Fog. Rain. Slick Rocks. Ep 70
Done hiking for now. Made it to mile 1786.5 at NH-25. Just 10 miles shy of Glencliff where the Whites start. So frustrated but thankful for the opportunity. I learned a lot and am ready for more challenges after I heal.

Slippery rocks are bad! I fell and broke my leg on the Appalachian Trail on a section hike in New Jersey last year (Delaware Water Gap NRA). I had to come out on a bodyboard and have immediate surgery. Thank goodness the body heals over time.
@@mathfan0918 glad you healed. I am improving. Will be back next summer
Hey Last! I can't believe this popped up on my feed. Lemons here, from the Moose Mountain shelter. You won't believe this coincidence, but I slipped and hurt my foot on July 5th on the climb down from the first peak after Moose Mountain and had to end my hike at the Lyme-Dorchester Road. Must have been some bad gris gris at that shelter. I hope you get healed up quick.
@@bobklare4894 What a coincidence!! I had to go home to Houston. Doctor said wear a boot 3 weeks then rehab several more. Bad sprain to ankle tendon. I am off the trail for the rest of the hiking year. I will just have to start again next summer. Hope your recovery is going netter than mine
One negative comment after another...must have set some kind of record. There is always a downside that can be focused on...by the same condition, there are many positive things and natural beauty on the Trail to focus on. I would recommend anyone who intends to actually be able to complete a successful Thru-Hike to condition your mind on the latter example. Best of luck to you with the ankle, and a successful recovery.
So sorry to hear about your ankle. Those rocks are tough!! Especially when wet. Let me know if you need any help
My favorite part of the trail was the 302-ish miles from Katahdin to Goram NH. There's a lot of one mile an hour terrain in there. There are places where a thru-hiker with over 1500 miles experience would be best served to slow their pace back to an 8-12 mile day and just enjoy it. Or not. Best wishes in each step of your journey.
@@genuineimpulse9134 sound advice. Thanks
You wouldnt be 'last' if you knew how to pack up fast.
@@ZombieKingThe3rd True. I was first out of camp today.
I am in New England - those rain storms the last few days were crazy and very uncommon. Hope you have smooth sailing for the rest of your trip
Don’t lose faith! Of all your 63 episodes, you seemed more down yesterday than ever before. I’m glad you rose up and carried on. Lots of people are rooting for you. Stay strong and don’t lose the joy in the small things that make hiking so special! I truly love how you always appreciate the little things even when it’s cold, steep, hot, wet, muddy, rocky….!
@@scottkahney4992 thanks for the encouragement. The sun is shining and mentally I am good now.
Good (Thursday) Morning to you on your adventurous summer (A.T.) backcountry hike. UA-cam algorithms led me to see and "listen" to your video this morning. It is ( Thurs. 6.27.24 8:46am MST Boise, ID = 10:46am EST) I'm a New Englander, born and educated in Connecticut and lived most of my life in N.H. and in Portland, Maine area. In the 1990's, I did an early summer morning weekend backcountry solo hike on the (Maine) "Speck Pond Mountain Trail" If my memory is correct, this little mountain pond is at the (Speck Pond A.T. Shelter area) as I met summer A.T. thru hikers at this shelter. Speck Pond mountain shelter (A.T.) Trail is western Maine, in the vicinity of the Mahoosic section ( AKA " The Hardest Mile on the Trail") as many thru hikers have remembered it, anyways when I saw your video of the Trail conditions after heavy rains, I sighed and emphasized , knowing you would have to splash your journey through wet slippery A.T. trails. Ugh! I think and believe , some hiking in sandals is preferable than wet sneakers. I'm glad you made it to the Stratton, VT (A.T.) hikers home hostel for a day of bodily rest from the Trail, I will subscribe to your channel, and will look for your A.T. Trail updates. Shalom to you, in the LORD! Dennis
@@Bible.Jude1.25 thanks for the encouragement and blessing.
Last! You are doing great, this is difficult terrain and the weather conditions kinda suck lately for sure. Keep plugging my friend, I’m cheering you on! 🐜
@@nataleebyers9310 thanks. Good to hear from you. Took a zero and mentally feel great. Ready for Hanover by July 3.
