Spare Time Repair
United Kingdom
Приєднався 27 тра 2023
Hi, I'm Graham. On this channel I will do repairs, restorations and modifications on electronics equipment or anything I feel like working on. There may also be occasional reviews or other related stuff that may be of interest.
Kenwood double cassette deck with ugly level meter
This Kenwood KX-W6020 double cassette deck was in working condition but suffered from an over-reliance on ugly red LEDs. I give both decks a good service, but my plan to make the display more visually appealing wasn't as straightforward as I'd hoped.

RCA portable CD player - service and minor repair

This RCA RP-7906B portable CD player appeared to be completely dead when I tested it, but only required a minor repair. It still wasn't operating at its best though, so I carried out a service while I was at it. Outro music: Calvary by TrackTribe
Orphan Sony turntable - power mod and repair
Переглядів 473День тому
I found this Sony PS-LX295 turntable at a Goodwill store and couldn't resist bringing it home. In a previous video I modified a similar turntable to accept an external DC power supply, but I decided to do something a little different with this one. It also had problems with the cueing lever and the auto-return mechanism not kicking in when the end of a record was reached. Outro music: Calvary b...
JVC CD changer with bug infestation

I bought a JVC XL-M401 CD changer at a antiques store as 'not working'. It had some mechanical issues, but I also had to deal with the legacy of several insects who had made it their home. Outro music: Calvary by TrackTribe
Canon PowerShot S5 camera with severe battery leakage
Переглядів 39428 днів тому
Cameras that run on AA batteries are less common these days, and it's easy to understand why. This Canon PowerShot S5 had been left in a drawer for many years with batteries inserted and was looking in poor shape. Can I get it working again? Outro music: Calvary by TrackTribe
Pop-Up Pirate toy... not popping up
Переглядів 669Місяць тому
I bought this Pop-Up Pirate toy for my wife for nostalgia reasons as we had both owned one as kids, but she recently told me that it had never worked - the pirate was happy to sit in his barrel even with all the daggers inserted. Time for a repair... if I could get inside. Outro music: Calvary by TrackTribe

