Ilona Maher Dances to 2nd, Australia Dominates Dubai 7s, Netherlands Triumphs | WRR 182
Welcome to Women’s Rugby Rundown 182 for November 25-December 1. Ilona Maher made history as the runner-up on Dancing with the Stars and hinted at joining the PWR, potentially becoming the highest-profile American in the league. Australia opened the 2024-25 HSBC SVNS with a dominant performance at the Dubai 7s, while the Cape Town Wild Dogs and Honey Badgers women solidified their Rugby Tens dominance. The Netherlands secured a win in the first of two matches against Brazil. Meanwhile, the suspension of Papua New Guinea Rugby Union by Oceania Rugby and the PNG Olympic Committee raises critical questions about the future of their teams, and the Latin Cup has been canceled following the end of World Rugby funding. And we round up all the global Premier and Club competitions worldwide.

Nice commentary ❤❤❤❤❤
🎉🎉 Wendy..thank you for all you do👍
Wow!
She moved across the pond! Up the Bears!
I can see you mouth moving but have no idea what you said. Glad to hear both bits of news about Ilona's exploits.
Haha. It's a split screen from our WRR 182 video. We said Bristol first because that's who we thought she'd go with!
Leaving? I'm not leaving but then, I never went. I will admit that by watching 'news' it was brought to me a few times.
You go girl!
Congratulations Mexico. Looks like the match was fun. Everything is more fun when there is mud.
It really does seem like rugby is growing globally, and mud definitely adds to the excitement!
CORRECTION: Only Mexico has qualified for the 2025 World Rugby Challenger Series. Jamaican MEN have also qualified.

The HEAD of the WRU is a woman. The buck stops with her. You obviously know NOTHING about rugby.
I'd love to see Union & League take off in the U.S....they piss all over American Football & that's why other countries laugh at it
Tried out a new mic this week, but it needs a few more tweaks-sorry for the muffled audio!
Brilliant tournament, Womens’ rugby will see massive growth in next few years - the Olympic 7s is a real catalyst. 👍
I'd like to see the 2026 WXV1 held in Europe. Consecutive Saturdays in France, Ireland and England, triple headers in front of big crowds
Yes, it really seems like WXV needs to be in established markets for a bit. Maybe one of the tiers is in an emerging one...would love to see how Madagascar would support! Some of their local matches have had 20k show up!
SIMPLE : WHATS THE USA LINEUP. WHERES SPIFF ?
Woud have loved to see Spiff on the USA roster but doesn't look like it was meant to be. However there are five (really six if you count Nani) USA Sevens players included in the traveling roster: eagles.rugby/news/usa-womens-eagles-traveling-squad-announced-for-wxv-1-in-british-columbia-2024913. We should see the game day roster today or tomorrow.

Thanks for keeping us informed.

