Rutland Water 6th April 2024
A bit of a windy day today. It was quite a good day with a varied number of species, but my probable highlight was bumping into Tim Appleton.

The highlight of today was watching Maya, the Rutland Osprey. I watched the nest from the other side of the bay and the feed from the live nest cam. As luck would have it, Maya laid her first egg of the season as I monitored the nest cam. It was a strange day. It started with a flock of Reed Buntings hanging around the feeders by the Visitor Centre. Not on this video, but I was impressed by the camouflage of a female mallard sleeping right before me. I could not see her without the aid of my heat scope. I even managed to get a picture of someone tidying the Osprey nest, preparing for the usual breeding pair return. Update: She a...

Took me a while to get this video online, hampered with my stabiliser software playing up. Somehow I had a load of grease on my extender, which ruined the red kite shot. The highlight of the day was looking through my thermal camera and seeing loads of snipes dotted about. It has been a while since I have had a rain free weekend. Although I did not think it was cold, all the lagoons were frozen, certainly a lack of birds up close. But it did help me to capture an out-in-the-open snipe. I would have missed it had it not been for me thermal imaging camera. I had a shorter day today, mainly because I was up late. The one excitement today was a Marsh Harrier, sadly not on video, and none of my photos were perfect. But, as I went through the photos, I noticed a red tag on its wing. Turns out it was born and tagged in Norfolk sometime after 2018. Sadly, I did not have a clear shot of the tag, but I sent the details to the ringing project anyway. Inde...

Finally, I found a non-rainy Saturday, the forecast was for later in the day. It was a good day for missing birds. A jay appeared while eating my ham roll, but I couldn't get to my camera in time. The next day, while going through my photos, I found some dunlin and a ringed plover that I had not seen on the day. I finally captured a rabbit, though. It hung around, giving me a chance to get my c...

Rain has been keeping me away for a while, but I managed to catch a day just before Storm Babet hits us. It was a quiet day, mainly sleeping ducks. The video highlight is probably the black-tailed godwit; not that unusual but lovely to see it back after its summer vacation. My highlight was a flock of linnets. It was too quick to identify at the time, but I got a few blurry shots with my camera...

I changed my destination and returned to the South Coast for a few days. The first hide, and the most productive, was the Arc pits. I do not know why I never came here when I lived this way, and Dungeness was my regular spot. The glossy Ibis was the stand-out moment, but a little stint lurked among the dunlins. Sadly, I don't seem to have caught him on any videos. Contents 0:00 Introduction 0:0...

The weather and other busy weekends have kept me away lately. Today was a good visit. A pair of ospreys were perched in front of the hide for the whole two hours I was there. Great video!
Extremely cute! :)
Great video!
impressive footage and so may different bird species! great share!
wow! what a lovely surprise! a buzzard, in my language 'een blonde buizerd'. (I think it's buzzard).
It is an Osprey. They were persecuted to extinction in the UK during the 19th century. There have been a few re-introduction projects, including Rutland Water, which started around the year 2000. It has been a success, today they thrive in the area. www.lrwt.org.uk/rutlandospreys/about-rutland-ospreys
This is the full video diary for that day. It was a great day, a pair of them were hanging around in front of the hide for the whole morning. ua-cam.com/video/7xYb7hnwJ8M/v-deo.html

There’s a lot of them. ❤
What a charming sight they make, swimming in the lake

nice and amazing birds

Very satisfying watching this video. Beautiful sea birds and nature.
Wow, the bathing osprey! What a rare moment.
I think in Florida they are a pest and they are hunted (I think its the Egyptian goose)
I just did a quick search and I think you are right. In the UK, they can be ‘removed’ if causing a nuisance, and the rest of Europe is committed to eradicate them because they are a non-native invasive species.
Poor geese, they have a right to live 😢
they even have that ancient egyptian style of eyes
Very cute! Baby geese are adorable!

They are all great sightings, thank you.
Vow, you seem to know everything about Rutland Water, don´t you. I like the Canada geese too.
I have been coming to Rutland Water for about 25 years. Although I lived 220km away, I usually managed a monthly visit. Last year, I was lucky enough to be able to move within walking distance. Rutland Water is a great reserve. A wide variety of well-managed habitats. Every month there is a new set of birds to enjoy.

hi there! great footage (again) making Rutland Water more and more interesting. maybe some day I'll cross the North Sea to visit the area. and bring my camera of course! many thanks for this upload! cheers
Rutland Water is a great place. Apart from the reservoir, it has woodland, farmland, and a wonderful variety of wildlife, summer and winter. I always see over 40 species, and I just sit in a hide waiting for the birds to come to me!
A lovely scene of the little grebe.!!
Thank you. I do like my Little Grebes 😃
A good number of observations for one day!!
Awesome video!
Beautiful s always

Thank you
What a lovely video thanks for sharing 😊
How cute? Much cuter than any cat! :P Geese rule!
the teal are worth our while too! very nice video!
Rat.
bitterns are often heard, and seldom seen. the Egyptian geese make up for the bittern, and so do the other birds you've captured. Rutland Water seems a highly attractive spot for birders. thanks for sharing this lovely upload!
Rutland Water is a man-made reservoir built in the 1970s. One of the conditions of building it was to create a nature reserve which is now a Ramsar internationally important wetland site. I am lucky I was able to recently move within walking distance of it. The Egyptian geese was a lovely moment, swimming right by my hide, and they came up onto the bank next to the hide, so I was able to keep watching them after I finished recording.