Brother P touch 85 label maker with BAD keys
It was fancy backthen. I prefer analogue meters. Found one in an old classroom. It was white like some one poored some flour on it but I learned quickly it was asbestos dust from the room's cracked walls. I left it there. 😅
I bought this as my first dolby and hxpro deck back as a previous model year sale, so 1992. I was working for $4.50 an hour at Burger King, so even on sale this was a major purchase. Performed well for many years, and made many tapes off fm radio, which I still play. I don't remember when it crapped out, but the b side stopped having sound, then the left side developed a crackle for a while, then no sound. Into the recycle bin it went. I never thought anything ugly about the all red. I was just happy to have a tape deck with quality sound and less to no tape hiss. The previous unit was an all in one Yorx new wave. Thanks for the 20 minutes of nostalgia.
YOOO I HAVE BASICALLY THE SAME ONE!! It's a KX-W8020 and it's probably one of the best decks I've used, the model I have has all of the same features except high speed dubbing, otherwise it's all the same
Also, I have 8 of them, I got them from a pile of warranty returns from a local store that closed down years ago, the only issue with mine is transformer hum and very slightly incorrect azimuth. The 7 other units have bad drive belts as apparently that was an issue with these out of the factory
BTW this is a really good starting deck, it's mostly computer controlled and generally has few faults, just typical tape deck wear. The line outputs are also quite nice and work really well with my ratshit covered sony amp (that's a different story)
Also for some reason my 8020 has a much larger VFD than yours, kinda strange actually, the VFD on mine is very pretty and includes all function indicators, including the selected deck
Yeah the 8020 has an All white VFD which looks very nice, it has a red clear overlay near the end of the VU meter for recording level purposes as well
actually I also have that same Husky screwdriver as well, just as beat up, these coincidences are scaring me
Nice job. Looks like a fairly well engineered product.. seen alot worse.
it looks much better.
Îmi place foarte mult pentru modificarea făcut și curățirea dec casetofon original.
For a moment...i thought it was my exact Kenwood twin cassette deck...the LED display is identical to my KX-W4020...but the tape buttons are electronic and auto reverse in the middle...mine are under the decks as manual type are...but the motherboard and transports look just the same from 3 feet away...I'm sure there's extra components on his more advanced model...i prefer simplistic...less to go wrong...but the LED mod is clever...well done... tempting for me but not for a while...maybe when it needs more attention I'll do that too
Nice job! I think both mechs are almost completely Technics.
خیلی خیلی متشکرم مهندس همین را میخواستم عالی متشکرم❤❤❤❤
Just bought one of these off eBay. Excellent video, should come in handy when repairing mine.
Vampire, standby or phantom power draw? = it is waiting for a command input ~ in case of those digital caliper; to press on/off button/slide caliper open. I also have one and was aware of it; I have seen that with it “virtually” off, if the LCD is looked at, at a certain angle the digits are seen ‘ghosted’ on it and with the coin cell removed they disappear ~ I just take the battery out when storing it. I can relate to 2 things that have that problem; 1st a small candy grabber: it had a ‘physical’ switch and when turned on, would wait for a coin to be pushed into it’s slot ~ found when intermittently using it as a money box/piggy bank for loose change. if left switched on the batteries would drain and learnt to tip it back to the switch under it to physically turn it off. 2nd the ‘modern’ remote controlled gas fireplace in our ‘recently’ renovated lounge; waiting for the ignition command from the remote, when the fire shop engineers had installed the fireplace they left the battery pack in the fire and the 9v in the remote connected then the builders covered-up the fireplace to stop dust going into it and up the chimney & to protect the marble surround. I can’t remember how long it took them, but after the builders had finished refurbishing the lounge, we ceremoniously un-covered the fire to light it in celebration but it emitted 3 beeps and did nothing 🤨, we looked at the “troubleshooting” in the manual and it said: indicating low/weak battery’s = so by the time it was installed > the lounge being refurbished the fireplace had drained its battery’s to the point it wouldn’t light 🙄. As it is only used if the central heating fails and on Christmas Day & Boxing Day when the family come around, as a traditional decoration and heater, I had learned to disconnect the battery pack in the fire & the 9v battery in the remote after using it, and for about 6 “Christmas’s”? The fireplace has not needed to have its battery’s replaced 😉
Well, it does have HX Pro, and Dolby B-C. It's a fairly run of the mill 90s deck, but you can do worse. Worth saving.
u are right the small connector on led is anode, must be throwbacks that have been sold .. nice work
Thank you, that's reassuring!
Not the best of decks but still definitely worth saving. It's a Rolls Royce compared to the dross Teac sell for £400+ nowadays.
I have a better one coming soon in a future video.
MrSlipstreem...if you think TEAC is poor nowadays you shouldn't watch videos on cheap Chinese tape mechanisms/ transports they fit in no name garbage as shown on TechMoan channel...he's an expert on the latest cassette crap from China
