Thank you for your comment Sue. Yes, I was ages at the Emily Foulds stand because I loved the Yorkshire Spinners natural coloured wool but it would have irritated my skin and due to the cost, it would have to be something that I could wear. Likewise the Wensleydale sheep wool on The Wensleydale Longwool stand. The colours were absolutely beautiful. The skeins I bought are really soft so I am knitting little shawls to see if the yarn is ok next to my skin. 😊
Regarding the stocking, I like the chunky wool on the heel as it's almost like Father Christmas' beard. The colours of the wools at the show are beautiful, particularly all the shades of neutral and pastel
Thankyou for commenting. Glad you like the stocking.😊
My mum's family were fishermen in Whitby and wore guernseys as a matter of tradition. I have never thought who knit them for them. Love that part of North Yorkshire.
Thank you for your comment.Yes, when you are younger, you don't think of things that you know would be now be of interest. It is a lovely area. We are spoilt with the sea and moor. 😊
Hi ,it breaks my heart to see such wonderful wool that I can't wear and it makes my hands sore to knit it,I use cotton, linen for myself, I love silk but I really find it a bit to expensive, there's another show at Harrogate that I think is on soon ,happy knitting xxx
Lovely to see your podcast! Love your purchases, wish I could have gone. Happy knitting 🧶
Thank you for your comment. Maybe you can get there next time. 😊
i only found you about 5 episodes back and am now going to go right back to the beginning. It's incredible that you have knitted that jumper on size 14 needles! Although I have knitted all my life, I have only ever done socks on a size 13, never finer. Your workmanship is amazing . An overused word nowadays but truly awesome in the proper sense.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. It was quite a task due to the fact that I had a deadline to meet. The wost part was due to the dark wool and lack of daylight due to it being winter that made it difficult to see if I had made any mistakes and more so because the time had to knit was the evening time. It was worth it though especially when I saw my brother-in-law's reaction. I hope you enjoy the journey and you might be inspired to knit a guernsey yourself. 😊
@@WhitbyGuernseyKnit Light to knit is such a problem for me also. This time of the year particularly so. Even though I do most of my knitting or crochet in the early morning( I am well past retirement age ), and have an overead light on, it is becoming more and more difficult to do elaborate stitches .In the evening it has to be socks or plain stocking stitch!. I look forward to more of your podcasts.
Well, it is good that you keep active with your knitting regardless of the light levels. 😊
Hello dear, say, why did you say that the Guernsey was not a success? It looks like a very nice top to me and if nothing else it was practice and a learning experience ;) Happy times, lovely knits! Su / Pinguinpullover
Thank you for your kind comment. Yes it certainly was a learning experience. 😊
I am catching up on your journey.xx🐝🐝
Thank you. I hope you enjoy the journey and it was a journeys as you will find out if you view each week. 😊
This was a great thing to see, Thankyou .xxx🐝🐝
I am pleased you enjoyed. Thank you for your kind comment. 😊
these patterns were made for people who did not have time to have a nervous breakdown. funniest piece of wisdom on the entire internet. thank you so much!
I know, Deb is so straight talking. Glad you enjoyed. 😊
I really enjoyed what the lovely Lady Deb was speaking about and totally understood her no nonsense way of knitting. I like the fact that Ganseys do not need any shaping either! I have that book too which I bought and have been very interested in knitting this as I am a knitter too. Also married to a Cornish lol here in Australia. Thank You for sharing. This lady has clearly inspired me more.
What a lovely comment. Thank you. Yes, Deb is very practical and no nonsense.and is very inspiring. Ooh lovely, you should knit a Cornish guernsey. 😊
So glad to have found your channel! Wow, such beautiful scenery as well as the knitting and interview - thank you so much for sharing ❤ Thank you to Deb also! Going to catch up on some of your previous episodes
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. I am pleased you enjoyed the vlog. I hope you enjoy some of the episodes. They show the knitting of a guernsey from the beginning to completion. There are a few little trips around my local area.😊
Thank you for showing your knits. You did quite a lot in six months. I enjoyed the tour. It looks like an interesting place to visit.