Good going! Thanks for the update. Hard Hat.
love the vids beautiful scenery
I found this about the origins of Nuclear Lake. Of course, the first image to pop into my head was the Nuclear Lake from The Simpsons, complete with three-eyed fish jumping about and a pipe openly dumping radioactive waste. As it turns out, this actually isn’t all that far from the truth. In 1958, an experimental nuclear fuel research lab was set up on the shores of a lake in Pawling, NY, by Nuclear Development Associates. According to this 1955 NY Times article, the remote site was chosen because “it was the largest convenient and available tract that was not crossed by public roads and could be adequately guarded for secret experiments,” which would involve “uranium and other radioactive materials.” How reassuring!
Crazy. Glad I didn’t drink the water in the area
Great to see you’re back on trail. I just binged all your new episodes and caught up. Now I can now follow along REAL TIME. I love the tree and wildlife identification. Happy trails!
Looks like a lot of wilderness coming up. Get some rest.
Good tip. I need a zero day.
Also good thing button bush likes swamps. Ours are in the pond right now🤣
Beech tree is smooth, not birch.
I checked closely. Aspen.
The fern id’s as sensitive fern.
Hi Last! Congratulations to a great trail pal!! I wish you all the best on your northern section!
Thanks. Enjoy the Colorado trip. My body is recovering now and my list of chores is quickly getting smaller. I will start planning in January
It’s been great following along!
Congratulations!
Safe travels
Thanks for sharing. This had to have been a high mile day for you? Planning about 22 miles in this area in a few weeks.
It was beautiful and I wish you a great trip
That is nuts!
Nice views of the Smokies! It's neat to be high enough to see where you're going and where you've been.
It was great meeting you here Last. Enjoy the rest of your hike! I will be following your videos. - Seeker
I'm so glad your leg is back in order and I hope it will last you the remaining 300 miles. Nice forests and scenery. Rocky falls in surrounding fall colors never disappoints. Thanks for all the updates.
I hope so too!
Hello from coastal Virginia
I love those Gardettos snacks! Looks like you're eating pretty well. Hello from Denver!
I'm glad to see you're still at it, making good progress, and staying healthy.
You’re doing great! I love the food review. That massive oak tree was incredible.
Awesome, enjoy your time
Excellent video, very interesting.
Awesome share, have a great time, new friend here. Hello from coastal Va
Welcome along the journey.
@@LastontheTrail my pleasure
Fun! I love the vultures and the view where you’re at. Chiggers still bad?
Chiggers are terrible on this section South. I have avoided them. Lots of DEET is the only way.
So when you get your AT tattoo for finishing the whole thing, what's your tat going to be?
I have one in mind but will wait until I get to Maine.
Ouchies, dad! I read something the other day that said "You can cuss the whole time, but just don't give up!"
Actually I am hiking to reduce my anger. Can’t be angry that the trail goes up or at wasps for doing their thing. Or rain etc. does not reduce pain or sore feet but does not occupy my brain either.
It looks like you're staying strong and having a great time.
What is your trail name?
Last. I was always at the end of the line as a scout leader. Thus the UA-cam channel is “Lastonthetrail”
I did this section Sept, 2022. Decided to do sections from Harpers Ferry to Carlisle to round up to 100 miles of the AT. Done with the rocks. Gonna do C&O canal next year in the spring. Based in Baltimore.
The rocks will get you. The roller coaster was bad too. Shenandoah was great. Recommend since you are close
I hope you like the Altra trail runners. I like mine, but I wish the soles were a little stiffer when the trail is rocky. I'm glad you got to see your bear!
Wish I could have seen the bear. Too bad about that first spring. Hoping the water is good the rest of the way. 🤞
I see Ben is using your old tent. Nice! Sorry to hear you are having more pump issues at home. Cathy should have called me. I work cheap! I hope you aren't having any shin splints. Wish I could be there.
I see Ben got some trail runners. I hope they work out for him and he is blister free!
Altras but a small blister yesterday on pinky toe
Hi Ben! Hope y’all are doing ok!
I love this salamander!!
Cool trail magic with the apple tree. And their ripe too!
I was glad to hear the rollercoaster is over in this same video and it didn’t carry over to the next one!
I’m loving following along!
Ouch! Man, it got you good. How’s it doing now?
