AFA Ramp Slams Montage (1986-1988)
I acquired these clips while archiving for the OSBMXR Team Haro tribute video last year.
But really, the slam section in "Alder Tricks You Can Stand" is the inspiration for this here clip I cut together today.
Thanks to the Alders, I can't hear that Motorhead song without thinking of these slams... since 1988.
The final shot from "Alder Tricks You Can Stand" is Ron W"s infamous 1988 Wichita slam that put him in a coma, and (somewhat coincidentally) signaled the end of the American Freestyle Association contest era.
Bonus clips from the '88 DC 2-Hip KOV and Eric Steele in England with the wild alleyoop 540 attempt.
Thank you Alder Bros, Snakebite, Eben Krakau and all the riders in this video.
See if you can name 'em all.

Mirra, Bestwick, K-Rob & Kagy: 2005 X Games BMX Vert BTS 4K (ish)
Переглядів 1 тис.День тому
Someone recently commented on the previous video- "Why aren't there more vert comps?" This contest might show some insight as to why. The experience and skill it takes to be at the caliber of riding witnessed here in 2005 is incredible. It is not quickly attained. The level of precision, paired with the brutal consequences of being just a little bit off- it's all on display. Add on to the fact ...

I'd previously posted these 2 comps separately, and (incorrectly dated 2003), So here's a better, higher quality upload. The Ontario LG Comp is first, featuring the infamous Eduardo Torres slam. Brian Blyther stole the show here in front of his hometown. The next week (I believe, it was on the same miniDV tape:), was the CFB stop at Real Ride in Perris, California. Stoked to see Carlo Griggs ri...

I'm no longer certain that we are are simply "working" on 928 stuff, but somewhere along the line, switched over to art." Beautiful. Bonus "Hot for Teacher" intro melody finish. 48 hours in Florida, April 1992. Starting at the Zellwood UGP dirt jump tournament, then straight to Brumlow's vert ramp in Melbourne, followed by Daytona Beach for Stone Edge and the local wallride spot. Fun fact: The Stone Edge session is where I first met Brian Foster ("pancake"), Robbie Morales (purple shirt), and apparently Keith Mulligan(Greg Hill Tuck). Also featuring: Rob Nolli (eating ...

I remember this was a special in the game no one knew how to do the specials but here and there you would see red writing across the screen and your character doing the specials move
Dave Mirra & the red Haro Blammo = Absolute class!!! :)
Just amazing seeing Jay ripping, you can just see the power, skill, and confidence.
Right! And he just landed in my backyard, so to speak. Pivotal life moment (no pun intended, but...) in retrospect.
thank you for posting this old footage. love to see it. hope to see more
Ah man, the infamous last one of Wilkerson! :( So glad I got to see him ride this summer - still shredding.
Some of the stuff Mat Hoffman did on those old-school bikes is incredible. Ace of spades ♠️

damn... I didnt remember sooo many crashes.. I rode there and thought I was doing pretty well as one of my FIRST pro contests.. how did I miss Dave Osatos tiretap to decade in... that was BONKERS.!
Pssst, that's Miron ;) Just watched this through again, and wow that's a lotta action for sure. Thanks dude
Loved watching Eduardo Terreros ride, he could blast higher than the ramp and land smoothly then fall on a feeble grind from the coping! Always unpredictable, always entertaining and a nice guy to be around.
I was there. Wish the pixel density was a little clearer, can’t find me. But I remember the show well. My favorite team and still got my 86 Master.
Modern BMX is missing Koji’s style 🙌🏼 it’s also always amazing to see Mirra and KRob footage.
CHEERLEADERS
Does anyone know the back story of what happened with Jay Miron at this contest ? It looked like he was gonna do a 540 whip but a cameraman or someone got in the way ? If you watch his full run he was visibly pissed and some guy walks over to him to give him a hand shake and Jay just just shoves him with his helmet 😂
This rings a bell, but can't quite recall. Would def put a bet it was related to a camera ops lack of spacial awareness on deck (AND completely oblivious to the mental game of risk the riders were dealing with).
@MavroCam That makes sense, when I watch these videos of older contests the deck would get so crowded with people who have no business being there ( friend groups, girlfriends etc.)
Awesome upload!! Dave and KRob ❤ killin it!! Lets not forget Jamie and Kagy!! Jessssssus Christmas!!! The air they were also getting and insane trick links… everyone was so good on vert that year the judges had the hardest job for sure!
Wait a min... BMX had cheerleaders? yeah, bmx has gone downhill hard... Bring back VERT! and also SOBE!!! lol

