I work for a medical insurance survey company that does telephone surveys. Some of the agents get at least 10 or 12 surveys completed in a day. I only get around 5 or 6 and it's like pulling teeth. I am wondering how the people who get almost two dozen surveys completed do it because I have clear speech and a friendly manner and I usually get flushed down the phone line or hung up on as a scammer. I have been doing this job for over a year. They have two sessions of 3 months each so it's at best 6 months employment. I used to do customer service which was a breeze compared to phone surveys. I even suggested that our company see if they could get CVS or Walgreens to give a 5% or 10% off coupon to those who completed a survey with us as a thank you for doing the survey and it would also bring more business into Walgreens and/or CVS but no one is listening to me.Fortunately we are paid hourly wages but it's nothing to crow about. If we were paid per completed survey most of us would starve. You are very talented and a good speaker. Could you address this telephone survey conundrum and give me a little heads up on how to be more successful. Thanks.

Susan, I totally agree choosing the topic for your thought leadership research is a critical decision. Too many underthink this or get frozen by overthinking it. What research will best serve your target niche?

As the saying goes, a jack-of-all-trades is a master of none. I've been feeling a bit lost lately, to be honest. My consulting business/agency has reached a point of inflection and I've struggled for some time now evaluating options and deciding on what's next. My biggest challenge right now is balancing the need for stability and predictability with my desire for growth. I've been wrestling with the decision of whether to expand into a new service area, pivot to a different niche, or simply optimize my current offerings.

Your video's reminder resonated deeply with me Susan, thank you. Niche = standing out. Focusing on a niche clarifies and amplifies your expertise. And the clearer your expertise and niche, the easier it is to attract your ideal clients.

Sorry to hear you're struggling. I've definitely been in that place. But you're correct -- having a strong niche -- and MARKETING it -- makes you a specialist. Which can help a lot. And remember -- just because you're focusing on and promoting a niche doesn't mean you can't continue to do work outside the niche to pay the bills -- you just don't put that work on your home page. It took us 3 years from committing to a niche to get to the point where all the work we do is in that niche. But if you don't start, you'll never get there. Sending good vibes your way!

I actually passed out a health and wellness survey at my daycare in order to collect data on what people enjoy to eat so that my company can recreate their favorite foods using Plant based ingredients. However I don't currently have a huge audience and I don't have a website yet...but I do have social medium platforms how do I get people to take it?

I'm sorry I didn't see your content earlier. I hope you've gotten an answer, but if not -- the best ways to get someone to answer a survey are: 1) Have the invitation delivered by someone they know (a person, an organization, etc.); 2) Make their response anonymous; 3) Tell them how long the survey will take to complete, and BE HONEST; 4) Tell them why completing it will help them, or help someone else; 4) Thank them for their time by offering a relevant incentive - either as a direct reward per respondent, a sweepstakes drawing for a more significant prize, or a $1 donation to their choice of two charities that will be relevant to them. I hope that helps! And thanks for your question!
