    I liked your video mate, I've still got cassettes from over 40 years ago. I got back into cassettes about 2020, and a radio prog I'd reordered on a chrome tape in 1983 sounded near perfect! Only one of my tapes had a pad drop off and didn't sound too good, so I swapped the shell from a donor. Not got as many tapes as you, but certainly got a couple of hundred in my collection.

    I'm sorry but both cassette tapes and vinyl are both hot garbage! Cassettes just like vinyl can Warp, are susceptible to fungus, and eventually wear out after you play them. Cassettes also get those awful dropouts vinyl get scratches and and skips! Both medium Suck A$$!!! These people and kids that are spending hundreds of dollars on Albums and Cassandra are out of their minds! And honestly I don't know where they get the notion that somehow Tapes and Records sound better than CDs!?! These people are absolutely deluding themselves! Now Cd's can break if you drop them and most definitely if you handle them incorrectly will also get scratched but they are much more durable than Vinyl and tapes. And if properly handled they'll last you a lifetime! So I don't understand or get this big hoopla about vinyl and cassettes. It's like this whole generation has been utterly and completely brainwashed! It makes no sense at all. And you don't even have to do that much research to realize this!!!! Hell it's common sense, but I guess there's not very much common sense that goes with the human race! Lol

      It sounds like you've never heard a cassette with a proper deck and speakers. If you are, I don't think you would still think so :) Practicality is a different matter.

      @@artoahonen6763 that's a little better but you still can't get away from the tape noise. You cannot compare a needle or a tape head to a laser light that makes no contact whatsoever with a surface! Therefore CDs are the absolute cleanest and clearest way to listen to music. Again its pure science!

      @@sonicmojo Yes, cd is the most interference-free way to hear sound from these three formats. However, music is all about how it feels and what it does in the body. And in this matter, the CD in all its perfection loses to a good cassette recording. Yes, they can be damaged, I'm talking purely about the sound, which is the most important thing to me. The slight tape noise is not heard through the music. Analog audio or digital audio, I choose both. But one of them only causes the reactions that music should. Analogue sound is even therapeutic.

    • @artoahonen6763

      The best sound is on reel to reel tape, but they are impractical and expensive in the long run. Great for recording.

      @@artoahonen6763 I'm a musician, and about 25 years ago I felt exactly like you! I was all in on cassettes and Records. CDs sounded sterile to me. "Too perfect" ect, etc. But with the advancement of Technology, a lot of those issues that were present in the way that recordings were done back in the day that made the recording sound "Soulless" and overtly "Clean" have been addressed. At least if you have a good ear for sound and know what you're doing. The new tech, plugins and techniques have rendered that old moot argument, fixed. So for like the first decade or two you're partly correct as far as sound & how one hears it. But really, all you have to do, add a little bit of bass and or reduce a little bit of treble! Voila... Lol. Peace

    Better have air conditioning if collecting tapes. It's not so much magnetism but the dust/humidity complex that causes them to stick. The tape naturally is semi-moist and would likely attract fungus and humidity. Certain surfaces can attract mold like paperback books foxing or browning but it doesn't affect the integrity of the pages. You should have got your money back on that moldy oldy. Most cassettes were mass produced and most aren't rare. Hit them on your leg before you play them as that will hopefully unstick them. I appreciate cassettes about as much as I appreciate political oppression or waking up 50 pounds heavier.

    Mold on tapes can be a big problem in humid climates. On records too. I keep a de-humidifier in the room with my tapes and albums which helps a lot. Yourube just recommended your video and I like your channel so far. You make a lot of good points about cassettes. I used them a ton in the 80’s with my Sony Walkman WM-2 along with vinyl records. Now I mix it up with CDs, 8-tracks, reel-to-reel, vinyl and cassettes. A lot of times I would buy the record, record it onto a blank cassette and listen to it on the go or swap albums with friends. You can do the same thing these days as NOS blank tapes are cheap and plentiful although not being made anymore. Buy a nice serviced deck or an “ebay special” a tech can look over and refurbish. There’s a UA-cam channel called “Cassette Comeback Archive” with videos looking at all the blank brands. The general opinion is that in a good deck from the past, even a cheaper normal Type I bias tape can sound as good as the source you’re recording from even without Dolby NR and the prerecorded tapes they’re selling today for top dollar are using cheap tape , no Dolby (no longer available) and sound like garbage.

    • @nick_vee
      @nick_vee Місяць тому

      I agree about the mold and the missing felt pressure pads. But both can be fixed instead of tossing the tape. Felt squares can be super glued back on with a tiny drop of super glue gel and a tweezers. Mold is a little tougher but can be removed quickly and you should always check for it before playing a tape as it will cover your heads, pinch rollers and capstan and contaminate other good tapes. I take a cheap sacrificial cassette player like a Walmart shoebox type, fold an alcohol prep pad gently around a section of tape near the pressure pad, cover with a tiny piece of masking tape to hold it there and FF then swapping with a clean one and REW. You should see the mold on the pad. Just do a FF and REW with no alcohol pad then set the tape aside to dry. Check your deck’s heads for any traces of mold left over and clean with a q-tip and alcohol. You should be good to go.

    Cassette tapes were the shit in the 90s, because the Sony Discman would skip CONSTANTLY!!! So, even though I had both, if I was on foot (I was a NYer, so always on foot), it was the walkman, hands down... it also fit a lot better in your pocket.

    I had cassettes in the 80s and I buy and support them now simply because they are analog format. Lps and cassettes are the only 2 forms of analog. Therefore if I can't find something on vinyl or if the cost is too high, I opt for cassette. To me, analog is the most genuine authentic experience. That may not be the case for other people but for me, it's analog.

    Great video. I think cassettes have become my favorite of the three formats I collect, although all three formats have their pros and cons. Tape are still, for the most part, the cheapest of the three formats, which means that with a lot of the music we listen to, it's still possible to get some fairly cheap new music on physical format. I'm normally not willing to pay more than $10-13 for a cassette tape, except if it's a rare old demo tape in which case I don't mind shelling out a bit more. In a lot of South-Eastern Asian countries, they have a lot of issues with mold on tapes, but - as you say - if you have the time and patience, itis possible to clean off the mold. I have a couple pf tapes where I need to replace the pressure pad. It's definitely a good idea to have some cheap 'spare-part tapes' lying around. I have already had to glue the pad back on a couple of tapes. And I've had to splice together some snapped tapes. But I find that repairing tapes and other 'tape care' activities is an enjoyable part of the hobby.

    Great update Sean! Awesome to see you picked up Death's Symbolic & Dying Fetus Reign Supreme. Thanks for the mention! Yeah, Six Feet Under's 13 is so overlooked. It's actually a really good album.

      Thanks, Tony! Man, I am on a major SFU and Dying Fetus kick right now. One good thing about living under a rock for most of these 2 bands careers is, I can go back and listen to all the killer albums with fresh ears. I am diggin their stuff. These won't be the last SFU and DF records you'll see on my collection update. Thanks again for watching for all the support. \m/