My dad had a Kenwood X-82 cassette deck with his in 1989, that one also had a fault where it would stop as soon as you pressed play. I think it was just on one of the decks though, the LEDs were similar as well but it was just a single line of red ones instead of one each for L & R
🙏🙏🙏👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Nice work!
Thank you!
What a piece of junk, sold them back in the days. Great fun to repair stuff anyway, keeps the mind from other problems. Well done.
I was shocked to see the inside of that thing. I would have expected that from a Sorny, not a Sony...
Thank you. It certainly won't be my go-to turntable.
@@8BitNaptimeBy the time, the consumer was expected to go full out CD, the TTs were really a poor excuse. Somy could very well be the original manufacturer 😂.
Good job! That turntable turned out amazing
Thank you!
Thanks for this video! I had the same Rambo issue but with a different model. I tried knocking it around to see if it will joggle that component back in place, but that didn't work. Took apart the same part at 09:00 in your video and put it back together. Alas, that worked!
Excellent! I'm glad it helped.
Thanks mate. Just fixed mine following your great video. Total success. $500 unit fixed for 80c! Thanks very much for posting this instructional.
I'm pleased that it helped you!
Googone is nasty. Olive oil can work, takes longer but doesn't smell like it will make you blind. The labels on the glass containers easily peel off after small amounts of olive oil run down onto the label.
Imagine how easy it would be for the manufacturer to ad such a switch for almost no cost.
whats the goo gone like
It certainly gets rid of sticky residue.
Great job
Thank you!
I think you might have used a to tight of a belt! This can wear out the motor!
I had a similar turntable to this one LX-295 and I did the modification using a twelve volt adapter put in the back a jack for DC and got a 12 volt adapter and worked great!
Oh German roaches!
The three holes that are numbered are transit screws!
Oh, that makes sense.
To be fair, on camera the paint job doesn't look all that bad. Glad to see you're getting back to posting more videos which is great. Happy 2025 and looking forward to the next ones!
Thank you! Happy New Year to you too!
@SpareTimeRepair btw, in cold situations, put the can 30 minutes in some long container and fill it with hotish water (not boiling) and let it sit 30 minutes. will soften the paint for even coverage. then use some hair dryer on the metal for 3 minutes to warm up the metal. will make the paint flow nicer on the part. huge difference in quality vs painting in the cold. what happened to the lav mic you had? on camera audio is shrill.
@@as-ne8gr He moved from UK to US and his gear is still in transit.
That's good advice on the paint, thank you. And as @CoderSauce said, my gear is in transit but I'm aware that the audio is a problem. I'm getting a hum from the microphone I'm using and I tried to remove it in post, but it seems that it's making it too harsh. Bear with me, I'll keep working on it.
Great vid thanks. I have some diodes on the way to attempt this repair myself. Really nervous about ripping it apart tho 😂
You'll be fine... just avoid my mistake when removing the top cap!
Helllllyeeeaah Thank you. Now I can fix my girlfriend's steamer and impress her
i have the same problem on my jvc a11 i even gave it to profesionals to service and same after the servicing i think its the flywheel moving form side to side but i have 0 clue how to change thrust on it
Had one of these Loved it! it was my last bridge camera before moving to a DSLR, Mine deterioated over time where eventually you'd but fresh batteries into it and it stopped turning on or would power on for a few mins. They took pretty decent images at the time.
A little bit of BRASSO can polish those contacts very well.
puncturing batteries? not of one of the safest practice to attempt, ever! 🥸
Fair comment. I considered it low risk but should have advised against it.
Great stuff thank you so much
by now you are married. I kept checking in and seeing you havent posted and wondered what happened. so congrats on the marriage and your new home. I hope you get settled in quickly. I think brits will have a harder time settling to the us vs us'ers settling into the uk. glad youre back. mic is fixed in camera video after. camera mic doesnt always sound great but happy for you!! add patreon. like I told you before.
I'm settling in well, thank you - just waiting for all my belongings to arrive. Much too soon for Patreon - maybe when I'm more established.
Massive vitual hugs! My sons new game wasnt working and youve fixed it 🎉
That's great to hear, thank you!
Welcome back, glad at least some of your tools arrived. Looking forward to the next one!
Thank you! Nothing has arrived, but I re-purchased a few things to get me going. The videos should be more regular now.
Hi, excelente video, buen wherr i can get the diode? Im from Colombia
I found them on aliexpress. Had to buy 10 for $8 (aud)
I've had this exact same problem with my son's birthday present pop up pirate game. Thanks for creating and posting, it's fixed ours too!
Excellent! Happy popping!
What a waste of your time ...... what about mine

My homepod 2 play and skip music randomly, turn on itself in middle night and maximize colume automatically, this is horrable cause no Service center accept to rapire in Indonesia, no buying apple home pod for the next, bye bye apple
Excellent video. Very articulated which help to fic my steamer. Thank you

This product makes a lot of noise and it is not working, no smoke coming out of the steamer no steam at all , any other troubleshooting?
