We visited our bucket list brewery St Bernardus - ABT 12 on tap - Brewer on Tour Belgium Craft beer
We visited one of our bucket list breweries & let me tell you, if this isn't your sign to book a trip to St Bernardus Brewery and stay in their guest house, I don't know what is.
Brewer on tour in Belgium has commenced after a white knuckle drive on the opposite side of the car and opposite side of the road (to Australia) commenced after leaving our brewery tour adventure in Amsterdam.
Open road, winter temperatures, rolling farm hills and then in the middle of what seems like nowhere pops up one incredible brewery!
To say we are inspired is an understatement.
Watch as Sam discovers and tries for the first time on tap, St Bernardus' famous ABT 12, triple blonde, the nitro ABT 12 and much more.
Take the tour, exit via the gift shop and hit the elevator to view the hop bines from the rooftop tap house brewery and restaurant. You won't be disappointed.
Let us know if this inspires you to visit and guess which beer Sam is planning to brew himself!
We are already discussing when to return!
What is your bucket list brewery? Leave it in the comments. We are looking to explore more.
Up next, Brussels brewery tour, Clarkson's farm, Verdant Brewing Co
Do you have a micro brewery and love sharing your love for craft brewing, have you just started home brewing and are dreaming of starting a micro brewery? Let us know in the comments.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing. That's a pretty brave way to dry hop, and I hope you never get a dry hop vulcano! 🌋 Afaik hop creep is more about hop enzymes breaking down and making unfermentable sugars fermentable rather than sugars in the hops themselves. Even after dumping the cone there's still more than enough yeast in the beer to induce hop creep, but it won't ferment at cold crash temps. The question is how you avoid and whether you're getting hop creep in your packaged product if it's warming up to room temperatures. Cheers 🍻
XPA all day!! 🍻
Great video, lots of feeling, and for sure you took one for the team, i grew up in Germany on a military base, and slung beer from a young age of 17 at the Rod and Gun Club snack bar on Base among many other jobs in the 17 years i spent until they closed the Base. My last gig at the Radio Station (As Technician) was pouring Beer on the final broadcast.
Outstanding...... as expected!!!
On a weekend away in mudgee and went to the local brewery. They had St Bernardus Tripel in the fridge. I was very excited to see it, had to get a bottle!
Jaysus that's unreal. Ordering my nitro reg and spout now. Legand.
This is the world's strongest beer. ua-cam.com/video/ij6nfLHBG3I/v-deo.htmlsi=1ZHlApEhPYN5H3ug
Epic. Thanks for sharing
Proper decent video guys fantastic. I’d love to go and see the brewery I love the beers. Thanks for the effort it’s appreciated cheers 👍🍻
Cheers mate, thank you for watching. It's a must see brewery, for sure!
2 down to earth people. Keep them vids coming guys
Thank you, that's very kind!
Lucky man :) I've been thinking about going down there myself, what time of year were you there, since it's so cold?
We were there in November, pretty cold especially at night. You should definitely visit!
I’ve been there last year after we had went to the Westvleteren abbey which is very close to St Bernardus, the brewery shop was the only part that was open that day, it was pretty amazing to be there. It was a shame that the Bar Bernard and the Brewery were closed that day, but I’ve got a reason to go back there. Great video, greetings from the Netherlands
The perfect excuse to go back. We filmed a short video at Saint Sixtus too, its part of our Belgium brewery tour ep coming up next!
Thanks for sharing, Brewery looks wonderful. Could only imagine being at a location with soo much Brewing history.
It’s certainly one of the most beautiful breweries we have visited.
Not a brewer but staying at the St Bernardus brewery in June. Also on the bucket list of places to visit, long time fan of the brewery... looks fantastic. How many beers did you drink in the end? I'll try and beat it 😀🍺
Don't need to be a brewer on enjoy it! June would be a great time of the year. He lost count but between 10-12 beers (that he can remember) Warning: the hangover was real!
@@flamingalahbrewingco yeah not going to beat that! 🤣
thanks!!
Thank you! If there’s ever an opportunity to return, do you offer private tours of the brewery and chats with the brewer/owner? Would love to do a longer trip and meet the team. Cheers!
