The Issue with the Video Game Collecting Hobby: A Video Essay
There are those who buy games to play, and there are those who buy them to collect dust on the shelf for eternity. There's also a lot of overlap between those two hobbies and it's driven a wedge between much of the community.

Video Game Value Quiz: Round 2 | Collective Perspective [ep. 53]
I’ve finally gotten around to watching this video and I’m SO GLAD I did. You’ve absolutely nailed this debate, and as I was listening, I was nodding along and agreeing with everything you said. I am primarily a music collector and EXACTLY the same arguments persist in that space. They need to see this video as well! Truly awesome job my man!! 🙏
This is some stellar feedback, thank you very much for taking the time to comment! Do you collect vinyl or CD or what?
@ mainly vinyl test pressings, although I also like collecting early demo tapes as well. I’m always on the look out for original album art as well, but you know how tough that is to find!
It's mind blowing how many people can't understand the difference between a gamer and a collector I love playing AND collecting all kinds of racing games, and NFS is my favorite franchise (I know, what a posser 😅) The NFS game I hate the most is The Run, which is somehow well regarded amongst Spanish speaking fans and I ALWAYS get into conflicts when they ask why would I have a game that I hate!? Because otherwise my collection wouldn't be complete, duh 🙃 Is it really that hard? The same goes to Phantom Hourglass from my Zelda collection 🙄🙄🙄
Great examples! Thank you for watching
12:22 yup. cheap asf example, but my latest one being when i played last of us part 1 on pc and grabbed a cib ps3 copy because i liked it so much. i ain't ever playing that thing lol
i was going to say i don't collect games, but that'd be wrong. i buy just about any og xbox or 360 game, doesn't mean i'll play em. example! i have the first 2 halo games on xbox, but i ain't ever touching those. i'll play em with the master chief collection on my pc.
nah ur dead on. if i have no intent on playing a game, i generally don't buy it.
this video was great! I appreciate the info. are you going to do more of these? for different systems? this would be awesome to get insight on other consoles
@@collin542 thank you very much as mentioned, this was part 2 so make sure you see the first one. This is the type of content I release on this channel, so be sure to check out other videos. Appreciate you taking the time to comment!
@@birddoggaming sounds good! your collecting video games vs playing video essay was the first video i seen so i had to dive in the channel some more lol keep up the good work!
Great point! I have a great example of this in my own collecting/gaming hobby. I had Indigo Prophecy on PS2 as well as the remaster on PS4. I knew that I didn't need both copies so I knew I should get rid of one. I ended up getting rid of the PS4 copy because I just wanted to have the game and not necessarily play it. If I wanted to play it then I would have kept the PS4 version, but that isn't what was important to me with that game.
Personally, I would call myself a video game enthusiast... I am old enough to have my original systems since my dad bought the Sega 8bit for me and him in '89... I own several items that I've purchased simply for the rarity, and I love to see them displayed, but I also play a great many of my games I've procured throughout the years, but my collection is actively being enjoyed in both playing and simply enjoying the look of it in my personal gaming museum, lol... I will try to buy the hardest to find/most sought after versions of any game that I want to purchase, but I'm also realistic enough to know when I can and can't afford the "white whale" collection variant....
Thanks for explain to those guys the diferent ,gamer and collector,I collect Gamecube games and some of them I don't even play because I want in my collection
I sold my copies of Obscure 1 & 2 to help pay rent. I’m not a collector I just happen to have two rare games from my childhood. It was sad seeing them go but I was just thinking of the memories playing with my friend. Not the memory of playing a mid tier buggy survival horror game. If I want to play obscure. Steam sells both for like 8 bucks.
