Roadtrip Pitstop- Idaho Sharptail Grouse
I decided to make a quick pitstop on my way home from South Dakota for a quick sharp-tail grouse hunt. We were fortunate enough to get into some birds against a fantastic backdrop. Sharp-tail grouse continue to be my favorite upland bird

It's time again for my annual trek out to South Dakota to chase wild roosters in the long grass prairies. This year was certainly had its challenges, with hotter and drier weather than normal, finding and recovering birds proved to be a challenge.

Dixie, Chester, and I head to the Snake River canyon in pursuit of valley quail. Despite steep slopes, wet rocks, and dense fog we have the best quail hunt to date.

We've had a slow start to the duck season so far this year. I've been scouting out and trying a few new places on the Snake river. I hope you enjoy the highlights from our first few times out.

VALLEY QUAIL HUNT TURNS INTO MEDICAL EMERGENCY(DOG GOES DOWN)
Nice video my friend! What beautiful country! Keep strugglin' and bring us along to watch!!!
Man, I wasnt there but those first birds didnt look like Sage Grouse. The smallest Sage Grouse Ive ever seen if so. Honestly, they looked like common pigeons to me on the video. But, I wasnt there and sometimes the videos looks off. Happy Hunting
@@uplandwild4136 the video must obscure the size of them or something. They were pheasant sized birds. They looked like yearly sage grouse to me. I also found a bunch of piles of tar in that area. I'm no stranger to being wrong though. Lol. Thanks for watching
@@strugglinoutdoors Ive been wrong a lot and I wasnt there. Ive killed a few and have a couple of videos on UA-cam hunting them. Upland Wild.
@@uplandwild4136 ill check them out.
I think you’re right that number six shot really works for upland birds larger than quail. I hope you do some chukar videos and spank them!
@@ronblackburn3683 when states report the best chukar numbers in 40 years it's a sure fire way for me to have my worse season to date. I should have a chukar vid up next. Thanks for the ongoing support
Man what a cool find that bird was buried deep. I'm glad you hung with it. Thanks for sharing.
@@jakef1977 I appreciate the support man. Thanks for watching
That was a great effort to recover the rooster by the lake! Way to go Chester! And yes I have experienced pheasant sitting in and roosting in trees when I hunted them in southeastern Pennsylvania/ northeastern Maryland.
@@ronblackburn3683 We ended up doing quite of bit of tracking cripples this year with how hot and dry it was. Looks like I'll be spending some time training tracking abilities on my next pup. Having a strong tracker is definitely an under rated tool sometimes. Thanks for the support.
As much as you would like to have Chester you can still upland hunt with Dixie. Good luck.
Glad to see you're still alive. Time for some chuker videos
Looks like a super fun time glad you guys joke and laugh like we do. Thanks for sharing
Nice job. This is the first video I have seen from you this year. I am uploading my day 1 video from SoDak now.
I see lots of fir trees (preferred needles for Blue Grouse) and open meadows with some sagebrush. It should hold blue (dusky) grouse. go figure, but the dogs hunted nicely and you shot true. Good hunt.
Good to see you back! I did some strugglin of my own in Northern Nevada last month for my first Chukar hunt.
@@h2oburke did you have any luck?
@@strugglinoutdoors ya I was up there North of Elko. Got into Chuks and Huns. Beautiful country up there.
great shot
That's awesome when you have to be your own dog 🐕.
dice is a great little retriever😊
Hello, Can I ask what kind of gun /choke you are using ? Thx
@@SteveKeeton this video I'm using a benelli super black eagle 3 that I won in a raffle. I typically run a mod choke for everything. The benelli is a sweet gun
@@strugglinoutdoors Ok, Thx for the reply. Nice gift, and shooting!
That is so funny my boys used to point cattle and horses LOL!
Can you use an outboard on the snake or do you need a shallow drive boat. Love the vids keep em coming
@@brettschultz5150 hey thanks for the support. There are a few stretches that you could do fine with a outboard and a lot of places you can't. I wouldn't try it anywhere in the dark. That river fluctuates a ton on a day to day basis
Surface drive with adjustable trim would do fine with low water level.
Is the paddle upstream back rough?
Thanks for the video and awareness of a potential problem. I carry Gu packets for myself but I never considered them for my dog. I’ll throw some extras in my vest next season. I had the same emergency sling but I quit carrying it when I got my Final Rise vest. They have a G hook system that allows you to take apart the game bag pocket and use it to carry a dog. You’re definitely right, everyone should be prepared to carry out your dog; could be a season or could be a bad gash from barbed wire. Thanks!
what choke
THIS GUY IS A YUPPIE !!!!! HE IS NOT A REAL CHUKAR HUNTER !!!!!
real chukar hunters know their dogs need enter tube boots !!!!!
Good dogs!!!. Good content.
