You need to create a grid across the entire orchard! It’s that simple, sure it will cost you a lot of money! But consider it an investment, over time it would save you hundreds of hours! I could bust this problem in no time! I’ve also got experience with Gpigs! You are on a tipping point! 100 will become 3000 in a year!! I had my baby gp’s sexed by a vet! They got it wrong! We ended up having 21 gpigs! Females are receptive as soon as the babies are born!

all the fussing about daily. as a professional i would use a wide tiller and turn soil over so mowing was nit needed and prevents diesease. areating soil encourges root growth an health. ur organic apprach is commendable but not efficient and sustainable enconomics. 😅 you would only have to til for a couple hours once month at most. 😊

Definitely, exclude the blueberry bushes, build a perimeter fence thats guinea pig proff, make sections in your patch with a common central area. Just open up the sections you want with the guineas going back to the central area each night to sleep.

Just a thought…. Why do you not place the black tube at the other end of the pen, so when you move and pull the pen, you’re not pulling the weight of the Guinea pigs or the tube? Then when the black tube is at the other end you move it back to the opposite end so it’s ready to go next move

I spent a vacation on a farm that had a large anti-aviary, with Guinea pigs and peacocks around all the fruit trees. It had lots of pvc pipes everywhere for the piggies- great mowers!! and to control the population they had a couple of pipes that exited into the surrounding paddock for the local eagles etc to find…. If you can find a way to protect your piggies from predator birds then why not enclose your entire orchard and let the piggies free roam?

It’s so exciting to see the research and development stages. I’m proud of you for not giving up! Also, I’m no expert at guinea pig husbandry but the all look fit and healthy. The only thing I’d say is to research the teeth growth and see if some antlers might help them wear the teeth naturally. I had a squirrel and those growing teeth needed deer antler to chew on to help with calcium and with putting natural wear on the teeth. I’m so invested in how this works out. It’s a perfect system in that the grazing helps mow and the poo adds nutrients to the soil.

Put an iron bar on top of one wood block to the other, parallel to the black tubing, to add some weight to the bottom end of the tube and keep it from rolling.

We used to have free range around our stables, they were brilliant at keeping the yard and they clean up any dropped feed, the bonus was that rats and mice don’t like Guinea pigs so we didn’t have issues with rats and mice, the Guinea pigs kept out of the way of the horses and the horses didn’t seem to mind them

They seem to be in the housing most of the time you move the crate. What if you have an enclosure with a door you can shut to contain them while you move it? Then them escaping or being under foot is eliminated and you can be faster moving and setting it up, then upen the door.

Get 2 inch pvc 2 feet longer than you cage. Cut a slice down the lebgth of it . Slide the wire cage edge into the pvc . Use the pvc to slide across the yard the foot over hang past the cage use heat gun to turn up edge

I don't know if you will see this comment and I don't know if my comment will be useful to you. But I was thinking about building two cages that connect to each other via a hatch or small door. One cage could hold the guinea pigs while the second cage is placed where you would like the Guinea pigs to go. When the guinea pigs has grazed and traveled to the second cage via the hatch, the hatch can be closed and the first cage can be packed up quickly and moved to it's next destination and be ready to for the guinea pigs after they finished grazing in the second cage.

The simplest solution is the best - move the hut, move the whole pen, job done! If you wanted bigger pens with irregular shapes and more GPs, adding and subtracting walls connected with gudgeons and pins, or clips, can quickly change the geometry of the pen without dragging anything or using cable ties.

I'm going to have to add to all these other suggestions. Build a pen with ground spikes at the end of each row. Then build another pen with ground spikes right next to those. Put a door in the middle of each end of each pen. Pick the house up toss it to the other side herd the pigs and close the doors. Move the empty pen to the other side. Those pipes and covers could be used to create short doorways between each pen just keep the covers on the ends until it is time to herd them. Then when you pick up the house they will naturally run to the tube to hide. If you cut the bottoms out of the tubes so they sit flush they also will not gather poop. With this setup you could make the cages rigid so instead of slowly dragging them you can just pick them up and walk them to the next position. Ground stakes mean no escapes. And the tunnel means low effort in herding them from one cage to the next.

Try extended poles one each corner, and a ‘handle pole on each long side, corner to corner, at a comfortable height. One person on each side could easily take turns, moving forward, to walk the crate low to the ground, the length of the cropped ground

Just a recommendation, but if you're still pulling the tube with the cage, why haven't you considered something like those hooks that screw into the wall or ceiling? Gap/hook pointed down so when you pull that side of the tube up/towards you the hook should swivel with the pipes grip on the mesh. Also considering the manure buildup have you considered having an optional version of the pipe, for when you're not winterizing for the guinea pigs, that's cut flat on one side with a mesh which when it's in grazing mode is the 'floor' of the pipe, but when you lift and drag the pen it's the 'side' not facing the ground? It could leave most of the manure behind when you move them. You may have way less cleaning to do for the pipes when you're not wintering them if you do that. Plus it helps maximize grazing coverage in the setup unlike the current pipe setup.

It seems like it would be a good idea to have at least 2 pens and provide a way for the pigs to move themselves to the next pen. Lure them with treats or something.

What do you see? The tube roles forward. How to prevent it? Support in the drag direction. ;) How about skids with also properly carved angle in the front, that it easily moves through grass and also bumps. An additional idea: add ropes from the front of those skids up to the front from where you are pulling. That way there would be an equal force distribution to the back - pulling the tube and fense in parallel with the front. In case you could need any further inspiration, I would be glad to help. :)

Also, you do not have to supplement with vitamin C if you give vitamin C enriched foods like peppers .. spinach, greens... but some veg needs to be in moderation so they dint get bloat ..pea flakes are great too... but 80% of their diet needs to be hay for digestion and teeth!!

You know guinea pigs are prone to die or get very ill in cold weather and drafts... your set up won't be warm enough in the winter.. I have had guinea pigs most of my life.. so I do know a lot about their needs. and in the last 15 years rescued them.. they live in a walk in run with a heated house with a catflap for access..so I don't think your set up is at all adequate... my guinea pigs often live to 7, 8 or even 9 years in good health.. I doubt your guinea pigs will sadly.. plus inbreeding is a huge issue too!! And you dont put wet wood chip in for bedding not only is it bad for them its wet... they will end up in respiratory issues...or fungal issues.. they need hay to keep warm in, dry and eat..... this is awful and I worry for the welfare of these guineapigs tbh!!

It might feel discouraging and frustrating but it was still a valuable experience even if it wasn't what you expected. You might be able to use the physics of this experiment in another way. It also underpins the idea of Occam's razor. Simple is usually the best solution. Ngl though i really don't see how loose guinea pigs in the blueberry field is an issue. Fence in the whole field, provide plenty of places for them to hide and have a livestock guardian dog or two. Even if they get ahold of a few berries it won't comprise the whole crop.

I am so thoroughly confused here. why are you doing this? Is it your intent to raise guinea pigs to sell to pet shops, etc. or are you simply trying to have them mow your lawn? Are you too poor to buy a lawnmower? Or are you just game to take a crazy idea and prove you can do it merely for that fact alone....

I agree with the idea of a large fenced-in area for the blue berries/guinea pigs Also, the old pen test was probably also faster due to the fact you didn't have to make a turn like on the tube design. If you do keep the mobile pen design, perhaps swap the houses for when you do corners as it seems to be easier/quicker for you than the old mobile design