You are welcome. I am pleased you enjoyed the brief tour of Robin Hood's Bay. Yes, it is an interesting place with lots of history.😊
Lovely to see you back. Thank you for The Bay. Lived there when I was young! My favourite place in the world. Precious memories. 🧶
Thank you. I am so pleased that I filmed now. It is a shame the weather had changed but I guess you will have seen plenty of rainy days when you lived there. I recently retired from teaching at the school. I wonder if you attended there. I never tired from my morning view as I reached the top of the bank to go into Fylingthorpe. Not many people have the privilege of a view like that on their way to work. 😊
Lovely knits I really like king cole drifter it washes Lovely, happy knitting ,did you see the program with Helen Skelton showing our coast line it was brilliant, it was on last week called Yorkshire...... can't remember title love sue xx
Thanks Sue. Yes, I did see the programme. The drone shots were superb and showed the coastline at its best. Xx
I've just started watching your series memorializing your gansey journey. It's wonderful! I'm a beginner /intermediate knitter (at 69 yrs old, but in good health and feel much younger) and after a couple of simple sweaters, I've decided to knit a gansey. I've ordered three cones of Frangipani. May I ask how many hours you think you put in to this beautiful sweater. I heard you say 14 weeks, but how many hours per day? Just wondering. I'm not too concerned about how long it may take because the hours will go by anyway and I will enjoy the journey. But I also want to stay focused and have a somewhat realistic goal to the finish line so I don't wander and turn this into a 20 year project! Please keep recording your knitting projects, they are so helpful and wonderful! 😊
What a wonderful message. It is excellent that you are in good health so there is nothing to stop you. Once you know your pattern you will be surprised at how easy it is because there isn't any shaping to do. I hope you asked for a free pattern from Frangipani because that is what I used and it was so helpful. I added a pattern at the chest area and that could be as simple as a moss stitch or a similar variation. I wished I had done a few lines of pearl to distinguish the bottom from the pattern at the chest area. I actually do know how long the guernsey took because I recocorded how long I spent on it in a notebook. On average I spent about 2 hours each day (due to other commitments) but I recorded it accurately each day and in total it was 190 hours. I will do my best to record my knitting projects. Enjoy your journey. Let me know how you get on. 😊
Thank you! This type of tour and interview are what I love. You did a fabulous job with interview. I’m sure each knitter had their own personal connection to the craft. I now have a little connection to the craft, people and place that developed and used the gurnsey in their daily lives. I’d love to hear the stories of the crafters and fishermen whose lives were knitted into the fabric.💗💗
Yes, it would be interesting to hear about the crafters and fishermen but unfortunately, I don't know of any that are here to tell their stories. I wish I had asked my great aunts and uncles but when you are young you don't have the wisdom of asking and now too late. 😊
Love this! Thank you so much for sharing! Gonna have to get myself down there next year if the exhibition is on again. So inspired to give this a try ❤
Thank you for your kind comment. Yes, you need to go because you will definitely be inspired. There was a lady at the exhibition today when I went to collect my guernsey and she was buying the yarn and needles to knit a guernsey. She was looking at the ones on display and she chose a pattern that she liked and was going to copy that. You get drawn to certain patterns. Plus Deb is so helpful and knowledgeable. 😊
This is such a wonderful channel. I started a guernsey last year and stopped just before the gussets. It has been so wonderful watching you grappling with the trials and tribulations. you give me hope to get back to mine. Looking forward to next week when you show us your knits.
Thank you for your lovely comment. I am so pleased that you are considering getting back on with your journey.😊
Wonderful. Thank you ❤
You are welcome. What skill in a jumper.😊
What a great interview. The exhibition looked fab too. Would you consider coming up with your own pattern for your grandson?
Thank you. Yes, I probably will.😊
Fascinating. You’re lucky to live close to the exhibit. Imagine the total knitting hours that were in that room. I hadn’t thought about the patterns needing to be easy enough so they didn’t have to fuss with their knitting.
Yes, it was a wonderful exhibition. Actually once you get into the rhythm, they are easy to knit but are time consuming. I know, I hadn't thought about the knitting hours. The skill of those knitters. They were incredibly neat. 😊
What a wonderful video xxxx
Thanks Sue. The exhibition was wonderful to see.😊
Looking forward to seeing some of your other knitting projects 😁
I hope you will like them. 😊
So good to see you I'm going to try and get there xxx
Hi Sue, I hope I get to see you.😊
How lovely to see you back! May see you, as I’m going too!!! Happy knitting 🧶
Thank you. I may see you there then. I am looking forward to going.😊
How nice to see you back. It will be interesting to see the exhibition and also your knitting. Do they have Guernsey patterns for one year olds?