@@flamingalahbrewingco we'd love you to come back but we don't organise tours or meet & greet with the brewer or the owner, sorry ;-)
ah well it was worth a shot! thanks again
Cool video and disappointing to hear even in Husky brewing high octane beers creates issues. I reckon you should do a batch to try and replicate. Can't wait for the Verdant video, as that'd definitely be on my bucket list
It is definitely an issue when serving high ABV beers, Verdant is coming soon!
Wow, awesome place!
It truly is, we recommend checking it out if you get the chance!
You should brew a high Abv beer. Just make it pricy and exclusive. I’ll buy it. Love your passion guys.
We have brewed beers this high ABV before. A stout that was 8.4 but we had to serve it in middies to elevate intoxication which sometimes leads to worse behaviour at the brewery. It can be done but monitoring closely is key!
As BIG T would say nice work son, did you take the drone shot at the end?
Yes, all footage was on our drone!
St Bernardus Abt 12 is what got me into craft style beer. Being able to brew an Abt 12 properly is the goal when I’m finally ready to let it age for so long.
waiting is an issue hahah
What an awesome place. I'd be absolutely fly blown if I went there 😂
It truly is! We could image in summer, the flies would be outrageous considering the fresh smell of cow shit in the neighbouring villages. Keeps it authentic haha
So what are the other 4 bucket list breweries to visit?
Well, we went to Verdant which is coming soon. A few others are in the USA and we are super keen to go. Allagash, Treehouse.. there's probably more than 5, to be honest! Do you have a bucket list?
@@flamingalahbrewingco We have done a brewers tour of New England and took in Foam Brewers in Burlington, The Alchemist, Hill Farmstead, Allagash, Bissell Brothers, Treehouse, Trillium & Harpoon in Boston. Plus a few other small ones in Portland and along the way. I cannot recommend a New England tour highly enough. So much inspiration for beers came home with us.
thanks for the recommendations, there are few we recognise but we will keep these for when we hit up the USA. Cheers!
I agree, Belgian triple blonde is where it’s at!
Absolutely, we can't wait to brew it!
U need some of that yeast. Should of asked them for a pitch
Woohoo!
Thanks for watching! Is it on your bucket list now?
@@flamingalahbrewingco I’ve never had any St B ales. Are the imported bottles worth trying?
yeh they do sell them on some Aussie craft beer websites, I got some from Claire at Christmas.
This is the best video that actually explains carbonation and tells you exactly what to do. Only omission was the link from Mass (5.4 grams) to Volume (2.8 litres). In that, to 5.4 grams (liquid form) expands to 2.8 Litres in Gaseous form. Thank you for sharing this video, absolute legend.
Do I understand correctly that before carbonisation you keep a higher pressure in the tank than the one with which you will later achieve VV co2 .
I can't believe you handle undiluted PAA without gloves/goggles...
Welkom in Nederland 🍻
thank you
Thanks for taking us along on your adventures
Cheers! We are glad you enjoyed it!
“Big building where shit goes wrong all day”…. Sounds like a butcher shop and a brewery have something in common 😂
Yeh that comment probably relates to many businesses haha cheers for watching!
Great video. Jopen is my favorite brewery in the Netherlands. Looks like you were at the Jopenkerk
So good!
You’ve done it. You’ve won at life. Congratulations to you both.
Haha, cheers. thanks for watching
The first beer. Was it a NUPA? Finally I get to see someone enjoying my kind of beers. I love Neipa, Nepa , Ipa ,Hazy Ipa, those beers you just can't see right through the glass because it looks like orange juice. Man, That drives me hella thirsty 😅🍻 awesome video! And congrats to both of you! 🫂🩵
Yeh it was. 6% got us good the next day! Thank you
The stuff you say is boring and shouldn't be in the video is the stuff I watch for. Love the details. Keep getting technical man. Great videos.
It's the boring stuff that makes all the difference, thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing! Were there any weed beers in Amsterdam?
Not that I saw, but it's one of the best places to find it!
Awesome trip, great to tag along
Thanks for coming along with us!
I've only watched to 3:34 of this video I live in Adelaide and luv Mismatch brewery's Belgian Triple pretty please do that one!!!!!!
there is talk of a triple... watch this space!
The Brewer and *Claire on tour! 🤣 such an awesome catch phrase for adventures *I can't repeat what Sam said. Just in case Jake the Muss finds out and bashes me
Jake the muss loves the catch phrase too so don't worry you can't offend this whooah ;) got to have thick skin married to Sam and have 2 brothers haha Thanks for watching!
