliment a drummer can ever receive!
You sell yourself short big bro, have some grace within yourself…
I tried, lol. It really had been a while since I'd played the song. Heard it a million times though, so at least I had that going for me, which is nice. Gunga galunga.
The Doors are untouchable…
Wow!!! I saw this band live and had no idea how involved the drums were in this song 🤯
WOW! Perfection 👍🙌
Mad Skills Big Bro!!! 😮
I LOVE ITTT ,, You did perfect sir!! 😭❤️
Thank you! The Cardigans had so many fun songs to play! I don't play their songs nearly as often as I used to play them, but I always enjoy playing them when I do.
I don’t play an instrument myself but drums are my favorite; and The Cardigans are definitely great for all those jumpy beats. You are such an amazing drummer!
fun to play, well done!
Thanks! It's so hard for me not to race the song, even though I've heard it a thousand times. STP had so many cool songs on drums, IMO.
Tony Thompson would be proud of you.
I highly doubt it, but thank you :)
Excellent 🤙💯👊
Thank you, and thanks for listening/watching!
I saw dad bust a move at a wedding when this song played. Couldn’t get him to repeat it at mine…
epic sauce
Thanks! It's one of those songs that I play much better if I let myself go into an "out of body" sort of experience and I don't think too much.
The most underrated and probably most talented Beatle of them all!
I feel like this is one of the easiest and most difficult Dead songs to replicate. Thank you brother!!
Are you a mind reader because Bryce was wearing his Stones shirt to school today! This song will always be one of my top favorites of their’s. Rock On Brother!!! 🤘
Glad you liked it, and more than glad you're raising little Bryce correctly and that at 6 years old he's wearing a Stones shirt :)
Would you expect anything less?!?!
I believe the drums were a sample, but of a real player. Can't remember the song though. But it's def flea on bass and the guitar is a sample i believe
ua-cam.com/video/a2sQ5AReoVg/v-deo.htmlsi=ZbEE-w7XonPO8Aja 1:42-1:53 is the guitar sample
