Let’s go! Hope I can make it and hope I can remember all this stuff and get my rifle built in time haha.
I hope so too!
Is that a Grey Birch Chassis? How do you like it? 16" forearm? Is the forearm rigid?
Correct, it's the Grey Birch La Chassis with 16" fore end. This is the 2nd/latest generation which attaches the fore end by use of two screws rather than clamping on to a pic rail. The tolerance between the chassis and fore end is very snug which is a good thing. While it will not be as rigid as a solid aluminum chassis (i.e. PDC Custom, MDT, etc.) it is still rigid enough. There is some flex if you really put weight on it, but I haven't found it to be an issue and it has been just as accurate as other stocks/chassis that I have used. I've been happy with it. This is the same rifle that I took to nationals. The biggest advantage it gives me is the fact that the buttstock is very light which helps with getting the balance of the rifle forward of the mag well. Since I run the TriggerCam that puts a pound of weight off of the back of the scope which makes balancing difficult even with my heavy barrel. I have found this to be an easier chassis to balance than others. The folding stock also makes cleaning much easier. I plan on doing a review in the near future. I am also hoping to get a new MDT Premier Gen2 for the CZ 457 for testing as well. But with the Grey Birch being half the price, it's hard to beat for the money.
So a place an hr from me has nrl22 once a month, this month it would be this exact cof? I've never been.
Yes, the NRL organization puts out the monthly COF and all matches run the same 5 stages. There are some differences, as if you read the COF, you will see that there are 2 options for each stage. It will be up to your local clubs Match director to pick option 1 or option 2 for each stage. They will tell you which option they are using so that you can prepare accordingly. Some clubs also run a bonus stage or 2 that is designed by the local club, but that does not count towards NRL league points, in addition to the official monthly COF.
@greghollis9006 ok thanks im trying to learn as much as I can before I go👍
@@bfox87 I would recommend going to a match first before you go to compete. It is still fun just to watch in person and you will learn a lot. Although if the closest 1 is an hour away then that might not be ideal. Just don't get discouraged after your first match. I know I didn't do great on my first outing, but then almost doubled my score from the first match on my second go round.
@greghollis9006 thanks, yeah I figured I'd probably have to just give it a go for the practice i used to race mx ive been last before lol but i eventually got a w. But I plan to somewhat replicate the cof at our local range for practice when I get my chassis back. Figured If I do that I'll atleast not be so bad it is embarrassing lol
Looks like my awesome viewers have already answered your question for me haha! Welcome to the channel and the sport! Each month I post strategy videos leading up to the first Sunday of that month going over each stage. As mentioned in other comments, yes, it is a published COF for the whole country/world for that month. You can find it at the NRL22 website (you may have to sign up to get access to the PDF). I have a video that shows what to expect at a match here: ua-cam.com/video/4K9E-o8TOm8/v-deo.html Most matches will be similar. I would recommend reading the safety rules multiple times and familiarize yourself with the procedures/commands before you go. I also encourage you to reach out to the match director after you sign up and let him/her know that you are a new competitor. In my experience, they will try to squad you with more seasoned shooters who should be more than willing to help. Don't be afraid to ask to borrow any gear that you don't have yet. It will help if you have good data on your ballistics, a bipod, and a support bag, but bags can be borrowed from other competitors. The main objectives are to stay safe and have fun. There is a learning curve, but you will quickly learn what skills you need to improve upon. Let me know how it goes and reach out with any questions you have.
Cool video man , great scopecam work , hey man email me
Why don't you use a resolution chart like the USAF 1951 you. Also a brightness test with the scope looking a a white sheet and using a light meter, the accuracy of the E/W adjustments and reticle notwithstanding These are the most important aspects of scope quality
The ISO chart that I intend to use will accomplish the same as the USAF 1951 chart. An official USAF chart is only 2 inches by 2 inches which is quite small and they are expensive if I want to get a real one. It is easy enough to replicate so I could add it to the other charts/targets that I plan on using. The brightness test is a good idea as many scopes dim as magnification increases. Thanks for the feedback.
Nice vid man! Where was this located? I think Phoenix Rod and Gun club? I’m planning to try my first match there next month.
Correct, Phoenix Rod and Gun Club. We'd love to see you at the range! I will be taking over as Match Director later this year so let me know if you have any questions.
Registration is open and I'm in squad 1 if you want to squad together
Right on man! I’ve been gone at work for 6 weeks. Hopefully home Thursday and I have to put my rifle together Friday hopefully and zero it and test some ammo Saturday I’m hoping. Hoping I can make it! Was holding off on registration til tomorrow to make sure everything works out with me getting home.
What optic did you installed on the MTR?
Currently using the Bushnell Match Pro (original version, not the new ED version), but I am in the process of testing some other "budget" scopes that will still meet the base class requirements. Stay tuned for reviews of those.
If I choose to hold over, what is an average parallax setting, or is that still dialed each time?
All scopes are different, but in general I'll parallax for the middle target and keep my magnification low to increase depth of field. Something in the 12x-16x range should allow for good depth of field while still being able to use the reticle hashmarks to make holds.