Thanks for adding some context in the description. What a nightmare contest format.
These team pain vert Ramps were the Sh!t. I’m glad I was able to watch these events when young, this year best trick was epic too. Bestwick double downside whip flair was one of the sickest things ever! X Games today is a joke compared to what it once was, those days action sports athletes were like Hollywood stars. Such a sick time in all aspects big time
Pretty cool you were there, seeing vert in person is mandatory. I'll be posting Best Trick soon. Thanks!
Bestwick ruled. The air he got was just spectacular.
@@stevenelliott155 Another level, so impressive.
@@MavroCam vert was sick! Those lineups were the best ones ever. Mirra, Kagy, Kevin, Bestwick, Mirron a little before, Simon Tabron, such epic times. Its Crazy to think Mirra and Kevin are long gone as well!
remember seeing him nosetap the concrete bowl in southsea uk literally vertical thin ledge 200mm 12ft transition scary
Mike was goofy footed?
And still is!
This man is so very missed. This is some classic and wonderful footage of a great man gone way to soon... we'll see you later Dave💙
One of a kind, "I tell you what" 🤘
That tail tag hang up on the coping to flat bottom looked painful!!!!! Some great coverage per usual🤘🏼🔥🔥🔥
Look at this. They were all competitors. But became one when it comes the new trick
The most savagely sacrificial slams alongside the most majestic of sketchy pulls. I’m in love.
Right! Thanks dude:)

Carlo sneaking in an oppo loockback. Nice!
There it is, hoping some of you would notice 😉Carlo is a sight to behold
@MavroCam Bizarrely, it's the first time I've seen him do an air opposite, let alone a lookback. And as a UK rider of that era I've seen him ride a lot. 💪
@@DAW1968 As I recall, he seemed to be having fun with it, especially with those late rocket airs. Too cool. And it was stupid windy that day as well.
Sheesh, I was at that Zellwood jam. First time seeing some well knowns of bmx. The kid riding in the green shirt was wearing aviators, and people were calling him Tom Cruise or Top Gun. Even remember some dude selling shirts called Homegrown. Fun day.👊
@@LoneWolfed wait, are YOU Top Gun?
I love this era of BMX!
Bob Kohl & Blyther!!! Stoke is high!
BMX vert pro's are gladiators that deserve their place in history. Great videos and thanks for releasing all this footage! Keep on riding and grinding Mavro!!
Thank you sir, will do
Dominguez and Itson cheering Blyther on - LOVE it!
YES, such a surreal moment, Mike D approved lol.
Loved that!! Never realised Blyther was still riding in 2001… and it’s always great to new (old) footage of Carlo!! 😁🔥🔥🔥
Blyther looking even better than I remembered, (of course)
3:10
5:00, welp i guess jeff gordon was that hated in the 90s
Ha, but how great would it be to find that shirt lol
Thanks mavro❤
It’s crazy where life will take people. When I saw the podium I couldn’t help but getting a little choked up. I mean one of them in that picture isn’t here with us anymore, another one of them doesn’t know his riding career will be over in 11 years from a freak accident and the third is the coach for the USA bmx Olympic team… wild to think about. Thank god we still have Scotty involved in bmx heavily. Miss Dave!
Smoothest pipe rider ever.
this mannnnn
These guys were like rock stars in the 80s. Amazing times! Nice edit!
I wonder what the comprimise was between authentic and performance
Nice sound! Certainly not an aesthetically attractive engine, with all the umbilical cabling and hoses - but I guess it perfectly represents Porsche's production intent. Not as bad as old Jags with the electrical spread all over the inner fenders and cowl and core support
That idle reminds me of a 1968 beetle running a bit slow/cold start.
What an interesting bark. As a child of the 90’s the 928 was too far before my time. I’ve always been confused as to what its purpose was or where it stood in the Porsche lineup. I’ve never seen a pristine example on the road! Very cool engine and very cool video. Your channel fascinates me as you have a time capsule of all the things I missed being a child.
Porsche was dieing and thought they needed something modern and away from tradition to make them float again. It's purpose was to replace the 911 but it ended up being the money maker that they needed to save the company from going under and saved the 911 in the process. Very important car in their lineup indeed. They added Volkswagens 924 to keep a line up of cars going which became the loved 944. Produced for 18 years with slight changes along with enlarging engine displacement multiple times they were able to rejuvenate the 911 before the 928 was put to rest while learning it wasn't the 911s fault they were dieing it was their own fault. If you want to know a little of what the car felt like in its prime watch the movie Risky Business. It sums it up perfectly. Good movie too
@@plap. great insightful comment ! Thank you for teaching me something today
@@LarryStranger No prob., Don't forget to watch the movie. It's really good and Tom Cruises second movie before he got weird and unbearable. It was 1982 and the 928 had been around for about 5 years. Had small updates and in its prime. When I picture the car in my head I picture that one. Love It or hate it, it was that kind of car, it was a great car. I always loved it. It was still a Porsche after all.
@@plap. am I mistaken for thinking Tony Montana purchased one in Scarface ?
@@LarryStranger Yes, very good. I forgot about that. That would have been '83 still at it height. Was showing status in that but wasn't so much a character in the movie as it was in Risky Business tho.
Miss these days
Dude was world class, seemed like such a happy guy too. What a shame, cool to see these private sessions though