It's not this deep, bro
🤣🤣🤣
Like i collect hasbro wrestlers i aint setting up a royal rumble but might be fun if i did
I feel ya bro
Video games are sweet 😊
No doubt
I spied Xenoblade X on the Wii U. I salute you sir 🫡
I'm not a collector at all. The reason I can confidently say that, is because I know I lack a certain feeling, a feeling of wanting to have the thing. I used to feel this way towards certain things in the past. I could look at my stack of PS2 games and be thinking "yup, it's growing", with a certain satisfaction. Or, I could buy a mug shaped like Boba Fett's helmet, put it on my windowsill as decoration and get this feeling, "yup, there it is". Now, this feeling is very different from how playing a game feels. There is no thing to be had, it's an ever changing process. I may feel awe, joy, frustration, compassion, boredom...but playing a game is an experience, and experiences just aren't compatible with the concept of ownership in that way. This means that the joy of collecting something is purely subjective. It cannot be argued for, like you could argue that a game has good gameplay, is innovative or has good graphics. Sure, you might not like the same games that I do, but you would have to accept that the developers did a good job and that it is a fine product. However, if you show me your game collection, all I see are relatively nondescript objects. The only way you can explain your fascination for these to me, is to express how you feel. This might be why people sometimes look down on game collectors, the value of collecting depends on a feeling they don't understand, and it simply seems stupid to pay money for gray pieces of plastic. So I'd say that whether or not you define yourself as a collector must depend on this feeling. Let's say you have four PS5 games in your shelf, that's all. You buy a fifth one, play the shit out of it, put it on the shelf, and then the feeling comes, "yup, there it is. Five games, it's growing", and you smile to yourself. Then you're in the middle of the diagram. Personally, the feeling of having the thing left me a long time ago, and having the game in my shelf would summon no feelings at all. I just want the experience of playing the game, so I'm on one end. The other end is for those who scour ebay more than they play games, even though I'm sure they tell themselves and others that they'll get around to beating Contra one of these days. All in all, if it gives you a feeling of satisfaction and joy, it's a worthwhile hobby, no matter what it is. But walking through the streets of Whiterun, slaying dragons and saving the world is more interesting than a plastic cd-cover, that's just the way it is. xD
You are ignorant. No it aint the same. You can damn well hate the fake contrived graded game market. The whole market was manipulated. They graded the game and put it on auction and the same people bought it for ungodly amount of money. It wasn't a collector wanting the game. It was an inside guy trying to manipulate the market
Holy moly I just went and wasted M I N U T E S of my time to figure out what part of the video you were even referring to with all of this rudeness. You seem to be talking about Wata and graded video games in the context of 13:21 and yet I never said anything about Wata or graded games here Isn’t that crazy?? God bless you friend and check out 16:49 since you clearly didn’t make it that far
There is a difference between collecting and preserving ownership. I feel everyone starts as an enjoyer as when people become independent they become collectors because they begin to prioritize fair value to cost.
I'm a collector that has shelves displaying games, but I was selective on which games to display based on if I thought I would actually enjoy playing them in the future. Basically, high rated games that fit my taste of genres.
This is so dope!!! Have a list of what you’re missing?

@@tylerdoe1096 Great times. Great to see you in the comments man I appreciate you dropping by and providing some feedback!
Some/many? of us are both.
Correct my friend - see 12:32
@birddoggaming I watched the whole video. I enjoyed your provocative style.
I only ever collect games i will play unless i get games in a bundle as some of them i probably wont touch it, i don't enjoy the idea of padding out my game collection as someone else can pick up that game who wants to play it and enjoy it while it would just sit on my shelf if im the one who had it same thing with sealed games i want to collect as well as play all my games so it's pointless for me to have sealed (my only exception is my favorite game of all time) but im not gonna knack on someone who does
The whole “I only collect games I will play… except for the ones I don’t” is a major part of what this video is addressing
@birddoggaming well the only time I collect games I dont plan on playing is when it's involved in a bundle I'm buying from someone that does have games I want to play, if you want games just to have them then go do you it's up to you at the end of my day, just me personally for my collection I want to have the games on my shelves as a display as well as play them as I want to use them what they are intended for specifically old consoles as I could emulate and it's makes it easier but I would very much rather play on official hardware than something more convenient

I've seen book people saying "Buying books and reading books are two different hobbies". And yeah, that applies to any hobby. Collecting Pokémon cards and playing Pokémon cards are two different hobbies. Collecting Vinyls and listening to vinyls are two different hobbies. Collecting stamps and posting mail... Wait. That's all true. Now, I don't think there's a right way to collect. If the item you want in your collection is the definitive remastered version and you don't care about having the original. Cool! If you want the original version, cool. If it's a game I love I'd probably own both, because I love the game and I want all versions. But that's me. Imagine telling someone "no, you are not a collector because you don't care about getting the original version of this game you like". I think that's a bit silly. What if my collection is just getting the remasters of all games from my childhood? That's curation, therefore that's a collection. That's the beauty of a collection, it can be anything you want, because you are curating the things you care about. I agree that, in the end of the day it's about intention. If your intention is curating and keeping the items, then you are a collector of said items. But, in the case of your friend, they may not call themselves a collector, but if they are buying all Pokémon games and intends to keep them, regardless if they play it or not, they are collecting. They might not be "A COLLECTOR", someone whose primary hobby is to go around looking for items, curating and keeping them. But they are in fact collecting. They are intentionally buying specific games, doing some level of curation and keeping them. You can have a collection and not BE a collector. If any curation went into your items, you intend on keeping them and they have some theme/correlation, bam, you have a collection. The difference between that and the garbage bags is thay 1. You are not looking for different types of garbage bags and not seeking them for any purpose other than throwing your trash in them and 2. You are not intending on keeping them or curating them in any way. Ultimately I think this debate is kinda silly. It's a debate of labels that don't matter that much outside of quickly giving an idea of what your hobby is, what matters is that you are doing something you love and getting enjoyment out of it. These definitions don't have to be strict.
