How we keep Christmas simple for our large family | intentional gifts, Christ- centered traditions
Переглядів 2,5 тис.День тому
Christmas is such a beautiful and simple time, but the Christmas season can easily be turned into a very complicated and stressful time. Our eyes can drift onto the consumeristic mindset that is really loud this time of year. It shouldn't be this way. We need to turn our eyes back to what matters and WHO we are really celebrating- Jesus. How many gifts does a minimalist family do? How do we kee...

When you feel far from God
Переглядів 620Місяць тому
Is God there? Does He forgive me? Does He still love me? Can I return to Him? All these questions can come into our minds and we can feel so far from Jesus. Drowning out the lies the enemy screams at us can be hard. But, when we really return to the words of Jesus and the truth that is God, we can see more clearly. God never leaves us. It is us that leave Him. In our culture, we slowly start le...

There are lots of things "societal things" I have stopped doing. The very interesting thing that I have realized lately is that conviction is not a bad thing. I feel the same way when I declutter. I barely have anything to declutter, but I still do it when I can and will maybe fill a grocery bag of things to donate. I like that. Do you not wear slips under your dresses? I have a nude slip that I wear under dresses that are a little bit easy to see through like your yellow dress. No one can see through anything when I wear it with those dresses. I feel like that's maybe not a millennial thing to wear slips (I'm xennial)?

I have a few dresses that have slips attached which I love. But, I would rather not have to put on an extra layer if possible(except for in the winter when I add leggings under the dresses) :)

I’ve been wondering how mom’s declutter with their kids around. I’ve been debating doing it when they’re not around so I can get rid of what they don’t play with, but also know I might feel guilty doing it that way. Would Love to see a video about how you do that with your kids that you mentioned maybe doing.

You could try removing the toys they don't play with and stashing them somewhere if you have the room. Wait and see if they notice and ask about them. If they don't after a couple of weeks you can let them go. It hard letting go of toys. Lots of memories.

I struggle with having a small home (900sq ft) and a husband that will not embrace minimalism. He cannot let go of things, put things where they belong or stop bringing in new things on a daily basis. Honestly sometimes it makes me want to leave and find somewhere else to live. I tried hiring a decluttering expert to help and he says that the mess is mine and they can't touch his stuff. I just don't know how to cope with it all. I want to live a less materialistic life and teach my son the same. So far at 7 he's dong well but I'm afraid he will be inundated.

These are the approximate measurements. :) 1 can of chickpeas 1/4th cup of tahini or more depending on how much you like Splash of unsweetened oat milk(or any non dairy milk) 1.5tsp of minced garlic Juice of large lemon Salt to taste ~Cook chickpeas with the canned water in a pot for 15 minutes. ~When chickpeas are cooking, mix together tahini, garlic, splash milk, salt, and lemon juice to make a creamy mixture, After chick peas are done cooking, drain any excess water. Then add chickpeas to tahini mixture and blend together. I use a small ninja blender and it works great. Refrigerate in container. You can also change up seasonings, add different flavors of olives, tomatoes, artichokes, etc, :) This is just an easy base.

Wonderful, Katie! As someone from Europe, we always have had more simple Christmas growing up, and now those memories are so so special to me. I can see your children treasuring these simple calm memories so much as they grow. I am sure living in America pressure to consume is much bigger and is so nice to see mothers like yourself to inspire others to think about true meaning of Christmas. We as Orthodox Christians start our journey on 15th of November with Nativity fast and it is so special to consume less and think of Christ more. As our priest says:„ What is the joy to welcome this feast and rejoice, by eating and enjoying everything, if we have not restricted ourselves beforehand, by preparing our souls and bodies for it”! I hope your family and everyone has special and peaceful season!