Hey man , shoot me an email . You can find it on my about section
Good plan and nice setup. Does it allow enough alignment adjustment in the x,y,z to allow measurement of eye box size? That would be useful info.
There is probably a way to measure that. Good suggestion. I will look into it.
Awesome! Not in the market for a new scope right now, but I'll watch! 👍
Different approach than most other suggestions as my focus would be on specific scope classes. Like is there something thats comparable to the og MATCH PRO for base class but includes .2 mil hash marks instead of the normal .5 and such like that.
Well, you're in luck because the first two scopes I will be reviewing are the OG Match Pro and a scope that I might replace it with that has 0.2 MIL hash marks. Stay tuned!
tracking. Some way to compare clarity, light gathering, paralax... I think tracking and paralax effects would be tops on my list
I definitely will be testing both of those
Brilliant. And your effort is appreciated.
Thanks!
You need a geared head on your tripod. That way you can dial windage and elevation to get the scope perfect and level. It also needs to be stable enough that you can turn the turrets and the scope or base does NOT move at all. That awesome camera should REALLY help to give a great image.
Absolutely. I will be using a geared head, the ballhead was just for demonstration.
Rig looks like something a cartoon villain would use to shrink people or something.
Honey I Shrunk My Group Size!
One thing that is important to me, that I don’t think I’ve ever seen a reviewer mention, is the ability to distinguish between the target and a noisy background whenever the parallax is not dialed perfectly. In other words, if I’m dialed for a 40 yard target and transition to a 95 yard target, could I still take the shot without having to adjust parallax. Not sure exactly how to measure that, but it is a big issue for competitive shooting and I’ve never seen any reviewer address it.
Definitely something I want to test. Depth of Field is going to be very magnification dependent, but I'm sure the different optical configurations used by different scopes will lend to better or worse performance.
Main thing I would be interested in seeing is the reticle at 12x vs 18x. Some reticles look great on the manufacturers website but are too fine at 12x to make out the sub tensions. Other's are too chunky at higher magnification for shooting a 1/4" KYL at 75 yards. Glass quality and box tests are a given, but I don't see many people showing what the reticle looks like at the magnifications we use for competitions.
Great points. Most tests will be focused on the more real-world competition magnification ranges.
What bag stop / barricade stop are you using?
Grey Ops Bag Stop in the "shorty" configuration. Shorty is great for the CZ, but you may want the standard length for ACIS pattern mags like in the Vudoo or RimX
Parallax at 25 and under. Fov at min magnification. Fov at max and maybe a few in between. Mirage at min/max. Depth of field at min and max and midway between. Dof thinking about how sensitive parallax is between a 75 and 150 target for example. I.e how parallax free could you stay on a troop line with a 100yd spread
Great ideas! Mirage will be a challenge as it is more weather dependent, but depth of field/parallax is something that is definitely missing from most reviews.
You have really upped the anti on scope reviews if this works! I have really enjoyed your other videos! Looking forward to watching the future reviews!
Awesome, thank you! I'm trying to get a more objective evaluation of scope performance and I think I have some good ideas to test them.
Brilliant idea!
Glad you think so!
I like the thought you have put into this, the "target" down range is an optical target. Maybe the color "mirage" around the reticle and at the edge of the scope, Maybe how well it tracks at 100 yds? Not just elevation but also windage.
Great point. I was definitely thinking of putting a color checker/color calibration chart out at distance.
Looking forward to it.
It will take some time to get set up, but scope videos should be out next month! Stay tuned!
Hi, I recently subscribed to your channel and love your work. Thank you for asking - I would love to see scope reviews that actually show that you can see the bu!!et hole on a paper target. (Not with a go pro or a sporting scope ) I purchased some scopes before prior to doing YT research and took advice from the shop. As an example a 3-9x40 is good enough for 100y with a 22lr. However, on a white piece of paper I actually can not see the small hole in the paper. I then had to get spotting scope just to see where I was in relation to the bullseye. Eventually I would like to upgrade all of mine. I actually just did 1 of them and went with a zerotech 4.5-18x40 and I can finally see the holes on the paper target. Not great but good enough on a 100. So in short every scope review shows that you can plink a metal target with this sort of scope and that sort of rifle but no one ever then shows if you (can’t hear the impact (on metal) can you see the hole to see where on the target you ended up. I understand past 200 yards this may be an issue unless you have $2000 scope maybe but I guess reviews like you are about to do would confirm this in your findings. Peace and well done again for an awesome channel. From the land down under 👍
Great points. Seeing impacts on paper through the scope also makes zeroing much easier. I'll add that to the list!
Hey man cool setup . Man if you can give me a shout .
I'll definitely give you a shout out. No one does the turret torture test like you do!
I like this idea for practice. Might have to give it a try.
Great shooting. Thank you for the video, helps me a lot since I’m a NRL, PRS rookie. Not always sure when to dial, and when to hold over. Great looking rifle, what chassis are you running?