I only buy games I fully intend to play, usually the original complete in box unless its unreasonably expensive. I still consider myself a "collector" even if I will literally only collect what I want to play because I still have bare condition requirements. A player becomes a collector when they finish the game and put it on the shelf anyway. I dont think I need to buy random things I wouldnt play to be a collector by your 1st definition there. I have been recently trying to get complete version of games I already own loose and have finished, certainly seems like the definition of collecting.
I got recommended this video completely randomly, but idgaf I AGREE! 6:00 this is so true, and its crazy how people in video games dont understand this when in the world of cars its super obvious. In terms of being a good car, a 6th generation Corvette is better than a 2nd generation Corvette in just about every conceivable way. Yet a C2 goes for like triple the price of a C6. No one complains about this because it's obvious why.
Thank you so much for watching! That’s a great analogy, might have to use that one down the road. I’m sure the same analogies could be made for just about every collectibles hobby. Really appreciate you taking the time to comment!
Serious collectors are very important for game preservation. And it’s going to become more and more apparent as time goes on. Sometime after guys like you pass on, these huge collections are going to treasure troves. Like museums to gaming history.
The like-dislike ratio 😆 damn, I guess this ruffled some feathers. Anyway, I think I'm both. I buy old physical copies of games not only to have and preserve them, but to play them. And I don't care about condition. I'll take games with the labels scratched off. I just want to play the OG games on OG hardware and I've never flipped a retro game for profit. So I'd say I'm 80% a gamer and 20% a collector. Also these eBay prices for the nostalgia I want to re-experience is rooooough.
ruffled the heck out of some feathers my guy
Dude you need to chill
I feel like you're lying by omission on the reason why people get upset and why video game prices have skyrocketed. Actually rare games? Got it, makes sense to be priced high. Your pokemon friend spent _how much_ on the games? Pokemon games are not at all rare, theyre one of the most sold games across a whole franchise, there is no shortage of cartridges for them. People really do buy those up and set the prices high to create artificial value, collectors dont really do that with comics so its not a great comparison. You can just read a comic online, for an out of print game, you must have the hardware and knowledge to setup the emulator(as well as performing _technically_ illegal actions), which isn't hard but 90 percent of casual consumers are not taking the time to do that, they just want the game, and pop it into a console. Most games are not officially available anymore, rereleases and remasters are statistically an exception. 87 percent of games are out of print as of 2023 (that number has increased with more games shutting servers down or ceasing digital distribution since) according to a study from gamehistory dot org. Adding scalpers to that equation and you get disproportionate prices and a market more competitive than it should be. So when the aftermarket has gotten so out of hand It's understandable people are annoyed when the pool of games dwindle because resellers buy 20 and mark them up and leave them in a bin to rot. Not to collect, but in hopes a sucker will cave and buy them for a ridiculous price , with the lower availability only being a thing because singular persons buy many multiple copies for that artificial rarity. It's plagued the toy collecting community where newly released toys are gone in minutes and then marked up 3x on ebay. Again, that doesn't happen with comic collecting unless its a limited edition but thats a given.
I love playing videos games, i have played almost every game that i have bought, but like you said i am nearly getting priced out on anything older than 7th gen. I have seen games that i payed 20$ for go for 60$ recently, and consoles i've payed 50$ or less for are now a few hundred ( looking at you dreamcast, payed 20$ online and 4$, now see them for 200$).
I do have a backlog. I do want to start drilling down and finishing my backlog I do not have the same time to play and finish games that I had, when I was a child or even a young adult But... Maybe one day, I'll get fired from my job and have 3 to 6 months (or longer) to finally 'dine like a pig'
Great video! I love games, playing games & even obsessing over them. However I come from music/tapes/records and your points are just as valid there. Having limited space, I had to choose what I wanted to collect and video games got ixnayed because I'd rather play them than setup storage/space. Now to tie this into record collecting vs listening...