Love your videos, so interesting and amazing insight into running a brewery, which would be my dream job. All Grain Home brewer level only here, but can learn so much from your content. Based in South Wales (UK), and already planning trips to London and now Amsterdam following your guided tours of where to drink great beer ! Good on you, hope you continue your success as you chase your dreams. Cheers 🍺👍
Thanks Danno. Keep chasing your dreams too and enjoy the beers for us. We are there with you in spirit. We want to relive the tour ourselves one day without a camera! Thanks for watching!
Great work team. again and again you keep us entertained
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it!
What about at 21 mins ol Johny singing in the background
Classic moment. We wonder if they played the Aussie music just for us haha
You guys are awesome! Cheers!
You are awesome for watching, thank you
Love the tour series, pitty the majority of beer drinkers have no sense of taste, just happy to guzzle down fizzy alcoholic dishwater. Give me great craft beer brewed with care like Flamin Galah, cheers guys keep up the great work.
Thanks for the support, glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the great content! Your videos on commercial brewing are very informative and entertaining. After watching them, I decided to start my own brewery in CZ. For now, it's a pilot brewery- laboratory with four 150L unitanks for recipe development and experimentation, but in the future, I plan to fulfill my childhood dream and open a full-scale brewery.
Good on you mate! Following your dreams. Thanks for watching and we wish you all the best in your brewing adventure. Where is CZ? Czechia? What style of beers are you experimenting with?
@flamingalahbrewingco So far, I've only assembled the equipment and haven’t set up the automation yet. That’s why I started with beer styles that are relatively forgiving in terms of temperature control. Naturally, I focused on the ones I personally enjoy: Berliner Weisse, Gose, Hefeweizen, and, of course, lagers. Lagers definitely require more work, especially when you know what real Czech lagers should taste like. By the way, if you ever come to the Czech Republic, I’d be happy to take you on a tour of different breweries! :)
Fantastic video, and really enjoyed the tour series. As a owner of a new brewery, your final statements really hit home. Been watching you for years, back when you were just homebrewing, and the channel has been a big source of inspiration! Keep going guys. Cheers!
Thank you for watching and following us for so long mate! Where in the world are you and most importantly how is it going? Cheers for your kind words. Claire & Sam
@@flamingalahbrewingco it's been a pleasure. We're based in Portsmouth on the south coast of England. Our brewery was commissioned in September, we've currently brewed half a dozen batches, and all have been well received so far. As a part-time brewery we've got big plans for the this year, and hopefully if it's a good one we can expand it into a full-time venture!
John Farnham in the background 21:00 lol
Love it! haha
At Brouwerij Troost he was telling you the beer is brewed with Phantasm powder made from Sauvignon blanc grapes. The sausage is Ossenworst. Raw beef with spices and lightly smoked.
Oh good to know, thank you. Troost was top notch service, beers and food! Thanks for watching
The biggest spirit distillation tower I've seen is the one at Bundaberg. Did you go for a push bike ride?🍺
Ok that's interested, thanks for the recommendation. We didn't get on bikes. We stayed in central old town and most of what we needed was walking distance or short uber. Besides that learning the road rules seemed a bit of a safety hazard, so we didn't risk it. Driving a car was hard enough when we left Amsterdam for Brussels. That's coming up in our next ep. Thanks for watching.
I've said to friends many times that brewing is more about having to solve unexpected problems. Seems it doesn't change when moving to commercial brewing based on your last comment. Great video again, thanks for sharing
We call running a brewery like a game of 'whack a mole'. Not sure if you're familiar with it but once you solve one problem another quickly pops up! The joys of running any business really. Thanks for watching.
An alternative to using a Diaphragm Valve if you do not have one, is using a small diameter hose, as a "straightener", to keep the beer from blasting through the Trub/Debris in the cone. In my 14 gallon Unitanks, I use 3/8", (or 1/2" inside diameter if You know there will be a lot of trub/matter) about 1 meter long. This acts just like the beer sampling coil - It slows the pour/dump and straightens it out, thus preventing a punch-through of precious beer. Obviously, this would not work on a massive Bbl conical. Nice videos Mate!
It does work on massive conicals. I use a 1.5" hose on 120 and 240 bbl fermenters