My dog Gordon setter female was doing the same thing. I had to get on her hard ... keep her tight and correct her. Now she holds point and hunts like a pro
Keep him tight and in sight .hard correct him ...hele stop that. Good video ..nice country
Hello good videos i have hunting videos on youtube
What beautiful country! A little off season work and you will have you a bang up bird dog. Keep sharing !
We are definitely going to hit it hard this summer. Hopefully it will pay off. He's getting to the end of his hunting career. It'd be nice to end real strong. Thanks for the support
Northeast Montanna was terrible,ALL the cover was baled!!!! They are getting $110 dollars a ton for hay because of the draught!!!! Ive been hunting there for 18 years, last year was the worst!!!! You cant bale all the nesting cover during hatching season!!!!!!! It will be no better this year!!! On top of that there was an 85% increase in the no of hunters,it was CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From OnX North Dakota looks no better. I was thinking it must have been due to the hay shortages too. That said, I did eventually have luck hunting an uncut field and hedge row adjacent to a baled field in 22'. So change your strategy. The birds went somewhere. I'm still going to head out.
Awesome video thanks for sharing! What size shot were you using in that CZ? And was it lead or steel? I’m assuming it was lead because you live in a free state
I had 3 inch #6s. Probably a mix between steel and lead. I have both and don't seperate them out. Thanks for watching man
@@strugglinoutdoors Right on, thanks man! 👍👍
D, for Duh, because most chukar hunting is just damn tough, start to finish. I think it was a successful day!
Great video! That place is a Chukar gold mine!
Definitely wasn't expecting to see so many birds that day.
Ok I have an Elment in a 20 gauge. New out of box it shot low left . Moved the plate in the stock and it shoots really nice now.
Did you patern the gun to you
I'm still playing around with it. I got it fitting me really well, but I still adjusting the drop shims. My wife has the exact same model. It baffles me that I shoot that one so we'll and this one so poorly. Makes me curious if the barrel is slightly defective
I hope this sweet puppy is okay we need updates though
He's doing great. You can see how I fixed it and how he perked right up on my channel
Poor baby I hope he is ok your doing a great job bless you both
Epilepsy is what my guess is. I had a Labrador that had it. He had to go on pills for the rest of his life. I had to stop hunting him. I sure hope your puppy is ok.
As you have seen Adam (Desk Jockey Outdoors) and I disappoint his dog as well 😅
@strugginoutdoors Is this hunt in Nevada
This is southern Idaho. Nevada is on my short list of places to hunt though.
Sooo the first 2 hunts I was using my new weatherby element. Clearly I struggled to make good shots with it. The last hunt I had a different weatherby element, same gun, same chokes, same ammo. Does anyone have any ideas on why they shoot so different?
Get a mid bead put on by a gunsmith. Makes it easier to see if your not looking straight down the barrel. There is a plate inside the stock that changes the pitch from left to right
Or shoot right handed like a normal person
Another thing why are you hunting nasty ducks when you can be chukar hunting. And the lab is a better chukar dog
Is this in Nevada?
Dixie did an outstanding job marking, handling and retrieving the ducks! I agree with you about handling a boat without neutral or reverse in River current: it sucks.
As much as we struggle with good dog work in the field, I've never had a complaint with her and ducks. She never gets bored and she's always so cooperative with taking direction.
Dude, that's a great looking thumbnail.
Thanks man. I appreciate that
@@strugglinoutdoors I’m strugglin’ with a thumbnail myself right now! 😃 They aren’t easy…well done.
Does he regularly have those seizures
That's only the second time he's ever had 1. I think he's been close a dozen more times but I was able to catch the early warning signs. Now he gets a twinkie or sweedish fish every couple hours when we are out
I wonder of cbd oil will help. I think i used to see them at local pet stores but they were low grade. As long as you use a squirt injector it may be safe during an episode so you dont get bit. I never had a dog do this but a cat that was 19 did and my brothers and I felt helpless as he had an episode after another. We watched a movie while it was happening so we were petting him here and there. He finally passed on with his last twitch but I just wished there were more ways to comfort them
My dog has had seizures before and the one thing that helps her is when I pick her up and put her in my lap while talking to her at the same time even tho she is pretty big.
My dog has Non-convulsive seizure so he gets real stiff and shakes a little but he still there, he'll walk over to us for comfort when it happens. If he ever started doing what this pup is it would be alot more scary
Beautiful dog