Idk, your coworker sounds like a “Pokémon Collector” to me? I get your point about “primary vs secondary intent,” but I think there are some ‘collectors’ that are equally users/enjoyers of the thing. I play magic the gathering, and someone can develop a particular collection with the intent that all of their cards are used in some way (usually they either they go into a deck or a cube). This is one of those situations where I’d argue they both want the thing for the reason it was created (ie to play MTG) and to further develop their collection equally. (And to your semantic point, I have yet to meet someone who has not referred to their amalgamation of Magic cards as a “collection” regardless of cards being in a deck or not… lol) So no, I don’t think collectors HAVE to fit into this mold that you described (ie either collector or enjoyer) even if that is often the case.
I disagree. I'll use your same example of Okami. There's reasons to revisit the original, you can prefer the art style, prefer the different versions, play on a CRT, and maybe just don't own the newest hardware. You have a very stringent view on collecting, assuming that collecting is just about getting the first prints. That's just a subsection of collecting. This videos only point was semantical and a waste of time lol. Like you prefer collecting via having early copies on a shelf it seems. Other people prefer collecting the original consoles with time accurate TVs for use. They're both preserving and collecting the past. The collector you describe sounds like an annoying person who is overly consumeristic. Depressing in a hobby that's already so focused on consuming media. They deserve to be made fun of online lol

I'll take splitting hairs for 500 Alex
Sega Master System games with THE CANADIAN SPELLING in the title. Now that I've mentioned it, you can't "unsee" it. You now realize your collection won't be complete until you own both "Parlor Games" and "Parlour Games". Thank me later.
@@eiselmazard4716 lol this is the kind of insane thinking I’m here for
Unexpected bonus: the Canadian version gets you a monochrome manual IN BOTH ENGLISH AND FRENCH. @@birddoggaming
Honestly i hate those people that immediately dismiss the wii or ps2 version of okami, just because the HD version exists... and it doesnt even look that much better AND handles more faithfully on the wii.
says he isn't gatekeeping repeatedly continues to gatekeep what counts or doesn't count as videogame collecting
Wow. So you’re saying games aren’t meant to be played? - char retro
I don’t think you answered the question about collecting I have which is, when does it become a cognitive disorder? For example, I purchased a copy of the legendary edition of Halo 2 because it’s a sentimental and definitive game for me. Was it totally rational? Yes, I no longer have my original copy of the game since it got lost. But when someone who lives and breathes by scowering eBay and FB Marketplace to suck up every game they can like a vacuum, I think that is a disorder. Collecting is a cute term for it, but it’s more akin to compulsive hoarding. In conclusion the venn diagram you shared is only in tension because one group, the “collectors”, some whom I think are very genuine people, create scarcity. “Players” don’t create scarcity, we wait for the reprint. Cheers
It’s incredible to me how r/gamecollecting gets mad at people for collecting video games
i posted a photo of my game collection 18 ish months ago said i predominantly collect the wii and xbox 360 and i got ripped into my 50+ people for collecting them consoles and for having funko pops in my photo. deleted the post and never posted in the reddit again
This "video essay" has very little of video - it's pretty much just an essay. If I were you, I would start refeering to things by their actual names.
ahhhhhh you almost got me with that one! very good comment
It doesn't matter what you want to do with your collection it's your choice.
I collect video game guides. And this summer I tried to sit down and finally finish Castlevania Symphony of the night. That guide is one of the more expensive guides I have. And normally I set up the guide on a choir/sheet music holder and clamp open the book. But after 20 mins I realized I was going to trash the book trying to use it. So I’m torn because I love to look at the guides but trashing them VS going online and using a guide with CTRL+F is SO MUCH EASIER assuming there is no pop ups. But regardless I love looking through them from time to time and even I’m proud of looking at the on my shelf. And that is difference because usually people say “why buy it if it just sits on the shelf” … but I have bought stuff and never used it and feel bad about it, BUT with my video games and guides when I see them on the shelf… I just don’t feel bad for some reason, I just like looking at them organized on the shelf.
And this is why I refer to mine as my library. Some games are a collectors piece. Like Cuphead I already own on Xbox and PC Digitally. I bought it at gamestop to have physical collection piece. Some games I buy to play and they just happen to join the collection. But a library is meant to both be used and collected. Its the best of both worlds.
I like that a lot actually, very relatable for the majority of people
Every game I have, I have wonderful memories attached to it. And they arent the original (Mainly because of tragic moving results). And while I enjoy slotting them into a system and playing for a few hours, I ultimately like to take a look through, and bask in my wonderful memories of them. Me and Mom playing through our Lufia SNES games. Me and my best friend Stephen, staying up all through a night to completely beat Ocarina of Time, etc. Mostly N64, Super Nintendo and GameBoy Advanced games that make me think of friends, family, acquaintances, some of whom arent around anymore. 😅 I've been told I'm not a "real gamer", I've also been lambasted for not being enough of a collector, too. Cant win for losing. 😂