Thanks! For new competitors I always recommend dialing for each target, but learning holdovers will be important for getting higher scores. I just released a holdover practice target so be sure to check out that video. I'm running the Grey Birch chassis for the CZ 457
Thanks so much for the custom targets and explaining how it works. This will be a great training tool! BTW I get so much information from watching your videos. Thanks again.
You're very welcome!
When I’m in a low kneeling position like you at 9:30, I get a lot of heartbeat bounce. How do you overcome that?
Hard to say. The first thing I might try is to change the position of where the buttstock meets your shoulder pocket. With the buttstock higher you're going to have less contact with your chest which might help with the heartbeat bounce. You may have to change or adjust your cheek weld and/or length of pull so that you can still see through the scope.
Amazon Canada... for all us northerners... $73CAD... so about $55 USD.... great tool, but not worth the $ / value compared to other tools Thanks for the info... for $15 USD = for sure.
Agreed
This really is brilliant!!
Glad to hear it!
Wwhere is this at? Ben Avery? I did hear the RO mention Ben Avery, so I'm guessing this isn't Ben Avery
This match was at Phoenix Rod and Gun Club, but there are also matches at Ben Avery and Rio Salado Sportsman's Club.
@@CopperStarPrecision I wish I started competition when I was still in AZ
Are you in ouray Colorado? Saw your logo on a front license plate
Nope. My logo is the state flag of Arizona so sounds like a fellow statesman is visiting.
Oh I’m an idiot. I was so excited. I was like babe he’s here. He’s from Arizona too 😂
Haha no worries, nice to know I have a fan club!
That's a great idea for training or challenges.
Thanks!
Being new to the game, I'm always looking for better ways to improve. This is freaking awesome exercise. Thanks for putting it out there.
Happy to help!
If you measure this and find that the difference does make a difference in accuracy do you then batch the ammo accordingly? Then if so would you make the changes with bolt shims verses barrel shims for a quicker fix? I have heard this for years and I have even when loading for high power competition we would weigh each bullet, case, etc. to all match our desired needs. We did see a difference in our 600 yard shots…not so much on 300 in.
Weight sorting is difficult with rimfire since you don't know if the source of the discrepancy is due to the case, projectile, powder, or priming compound so I don't bother. For competition I try to stick to the match grade ammo (Lapua Center-X, Midas+, SK Rifle Match, Eley Match, Eley Tenex) which has shown to have very consistent rim thickness across a box/brick/case. I do not yet sort by rim thickness, but might start doing so for my benchrest rifle, not my PRS/NRL22 rifles. Where I do see some potential (I am still testing and will release videos when I have conclusive findings) is to match the headspace to the rim thickness of the particular brand of ammo that you intend to use for competitions. Bolt shims decrease headspace and Barrel shims increase headspace. With my headspace of 43-43.5 thousandths it is well suited to the Lapua/SK brands. I see some marginal benefit to adding shims to get the headspace closer to 39-40 thousandths when using Eley ammo (still testing this out).
Nice job
Thanks!
Would ammo velocity change holds?
Short answer, no. Long answer, since all the shots are at 50 yards then no matter what velocity your ammo is at they should all be arriving at the target at around the same time. If you have a good 50 yard zero and decently consistent ammo the target will work as intended. For example, the 0.5 MIL hold, if you dial 0.5 MIL up from your zero and shoot the target, you would expect your impact to be 0.9 inches high from your aim point (50 yards = 1800 inches / 1000 = 1.8 inches x 0.5 MRAD = 0.9 inches). The center of the first (lowest) bullseye is set at 0.9 inches above the aim point. So keeping your 50 yard zero and holding over the 0.5 MIL should have the same effect and your impact should be somewhere in that first bullseye. What different velocity will impact is your ballistic solutions/DOPE for targets at different distances. So for a 100 yard target your hold or dial might be 1.8 MILS where mine might be 1.7 if we are using ammo with different velocities.
Good challenge im currently using moa tho until i can get a mill scope
I just uploaded a MOA version on Patreon. Go check it out!
@CopperStarPrecision got it thanks ill have to try this with my new setup 😀
Love this idea. Ready for my next practice session.
Thanks! Don't forget to report back how you did!
Brilliant idea! I know what I'll be doing at my next trip to the range.
Glad you like it! Don't forget to report back how you do!
@@CopperStarPrecision Went to the range today, got all setup to do this, and realized I forgot the details of how it was supposed to be done. Really good practice, but I didn't shoot it exactly right so I'll have to redo it later. I didn't hold quite enough wind, but all my shots were hitting high for some reason.
Hmm... it could be printed at the wrong scale. The document is designed to be printed actual size and the black bars should be exactly 1 inch wide. Otherwise, a strong right to left wind would push your bullet upwards (assuming a right-hand twist barrel).
@@CopperStarPrecision That's the issue. The black bars printed at 0.90".
@@KoryReeves try printing "actual size" or whatever setting ignores the printer margins.

You're welcome!
It's not hard to measure and figure it out the correct distance, but putting "50 Yards" on the PDF would be an improvement. Cool idea. I'm definitely going to try it!
That's a great idea, I'll have to add it in the next version.
