Trench rescues and firefighting stories with Joe Sarber Paulding Cty, GA Fire Department | Ep. 197
In this episode of The Real ResQ Podcast, host Jason Quinn is joined by Joe Sarber, a firefighter from Georgia.
They discuss Sarber's journey to becoming a firefighter. He shares a story about his first structure fire and all the rookie mistakes he made. He also discusses the challenges and lessons he learned from these experiences, highlighting the importance of teamwork and continuous learning in the fire service.
Sarber tells about a rescue he and his team pulled out of an active fire. They had to go into the house, find the victim, and pull the victim to safety. They accomplished this task and their rescue earned him a Public Safety Appreciation Award from the Paulding County Board of Commissioners.
Sarber talks in great detail about the trench rescue call he responded to as a firefighter. He describes the challenges and dangers involved in it and the specialized training required to execute these types of rescues.
Sarber explains how they called in a neighboring county's department with a semi truck setup for trench rescue to assist. He recounts the process of shoring up the walls and using a vacuum truck to remove dirt around the patient. The rescue involved cutting holes in the walls of two houses under construction to create a lifting point.
We conclude our conversation with Sarber expressing the impact of the experience on him and his desire to learn more about trench rescues. Enjoy!

    I'm preparing myself to join the Coast Guard with 1 mission in mind. Become a rescue swimmer. No plan B. I started my journey nearly a year ago at 275lbs not eating or living right. Now I am 185 and very tone. Went from 42 in waist to 30in waist! I've been working on getting my mind right. But getting my body to the point where it can perform has also helped. I swim almost everyday with and without fins and run at least an hour a day and do tons of pull-ups/chin-ups. Plus gym time. I'm 36 years old prior service US Army Helicopter technician and also a medic, but I will join the brotherhood soon. Thanks for the interviews. I really enjoy hearing the stories. What happens when your in flight and you need to intubate your patient? It takes space to get behind the patient and get to their level to see the vocal cords to get it done? If they’re on a backboard, or in a stokes it seems like there just wouldn’t be enough room in the aircraft for all of that? Thanks

    • @therealresq
      @therealresq 5 місяців тому

      This is a scenario and circumstance situation. It would depend on how long the flight would be. What aircraft you're flying in. The few times I have been involved with this, we were on the ground when the intubation happened. Either stabilize the paitent and tube them before you take off or as soon as you land before you shut down. As you probably know, there are the treatment plans that you can do if you're not in a position to intubate. This is definitely a deeper conversation. Happy to discuss more if you'd like. Feel free to email me at jason@therealresq.com.

    • @starofitaly
      @starofitaly 2 місяці тому

      Hey, specific to the story I shared, the patient was intubated in the helicopter using a Glide Scope. It’s basically a small mobile version of the laryngoscope/fiber optic camera that you would see used in a surgical/hospital environment. Like any tool, there are limitations but usually they work fantastic and make it easy to visualize your landmarks and place your ET tube. Great question and I hope you enjoyed the episode. My name is Gary. I’m the Gary that Bob is speaking of flying the Otter on his final rescue in the Coast Guard. There was not enough room on the helo to take all 10 of us so they took 4 people to Kanak Island where a Cessna 180 was waiting on the beach to take them to Cordova and to the hospital to be checked out. Bob stayed with me and the other 5 passengers. We chatted until the helo returned. He noticed my U.S. Navy ball cap and asked me what years I was in. I told him 1964 to 1978. He stuck out his hand and said “thank you for serving”. I was stunned into silence. I’m not gonna lie I even got a tear in my eye. I was 54 yo at the time and no one had ever thanked me for wearing the uniform. After that he would stop by when he was in Cordova to check on me to see how I was doing. I’m here to tell you there is no finer human being on this planet. I consider it an honor to know him and call him a friend. “No brain no pain” he would always say when I would see him running on the Copper River Highway. Enjoy your retirement Bob. You deserve it.

      Hello Gary. Thank you so much for this message. Please note that I have passed this message on to Bob. I enjoyed listening to his story about you guys. If you'd be willing, I'd love to hear it directly from you. Moreover, if you have any rescue type stories while you were in the Navy, I'd love to hear all about those as well. I would also like to follow Bob and tell you the same, "Thank you for your service!" Feel free to reach out to me at anytime. jason@therealresq.com.