Thank you. Yes, I am looking forward to seeing the exhibition and showing my successes as well as the failures. I will find out about the patterns.I know Deb sells small size guernseys so she might have some to sell.😊
It’s really lovely to hear from you again! The exhibition will be very nice to see and it will be especially enjoyable to have your commentary along the way. And if you do manage to film any of the workshops, I think you’d be capturing and sharing wonderful skill that I’m sure would be enjoyed by many more people here who’d love nothing more than to see it in person, but are simply unable to. 💙
Thank you. Yes, Deb is really knowledgeable so I hope I manage to film enough to do justice to the history of the guernsey and the skills of the people involved.😊
Love the information. Wanted to knit one for ages. Will have a go now. Thank you
Thank you for your comment. I am so pleased that you are going to give it a go.😊
Hello just found you, I’m making a Gansey too. Not for the faint hearted 😅
No it isn't b7t you will feel very pleased with yourself when you complete your guernsey. Keep up the good work.😊
Phew!!! Huge congratulations! It’s stunning. 🎉
Thank you.
It’s looking stunning! 🧶
Thank you. Keep up the knitting.😊
Loved seeing your walk; how stunning it always is in the snow. Happy knitting! 🧶
Thank you Penny.
Love your videos! Like you, Ive been knitting since a child and have just taken the plunge (thanks to Deb, Propagansey, in Whitby) and have started my 1st Gansey. My paternal family have always either been Yorkshire fishermen/merchant seamen and, from as far back as I can remember, they’ve all worn their Ganseys. I have tried to incorporate patterns from all the places they’ve sailed from and I’ve used the same wonderful book as yourself. Nearly up to the gusset, so wish me luck!! My husband, who never wants anything knitting, has asked for one, so fingers crossed!😂. Absolutely love your Gansey - I can imagine how thrilled your brother in law was. I love the fact that they tell a story of our heritage and family lives so their memories live on. Huge thank you from another proud Yorkshire lady. 🧶
Thank you so much for your lovely message. Well done on taking on the challenge especially incorporating the various patterns. It would be wonderful to see it finished. I bet you enjoyed meeting Deb. Knitting the gansey will be a challenge and very different from anything you have knitted before but so satisfying when you have completed it. I hope to do an update video at some point. I haven't done another 5ply Gansey as yet but I am on with an aran one, which I know technically isn't one but the pattern says it is and it has knitted up so quickly. 😊 Enjoy your knitting.
Well what can I say. Words are not powerful enough to express my delight at receiving my traditional guernsey. Allana I know what a busy life you lead which your followers would never know. To follow your journey after I received my guernsey has been an eye opener “ to say the least. I will treasure it always and whether it ends up in the Whitby museum or on a museum when I die will be up to you. Thanks are not powerful enough.
You are welcome. I know how much you will appreciate it.
It was nice to hear that you got it done on time. It looked very well on him. Thank you for showing your guernsey journey and the views on your days out. I hope you'll be back to show us more of your crafting.
Thank you for your kind comment. I am pleased you have enjoyed the journey and the littlesnapshots around Whitby. I hope to do so in the future.
I had tears when I seen it finished ,you have been amazing I hope you continue with your channel ,I will miss you and your beautiful work sue xx
Thank you so much for your positivity Sue: you and Lynn really spurred me on knowing you would be watching and commenting.
Through your incredible research, determination, diligence, experience and skill, in my opinion, you have achieved something far more special than even your exquisite final product, which will certainly be a treasured heirloom for generations to come. Not only did you produce a fantastic gift, you used your existing knowledge and skill and challenged yourself to try and to learn something new. Your bravery to take on such a technical project honors and celebrates the resilient, resourceful, tough and boundlessly caring and loving fisherwomen of generations past. You were able to continue onward and preserver through countless setbacks, much in the same way your ancestors did as they watched over and protected the family and home while their husbands were out at sea. You’ve embodied their loving spirit by creating a beautiful masterpiece just like they did as they provided for their family while waiting for their husband’s safe return. Your living present day demonstration of historical craft is awe inspiring! This series has been a pleasure to watch and you should be proud of what you’ve achieved! I learned so much about many things I never would have realized I was interested in through your patient and expert explanation. Thank you so much for making this and I genuinely hope this won’t be the last time you post videos!
