That's a really good question. To my knowledge the "Ten Phrase" version of this chant died out in China and never made it to Korea. I'm not even really sure how it got to Japan - but Japan appears to be the only place where the practice has survived. We just use the Sino-Japanese pronunciation. It has such a wonderful rhythm and sound to it. There is a longer version, the "King Kao Kannon Sutra" which is still going strong in China. Sheng Yen reintroduced the chant with Mandarin pronunciation to the Chinese speaking Buddhist world. But even though that version is "the same" it sounds completely different. He (or someone working with him) put it to some pretty schmalzy music.

"Dizang" is the same as "Jizo" in Japanese Buddhism. The original Sanskrit name for the Bodhisattva is Ksitigarbha (क्षितिगर्भ), which the Chinese chose to transmorgrify into 地藏 (pinyin: Dìzàng). The Japanese "Jizo" and the Korean "Jijang" are just different ways of pronouncing 地藏. Just like "zen" and "seon" are different ways of pronouncing 禪, which in Mandarin is pronounced Chán. Zhiru Ng's book is a modern academic book (although written by a Buddhist nun), but it is in essence about the same subject: Bodhisattvas. Ng's book is very focussed on just one Bodhisattva, and mostly focuses on historical issues about how this Bodhisattva first came to prominence in Chinese Buddhism back in the 6th to 10th centuries. The Japanese version is also called "The Great Dharani" or "The Great Compassionate Dharani", but the exact wording varies. In his "Manual of Zen Buddhism", D.T. Suzuki called it "The Dharani of the Great Compassionate One". In the "Soto School Scriptures For Daily Services And Practice" it is called the "Great Compassion Dharani (Daihi shu 大悲呪)": www.sotozen.com/eng/practice/sutra/pdf/01/02.pdf . In the ZMM liturgy it is referred to as "Daihishin Dharani": zmm.org/teachings-and-training/daihishin-dharani/ . I'm really glad you asked, because it's forced me to look more carefully at the Sino-Japanese version.

Yeah - there's a lot of supernatural/magical stuff in Buddhism, and Western Buddhists tend to either be unaware of it, or they actively try to supress it. Personally I think it's fine for people to pick and choose up to a point. But at some point it is necessary to respectfully engage with "actual" Buddhism, as it is actually practiced by the vast majority of the tens of millions of Buddhists in the world, and as it has actually been practiced for 2500 years.

@@mindisbuddha I’ve been to SE Asia including Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, as well as China , India, and Tibet. Buddhism as practiced there, be it Theravada, Mahayana, or Vajrayana, is theistic like praxis. As opposed stressing the rational and non-theistic or atheistic strains, as is pretty much how western convert Buddhism is practiced. I’ve been to local (US) ethnic Chan centers where the devotional theistic-like praxis prevails.

It is one of the chants that many Buddhists around the world include in their regular practice. Technically it is not really "part" of anything else, it is a standalone practice. In the recording we repeat the chant 9 times, but many people do this (like a mantra) over and over 100, 500, or even more times. I'm not sure if that answers your question - if not please reply again and I'll try to do a better job!

It is comprehensible if you know the meanings of the Chinese characters. For example, 舍 利 子 是 諸 法 空 相 (pronounced "sa ri ja shi je boep kong sang") means "Shariputra (舍利子) is (是) all (諸) dharma (法) emptiness (空) marked (相)". Which, in more idiomatic English is something like "Shariputra, all dharmas are marked with emptiness." It is common for people throughout East Asia to learn Chinese characters, but they are pronounced differently depending upon whether your native language is Japanese, or Korean, or Vietnamese, or Mandarin, or Cantonese, etc. If one wants to be precise, one would say that this is "The Sino-Korean pronunciation of the version of the Heart Sutra attributed to Xuanzang", but it is usually just called "the Korean version of the Heart Sutra".