Ilona suggested on TikTok that she wanted to play in next years World Cup. Not sure how much XV's experience she has, but will be interesting to see where she signs on for the experience/preperation and what position she's going to play.
She has actually played some XVs, in college for Queens but then was picked up for 7s right away. I believe she has 1 or 2 caps with the Eagles XVs as well. So it's not as wild as we think, we are just used to seeing her in 7s. Can you imagine Kelter and Maher in the centers or Zachary and she as flankers???
@@YSCRugby Personally, I'd want Ilona at #8. At this point in time Ilona brings a lot more than her size, strength and skills to a side. She brings EYES. In the USA, eyes are what we need almost more than anything. I think that it would be near criminal neglect for the USARFU to ignore those eyes. If she is willing.
@@rittherugger160 Totally agree that adding her to the team would be a huge step forward for eyeballs on the sport. This is an Antoine Dupont moment and USAR can jump on it. The question is will they?
@@rittherugger160 At top level XV's, there are plenty of players with similar physical attributes, but far more experience of the relentless physical battering that comes with top level XVs. I agree she has huge potential, but it's not a given. It's going to take a lot of work. I suspect the PWR or France, give her the best chance of the right experience in a professional setting.
@@neill392 I understand that she won two XV National Championships under her belt. It's not like she's unaware of what playing XVs is like,
WOW WOW ❤SO KOOL
WOW WOW WOW, WOMENS RUGBY,MEAN AZ. ❤❤
They play like a bunch of girls
It's really weird to be a Springbok fan - we literally won two world cups, smashed Australia on the weekend, will probably put a dent in New Zealand as well, plus we have young talent coming through that is exceptionally scary. But then we look at our women's team and they are not nearly on the same page.
Great to know you and your associate are represented on the USA Rugby committee Wendy. Good to have knowledgeable and passionate women keeping the interest of women's rugby at the forefront of decisions. Most men are aware to allow women like urselves to make sure u get to decide and implement what your needs are going forward in expanding the game not only locally but nationally to gain ascendance in participation and with that comes business opportunities which will be a huge win for financial benefits from more sponsors. Good stuff to look forward to.
Appreciate this, we're doing our best to make sure there is continuity between Club, WPL and WER.
The England v France game is in Gloucester, not London, at the Kingsholm stadium,
Yes, you're correct. Appreciate the correction.
@@YSCRugby Hopefully "Queensholm" will be sold out.
Genuine question about your stance on this: In pursuit of an “anti-transphobic” agenda, is one to assume that you’d prefer to have biological males compete with biological females rather than be (mis)labeled as discriminatory? And if so, doesn’t that defeat the purpose of having a women’s category to begin with? ☮️
Thank you for your question. My stance is rooted in the belief that sports should be inclusive and fair for everyone. The issue is complex, but it's essential to remember that trans women are women. Allowing them to compete in women's sports doesn't defeat the purpose of the category; rather, it ensures that all women, regardless of their gender identity, have the opportunity to participate and compete. It’s important to approach this with compassion and understanding. Labeling trans women as "biological males" oversimplifies the issue and can contribute to harmful narratives.
@@YSCRugbyI suppose the concern with that would be: at what point is nuance to be discussed? With all due respect, putting up a wall of complexity seems not only exclusionary, but moreover dismissive of rationality.
@@nastiestNate Thank you for engaging in this important conversation. I appreciate your perspective and understand the complexities involved. As allies, we aim to support inclusion and fairness in sports, but we're not experts on every aspect of this issue. I encourage you to read this article, which provides valuable insights into the broader context of these discussions: economictimes.indiatimes.com/opinion/et-commentary/imane-khelifs-experience-in-paris-echoes-dutee-chands-fight-against-global-gender-panic/articleshow/112269896.cms?from=mdr. It offers a perspective that might add to our understanding of the challenges faced by athletes navigating these complex situations.
Trans women are not women. They have a Y chromosome. Just out of interest. Do you consider Lia Thomas the swimmer to be a woman?
@@roberttelford745 Lia is a woman.
Awesome 2024 Olympics for all womens sports and especially USA being recognised in Rugby 7s. Both Canada and USA women claiming there first Olympic finals and were deservered of their Olympic medal achievements when womens rugby in general. It's also great that the US got a very welcomed donation of $4,0000,000 from Mrs Kang who owns womens soccer teams, as recognition of the US womens medal achievement and it's extremely wonderfulto be appreciated for the dedication to 7s rugby and for the people in the US to see there team on the world stage being an unknown sport in America. But that hasall changed. They out viewed all other US participated sports by well over 500,000+ that watched there finals and had more likes of 80,000+ and has grown enthusiasm with new young girls who had never knew rugby especially womens rugby 7s eve existed. More women playing rugby will only get attention from major sponsors in the US. Majority of these women still hold down jobs and have to pay for or are lucky enough to have family supprt as well as community donations to play the game they have a huge passion for. Love from NZ and bring on 2028. Kia Kaha Wahine Mana😛!
I apologise in advance but why are u so frickin cute
Love the sport!
South african rugby fan here. So happy for them to win that medal. Its a massive win that will inspire so many young people and help grow the game in the states.
Huge win for America. This along with Ilona Maher, Alex Spiff and all the Eagles are going to grow rugby here more than could be imagined.
Y'all women r getting the love. About time. And we in NZ love y'all!!!
The Black Ferns (doesn't matter what format) are just more exciting to watch than the over-rated All Blacks.
NEW ZEALAND won the world cup and Olympic Gold whereas NZ rugby men won silver medal in world cup and out of medal in Paris Olympic Rugby game.😂
Why do I feel weird, as an American male, to celebrate our Women in their achievements…here now, for our Rugby gals, and in World Cups past…but for not the overwhelming Lesbian presence?
@@dizzykincade7831 you almost made it before showing your bigotry or homophobia. Do better.
@@YSCRugby it’s a statement that is an obvious fact. I find it interesting the lesbian community is very apparent in women’s sports, but the gay community isn’t nearly as prevalent in men’s sports
Helped it being in France. They are clearly the number one rugby nation when it comes to fan numbers
For sure, always a good crowd in France. Can't wait for the 2025 Rugby World Cup...perhaps they need an even bigger stadium for the final?
The dog is trying to figure out what is going on and how he should respond!😂😂😂 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Now I know y'all are deadset passionate supporters and as a Kiwi, we're all happy for y'all. USA women deserve the respect and adulation all over the rugby world and sports heroines.
The dogs like what's wrong with the humans!
Such a big win!! Go USA!
Shelly the GOAT🎉🎉🎉🎉
Greedy govt.
Awesome 👍. Well done Canada 👏😂😂😂
The decison to not have a WXV in 2027 because the England team have a Tour in NZ is totally outrageous. World Rugby can't tell everywhere and everyone that they want women's rugby to grow at a global level and at the same time cancelling a tournament because one of the teams has another agenda. I really hope that World Rugby come to their senses and tell England that if they can't be there in 2027 they'll take another team to replace them!
Agree or send whatever England team is left! They’ll still be great with as much depth as they have.
Also on April 20, France U20 has hammered England U20 74-0 it was the biggest defeat for any England women's team (See article on ScrumQueens )
The U20 tournament has been fascinating. France is looking strong...
Yessss 🤩
You can convince them to do anything, especially in a group. It's funny but sad smh.
No freemartin here only castrato

Hey quick questions. Whatever happened to the usa women's u19 and u18 teams? I remember they used to play in European tournaments. Are they still doing so? Also, do they have any women youth teams playing in international tournaments this yr?
They do exist but generally play under the banner of All Americans these days. You can find them on social media under 'USARJNT'. The Rugby Breakdown just did a few articles on the JNT's: therugbybreakdown.com/usa-rugby-calendar-summer-2023/ and therugbybreakdown.com/falcons-introduce-fresh-faces-to-usa-jersey/.
@Wendy Young Ahhh play thx. Do u kno why they don't play in the youth rugby Europe tournaments anymore?
@@mofreeman1 Lots of programs saw less funding, support and organization after the bankruptcy of USAR. These programs seem to be seeing a revival now!