Thank you so much for writing such a kind and generous comment and for recognising the wonderful talent of the knitters from the past who created beautiful guernseys in much more challenging times. I am so pleased you enjoyed the videos and I hope at some point in the future to record another knitting journey.
I've so enjoyed watching you knit this beautiful guernsey, you were so patient and worked so hard. You must be very happy with the result, your brother-in-law is a great model! I'm going to miss your videos, I hope you come back sometime to show us what's on your needles. I've been watching from Ontario Canada.🧶
Hi Lynn, thank you so much for all your positive comments all the way fron Ontario. You really spurred me to continue on my journey. Yes, I am happy with the finished guernsey. I was worried that it might not fit but it fits well and my brother-in-law is very pleased.
Well done, it was such a lot of work and it looks fabulous. An heirloom piece even. who knows, it may one day end up in a museum of the future! Your brother in law wears it well and i am sure he very much appreciates all the time and effort that you put into knitting it.
Thank you so much for your generous comment. My brother-in-law really does appreciate the time and effort. He is now watching the vlogs so he will be aware of all my mishaps along the way.😂
It was lovely seeing the guernsey in the museum but I do prefer the navy blue. I've been knitting for many years but it would have taken me at least a year to finish one of these sweaters!
Thank you for your comment Lynn. I know , I have been knitting years and this was on another level. Those needles are incredibly sharp andcwere so awakward for me. The knitters from the past were obviously very talented women.
That must have been interesting to see the guernsey at the museum. Did it say what year it was from? Will you bring yours over to show them when you finish it?
Thank you for your comment. Yes, it was really interesting. No, unfortunately there wasn't any information on any of the items. Yes, the museum has asked me to take the guernsey to show them.
That's too bad that the museum didn't have more information. If they take a picture of the one you knit, they'll have a year to put with yours.
I know, it is a shame. I went back to the museum today and they have put some notes about the patterns used in the guernsey in the cabinet but no date. I was talking to one of the ladies who had been giving a talk on fashion and she was saying that they don't have information on some items because in the past when items were donated they didn't take notes on who owned it etc and also over time, information got lost. Now, everyone knows the importance of knowing dates and the history and information of the item.
Wow what an amazing sweat xx
Thank you so much Sue.
You have so much patience, it's so fiddly if I was you I couldn't bare to give it away ,well done xx
Well Sue, this has tried my patience beyond anythingi have done. I have wanted to give up so many times.
You are doing such an amazing job with this guernsey, thank you for sharing.
Thank you Lynn. I am slowly getting there and I mean slowly. 😂
I've been enjoying watching the guernsey grow. I haven't seen someone putting a stitch marker inside the work before. Is there a reason for this?
Thank you for your comment. Ha ha, no reason at all. I will have pushed the stich marker back so I could pull the yarn tight so as not to make a hole.
Oh I was wondering if I could learn a new trick. :)
😊No, I will have been annoyed with it getting in the way.😂
So enjoying your sweater journey! I love the colour and the pattern, it must be getting a bit heavy. Hope your knitting goes well this week, looking forward to seeing the progress next week!
Thank you so much for your kind comment. Yes, it is extremely heavy. It will be very warm.
Your footage of Whitby was so interesting, thnk you for taking the time to film and share it. You are coming along a treat with your knitting!
I am pleased that you enjoyed the filming. It is annoying that I made the error in editing. You can tell that I am a beginner. Thank you for your comment.
it's not a problem, , it didn't hinder my enjoyment of of your video @@WhitbyGuernseyKnit 🧶
Sorry everyone. I have made a huge error and deleted the first part of my video about Whitby. The video resumes after 50 seconds. Also the quality of the upload is not at the usual standard and I don't know why.
This looks like you've done the bulk of it. Do you think you'll be within your time schedules?
Thank you for your comment. There is still a lot of work involved in knitting both sleeves. I am not confident that I will make the deadline.
Thank you for taking us along on your journey! I'm really enjoying your videos.
You're welcome. Thank you for your kind comment. I am pleased you are enjoying the videos.