My family doesn't do gifts or decor other than our Advent candles. We don't even have a tree (but also have no place for one since we are a family of 5 in a 734 sq. ft. 2 bedroom apt.) People think that is just sad because they could never do it. We give money to our teens. They use it for when they need things like a car. Our oldest bought his own car because of all he saved for years. We also are taking them out to do something special, which we have done from time to time for Christmas. Last year we got them a couple of presents, but they were clothes that they needed since they outgrew some. Since last week we had to buy new shoes for my middle child (his feet grow every few months these days). We also bought him a pair of jeans because I noticed his pair he was wearing were too short. Now that his needs are met, we'll just give him the money. Our oldest has a job and buys his own clothing. The straw in the manger is SO CUTE. What a lovely tradition that is!!! We raised our children (and will raise our toddler) to know about Jesus, telling them the history of St. Nicholas and the truth about Santa. Both my husband and I were raised in the same way. Loved your video and I adore how you celebrate!!

I also wanted to mention that your tradition of one gift from mama and daddy and then a child picking out a gift for another child is truly so special. And then a mutual gift. We will be implementing this next year into our Christmas! It is so selfless and others-first driven, I don’t know why I didn’t think of that before! It’s perfect. Thank you. Always look forward to your videos when you upload. ☺️

Thank you so much for sharing this, Katie. This message really struck me as someone who has been stuck in deep depressive episodes because of their work. I was very much doubting that God brought me to teach at a Catholic school; I have experienced hardships by seeing the tears of my students, hearing how one student might come to harm me and my loved ones, and even hearing how these children think of me as weak or disrespectful because of the way I discipline and act. I have cried multiple times this year to the point of being numb. However, this message that God sent to us through you has reminded me not to rely on my flesh. My flesh wants to make everyone happy, including myself. My flesh wants me to have it easy. My flesh wants to go down the easy road, no matter how it could remove me from God. I have been praying to God about my situation with my job. I have been asking Him to provide me with the path towards Him that didn't bring as much pain. However, God's plan is never easy for us, but He promises it to be worthwhile (not only to us but to Him and others around us). While I have had some very dark days this school year, I see God's light in certain students and it reminds me of why I am here and why I do what I do. Today, I had a student who just came back from the hospital and she was dealing with blockage within her intestines; She also had a broken arm that made it difficult to deal with urgent bathroom trips. I could see the tears in her eyes from her stomach pains and embarrassment due to accidents and know that God wanted me to comfort and help her the best I could. This included calmly speaking and being able to help change her into clean clothes. I knew she wouldn't be able to get this level of care from anyone else without complain. Thank you God for the easy times and times that are tough. He uses these moments to shape us into who we are meant to be as His child. "Pressure makes diamonds," is a quote I remember hearing growing up; I can see how God uses our circumstances to shape use into something beautiful. We might not feel beautiful in these hard times, but He leads us through hard times with His strength. When we are weak, He is strong (2 Corinthians 12:9-11). Again, thank you for this beautiful message, Katie. I pray that you and your family are doing well. Hope y'all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.💖🙏

Thank you so much for sharing your story! It is beautiful how God is using you to help children. I know you are bringing Him glory by doing what He has called you to do even when it is not the easiest. It is not always easy to listen to the spirit in us and deny the flesh. God bless you and keep listening to His precious voice. 🤍

Yeah, I also don't like those sayings because really. . .as a servant of Christ and mom, I am not someone who comes first at all, so it is weird to think that I have to be happy in order for the rest of the family to be so, as it doesn't work that way at all for me. I am NOT good at thinking before I react (I don't say bad things, but I definitely need to just be quieter - haha). However, it amazes me how my children will tell me about some of their friends' lives and how they are thankful for having me as a mother, and it really touches my heart. One thing, you said video games. My oldest is nearly 18 and wants to play a certain violent game and goes on and on and on about how it isn't that violent and how it won't cause him to be violent and how it would be a nice game to play with his friends. He doesn't want to listen to me no matter my kind voice or my reasoning to him. :: sigh :: I just tell him he can play what he wants to when he is on his own at the end but that he should trust my judgment because I care and love his soul and what he allows himself to see. Again, another lovely video and talk.

    • @lightandmind77
