Videos recorded of #ClosePass and other unbelievable driving while I'm just out and about riding my bike in (mostly!) Kent
I'm an advanced motorcyclist (RoSPA Gold - highest civilian motoring qualification) so if you're going to comment about lane positioning or riding primary, then please ensure your training and Highway Code knowledge is up there with mine otherwise you'll look as much a buffoon as the drivers in these videos. Everyone should be made to read Roadcraft, the Police motoring handbooks before getting a licence.

To ride a bicycle you should pass a test and learn the Highway Code to make the roads safer.....
Licensing motorists means they read the Highway Code and pass a test. Without these, they would just turn right when they shouldn't and wouldn't give way when they don't have priority....oh....
When all motorists don't have such flagrant disregard for the rules of the road, then we can talk about the dangers of bicycles not obeying the rules of the road.

Kent Police confirmed this as NFA this week. I would dearly love to be round their decision making table to hear quite how they reach decisions. Fast? Yes. Commercial vehicle? Yes. Narrow singe track road? Yes. Clear visibility and zero chance of "sorry mate, I didn't see you?"? Yes. I'm not quite sure what other factors are necessary to prosecute, because at this speed, any contact would likel...

Clearly in too much of a hurry to drive safely. I never understood why drivers in vans with logos outlining who they are drive in this manner. Watch the driver in front; safe distance, considerate speed, and continues on their merry way. The impatient van behind them clearly wanted to punish for making the car driver safely so executed the classic #PunishmentPass. Not quite close enough for a r...

And no dramas about consequences; #KentPolice won't even ask for the footage, and then they'll send you a letter saying "please don't do it again". The Highway Code stipulates a minimum distance of 1.5m which should be increased where the speed of the vehicle and/or size of the vehicle goes up. Interestingly, if a HGV passes less than 1m from ANY object (not a cyclist, but a stationary car or object) then it is a fail on the HGV test. This truck passes me less than a metre, absolutely horrendous. Yet apparently, only warrants a warning let...

What annoys me about this is a couple of things; the car in front executes a perfect pass, so they have someone right in front to copy. Abusing other road users and forcing cars onto the pavement does not make roads safer. He probably hadn't seen you, and if he had then you were probably going faster than he might have expected. Common sense is sometimes needed in these situations. Your "right of way" does not override everything else.
You could have slowed off, i know how annoying it is but the car was there first and had a reasonable assumption that you would have held back till they made it through. It does however speak to a mindset I have had several drivers drive at me because there where cars parked and they did not recognise my right of way or decided would move and make room. In general people are better with cyclists and have no issue with me taking defensive positioning when I need to.
@@alexwalker9803 the car wasn’t there first and had a clear view of me approaching. See the van give way at the first one for how to do it.
@FolkestoneCameraBike it was there first it had clearly passed the hashings.yes it could see you and you could see it too and as a vulnerable road user you could see it had committed before you got there. You should have stopped or slowed more to protect yourself and that situation could have been avoided I would have slowed to give them the room to clear it and then gone.
@@alexwalker9803 no they hadn’t passed the line. I saw them from miles back and they could have seen me and yielded. Their barreling through was their decision, and it was a wrong one.
@FolkestoneCameraBike every cyclists makes a bad call and this was your one. I would have made the same decision as the car regardless of you being on a bicycle or in a car because did not have the right to the priority given the distance you where from the narrowing. I watched multiple times. Regardless of your belief that you had priority the car had clearly committed and you had more than enough room to slow to a pace where the car could have cleared without causing the incident you caused. This behaviour is what gets other cyclists like myself tarred too.
@@alexwalker9803 what you can’t see from the camera view (on the bars) is what i could see with my eyes. As i pass the second narrow section of the three, i am out right to see right to the bottom. The car is not there. As they approach into view i am already committed to passing the third narrow section and they should yield. When you approach this from the bottom, the view is poor so you have to slow to see up the hill. That is why i’m out wide right, to be seen. They didn’t look and barrelled through.
I always wonder why there's so much conflict in this world, then I watch videos like this and realise people like you exist everywhere lol Such a non event, just make the roads flow. Its not a big deal. No one was in danger. Just bad egos and entitlement. Be the bigger man.
@@NitroNuggetTV why are you not suggesting the motorist make changes to their use of roads, only me? Surely if a flow on the roads is what you aspire for, then more cyclists achieves this. You wouldn’t need traffic calming like this if there were more people on two wheels…
@@FolkestoneCameraBike Probably because in the 10ish years I’ve been cycling in south London I’ve never let a non-event like this bother me and hamper the flow of movement. Difference between you and I is that I would’ve just eased off as it’s clearly down hill, got back on my side of the road and no one would’ve had to drive on the path. You escalated the conflict, all be it in a minor way. I’m also not in a state of delusion where I think drivers will ever be perfect, even if they’re somehow forced to read the Highway Code. I’ve had and Witnessed as many cyclists causing the same problems cars do. It’s a human problem, not a car problem. I’m content in just making sure I do the right thing and don’t feel the need to police the roads because I’ve been microscopically inconvenienced...
You were noware near the pinchpoint. They got there first. You should have held back
I disagree tbh, but it’s in a gray area for sure
@WolfysPack a big part of real driving is considering the safest thing to do, regardless of priority. The cyclist took 6-7 seconds before considering to brake when faced with the hazard ahead of them. They should have slowed down gradually when spotting the hazard ahead of them. To add to that if they had braked earlier they could have kept going at a slower pace and then neither vehicle would have needed to stop at the pinch point.
@@WolfysPack have a look at where the car was first sighted an the give way line on their side, it's well back from the pinch point and they wouldn't have been able to see the cyclist and stop at this line.

Tailgating the cyclist in front of you
@@seansean9675 it’s not tailgating, it’s drafting. The reason tailgating in a car is dangerous is because you can’t see what the car in front can see. A bicycle can see in front of the cyclist in front. The reason a car behind a bike is tailgating is because if the bike takes evasive action, the car kills the cyclist. A cyclist behind will also see the same hazard as a hazard, whereas a pothole to a car simply makes the suspension work and isn’t a dangerous hazard.

Two abreast is recommended by motoring specialists for cyclists for two reasons; 1. A line of 15 bikes is much longer than a line 7 or 8 bikes long. And the amount of room you have to give one bike means you need to cross the white line so it needs to be clear, so actually, it’s easier to pass 15 bikes two abreast safely than it is 15 bikes in single file. @@FolkestoneCameraBike "Advanced motoring lessons?" you mean pass plus? which i done over 15 year ago, your instructor takes you on the motorway after you pass the test, for a few more lessons and pointers.. The first 18 sec of the video, you and your pals are in the middle of your lane, which is fine, most of you lot keeping to the center, center left. Then it cuts to your front camera @0:19 and the lead bike is just on red painted tarmac and white line. (slow down to 0.25 speed) pause @0:19 also you can see a bus stop/lane lines, which has to be just over 2m width? then theres another 1.5m of grey tarmac till the red tarmac/white lines. Why does your lead bike need to be there... he should be where the rest of you are riding?
I’ll quote from a Traffic cop: “Ride in a position to deter and prevent dangerous and unsafe passes from those behind”. The chap is positioned there as he can see cars coming up the hill (one takes evasive action to avoid a collision with the van) as a message to the van “it’s not safe to pass here, wait”.
