Very nice example, I remember doing questions like this in school for exams. I think only +2 is the correct answer, but if this problem was started on the second line where w^2 = 7w^2 - 24 then you can have -2 too :)

That's incorrect. w=-2 is not a solution to the equation. Yes, sqrt(4) can be +ve or -ve 2, only because (-2) squared is 4. But the equation only asks for the principle square root. So, the only correct answer is +2.
