    I recently bought a Sony a850 full frame body with a Konica/ Minolta 17 - 35 lens for £500 . Both camrea and lens in very good condition. I had been thinking about it for some time, as I already owned a 50mm f1.7 , Tokina 28 - 70 atx f2.8 , Sigme 70 - 210 apo f2.8 and various accessories. My old Dynax camera bodies all fell apart and died a sticky rubbery mess.

    I have the 50mm prime, 35 -105mm (love to use it for macro) and the 70 - 210mm. I used them on my a57 aps-c camera, soon going to full frame and sure going to keep using them..

    I am a Minoltist since 1990. I have bought most of Minolta's best lenses and six or seven years ago I finally went digital with the a99. To this body iI added the CZ 16-35 f2.8 and the CZ 135 1.8 T* Sal. All these Minolta and CZ lenses work fantastically well on the very capable a99 (24mp really is more than enough). To all younger aspiring photographers: you can save A LOT of money by buying A mount lenses that will make pictures indistinguishable in quality from the best and often ridiculously expensive F mount lenses. I will die holding an a mount in my hands...long live the a mount.

    I have the 50mm and 100-200 mm MINOLTA AF lenses adapted to my Canon EFS (Canon 800D body) mount but unfortunatelly i can't use all the aperture range, the 50mm f range is from 1.4 to 4 only. Both lenses are manually focused of course. Generally good DOF , they're nice toys, but not as sharp as modern lenses.

      Well currently the la-ea 5 adapter is only suported by the newest bodys of sony (so the 6500 en a1) if i remember correctly. So to be honest the best choice you have got is the la-ea 4 or if you don't think of going to full frame the la-ea2.

    The 100mm F2.8 is the star of the minolta's, Ken Rockwell has a review, basically distortion so low he couldn't measure it, and razor sharp at all focal distances, I took a picture of a fly and you could clearly see the grid pattern on its eye. I want the 20mm one next.

    Great video Graham, The majority of my lenses apart from three of them, are Minolta. I use these lens on a couple of Sony A mount cameras that I have got. They are of great construction, very well built. I love the contrast and bokeh that can be achieved from them. One of my favourites is the Minolta 500mm f8 mirror lens. I absolutely love this lens. How does the auto focus system perform with these lenses. Is it fast, slow, what auto focus modes will work and how well do they work.

    • @fauxaccount6233
      @fauxaccount6233 3 роки тому

      Autofocus is average, the system itself is very fast to focus because it uses phase detection autofocus but it's limited in old Minolta lenses because they don't have a built in focus motor, they use a screw drive motor on the adapter to focus. You will have to work with the focus point of the adaptor, I think it has something like 20 focus point and you can choose point, center, zone and wide focus mode. Recently Sony launched La ea5 adapter that is much faster and allows you to use the native focus points on your camera but at the moment there are only two compatible cameras.

    1/10/2021 Own a Sony SLT a-55 with the "A" mount was happy to see that the Minolta AF line of film lenses from the 80-90s still useable without the high cost of Sony lenses of the same mm. Like you, I have purchased off E-bay almost new Minolta Maxim lenses dirt cheap with shipping along with some of the Minolta Maxim film cameras with prime/ macro and zoom lenses. All that autofocus and take great photos covering the mm range from wide, normal and telephoto. I did get a Sony Kit zoom and do find that it does slightly lock into focus faster than the Minolta Maxim lenses. For the average photographer not chasing the latest and greatest you can have it all at a price that won't break the bank.

    Another odd duck is the Minolta AF 500mm F8 Reflex. Yes, a mirrorlens with autofocus. No other camera system has this. 500mm focal length in a compact and lightweight package: only 665 grams. It has its limitations: you can only use the center autofocus point (but hey, at least it has autofocus), it is fixed at F8 and the background blur can be pretty horrific sometimes. But is is fun to use and a 500mm you actually put in your bag often, because it is very travel friendly.

    ..aperture..can't see ..very sharp lens..;-) hahaha. I have all lenses you showing and all are really interesting, especially for the money but newer lenses gives you a way better image ofc for way bigger money. And 17-35 is crap in terms of microcontrast and sharpness away from center, which is only sharp. 28-85 just good, 100-300 average, 70-210 beercan very good but with a lot of abberations. Try any f2.8 or lower lenses from minolta and you will not be disappointed (except af 24mm f2.8...).

      The Konica Minolta AF 17-35 f2.8-4 is an excellent lens, I do not share your opinion about microcontrast and that it is only sharp in the center, or you had a very bad copy or you do not know how to use it. I have used it since 2005 with a Dynax 7D, then with a Sony A-700, A-900 and now with a Sony A-7RIII and many times I get better results than with my Zeiss 16-35 F4 E-mount. From a 6 Mp APS_C CCD to a 42 Mp fullframe sensor that lens incredibly continues to give me very good results, the same did not happen to me with the Konica Minolta AF 28-70 F2.8 that already with the A-900 showed resolution problems.

    I got it last year for less than 500 euros and it rocks. It one of the best cameras out there. The only thing is really profesianol camera so it means more weight and size. It's so fast that you can truck almost everything. A friend of mine with a panasonic G85/ IBIS make a night shoting comparison with his camera and the D700. It's amazing how the D700 can shoot even in the dark night situation. The panasonic even with IBIS started to saw it's limits of the small sensor.

    I love my D700's. They do everything I need a stills camera to do, and nothing I don't. As an old-time film photographer, I tend to compose in the camera while shooting, so the higher megapixel Nikons I have owned haven't really provided anything to me that I need for general photography since I don't crop a lot. I have zero interest in video using a DSLR and don't print bigger than 20x30 inches, so the D700 is just fine for me. I too leave the 24-85 VR on a D700 camera as a "walk around" lens, but am just as likely to use a nice prime lens when I know what I'll be shooting. I also have three older pro-level Nikon 2.8 zooms that seem right at home on the D700. I recently thought to "upgrade" my resolution a bit and bought a like-new D600 with a replaced shutter. It made nice images, but the autofocus was nowhere near in the same league as my D700, and the camera's frame rate was slower than the D700 with the battery grip. I noticed a negligible difference at very high ISO's in favor of the D600, not enough to matter to me. Although the D600 did some cool things, I didn't get the same joy from using it. So I sold it to a budding new photographer to get him started and bought a second D700 body. Just my two cents worth.
