If done correctly, yes they can be soaked safely, but in many common cases such as trying to remove stuck shed skin it is unnecessary to soak the animal. In this video we go over when is and isn't a good idea to soak, and how to safely soak the animal when needed. #emeraldtreeboa #greentreepython #emerald #tree #boa #green #tree #pyth...

      I don't know how she lost it, but I would guess she probably arrived into the country with it already missing and likely an injury sustained in the wild or during capture, stub tails are fairly common with the imports. She was an old snake, the previous owner had her for over 15 years and she was already a full grown adult when he originally bought her at a pet store, so she was almost certainly wild caught.

      @@st-a-y It sounds like she's a little bit stunted in growth, but probably not a major problem. If you got her as true captive bred from a breeder, she might have been one of those babies that takes a long time to establish and begin to feed regularly, babies like that don't grow as fast as others that start off feeding regularly shortly after birth. Often times with a snake like this, it can catch up to the others in size if you start to feed it just a little more frequently and/or slightly bigger meals than whatever you've been feeding currently. • @snakespirit2651
      @snakespirit2651 Місяць тому

      Yes, as long as humidity is kept high enough and they have access to clean fresh water they can find easily at all times they will do well, the parameters are what is important. Keeping over water is a very straightforward and consistent method of achieving those conditions.

    Not sure if you will see this comment but I have a question and am curious, I see a lot of breeders of Chondro and Emerald putting neos directly on the water some till yearlings or subadults as well but why am I It seems that I have never seen anyone put an adult on the water? Isn’t this a good way to keep humidity? Adults don’t poop as frequently as babies, so they don’t have to worry too much about drinking dirty water. Wouldn’t this also save the use of paper towers or puppypads? I have thought about whether it is inconvenient to put water directly into the cage. Is it possible to customize a drawer-like function that can be directly pulled out for cleaning😮?

    • @snakespirit2651
      @snakespirit2651 Місяць тому

      I think the primary reason you don't see it for adults as often is just the challenge of a cage design that would work well for cleaning. With tubs with rounded bottom corners, cleaning is much easier than with a larger cage with a drawer that is not a single moulded piece, so keeping it both water tight and clean is a challenge. Also the size makes it a bit precarious to pull out a large drawer full of soiled water. It can be done though, and something I will probably try at some point with adults. Mike Stefani of Mike's Monitors keeps a few adult emeralds in really cool cages he builds himself and they have a tub of water in the bottom with a filter. He said he fishes out the turds with a net and the filter handles the rest. It seems to be working great for him.

      @@snakespirit2651 I think that when they are in the wild, they will be found on the branches of rivers (no matter what season it is), especially in the rainy season. Heavy rains will cause the water level to rise, and many forests will directly turn into swamps, where there is high humidity, high temperature and high ventilation, so basically Wild adults should stay above water quite often, so there should be no problem for adults in captivity to use water (I mean shallow water not very deep water, I know some people say they will drown) I have seen some breeders There is a similar setup with a large water bowl at the bottom of the cage. I’m assuming that maybe using water directly instead of artificial substrates like paper towels and puppy pads might be more efficient and natural? I don't know. I really like your setup on natural light and ambient temperature. Although I don't keep emerald, I love this species and I'm still doing my homework and research.

    It is a LAZY way to do it. It is also not sanitary to keep them over water. Bacteria breeding ground. Give them the proper bedding, clean water bowl, and obviously the proper cage furnishing. I have kept and bred both species for 20 years, and never kept them over water. This is a lazy way to do it, period. I was fortunate enough to meet Greg Maxwell, Trooper Walsh, and Rico Walder, and these guys all helped me out. None of these guys do it like that…Trooper did some testing with this I believe, when they first came into the hobby…but quickly decided against it. Use the right bedding, and mist them…period. Every one of my animals will drink out of a bowl, so that excuse is crap. They do also drink from droplets on cage furnishings and walls. If you do it right, they do not ‘literally dry out’. Don’t be lazy, period. These snakes are not for people who want to do things easy….

    Nice video, I think all keepers should move towards utilising full spectrum light for emeralds and chondros. A couple of thoughts: 1. Glass and certain plastics block some wavelengths of light, namely in the ultraviolet range. 2. It would be interesting to use a solar power meter e.g. the RS pro ISM400 to gain some solar power density readings when they are basking, and cross reference these readings to data from their natural habitat that can be found on the website global solar atlas. 3. Keepers that do not have the luxury of outdoor keeping due to the climate they live in can and in my opinion definitely should be implementing full spectrum light to replicate the sun in their indoor enclosures. This can be done by using a combination of lights, typically an incandescent/halogen bulb, T5 UV tube and LED/metal halide to produce a close to natural spectrum. The light of course needs to be provided in measured amounts however.

    • @snakespirit2651
      @snakespirit2651 3 місяці тому

      Glad you enjoyed the video! On your first point, that is one of the things I find interesting about the basking behavior of my females in these setups, that they readily utilize that sunlight despite it being filtered through both the window and the glass, acrylic, or polycarbonate walls of their enclosures. Also, although this sample size is not huge of course so it could just be a fluke, but the female in the video that was on the left in the large Sterilite tub had a pretty poor outcome litter compared to the others that have gestated in acrylic and polycarbonate tubs in the exact same area, and I've wondered if it might have been because of the difference in plastic in the Sterilite tub vs. acrylic, polycarbonate or glass enclosures. This year any gravid females kept in that room will be in acrylic, polycarbonate or glass enclosures.

    • @Chondropython7812
      @Chondropython7812 3 місяці тому

      That is a useful observation👍 the reason for this is reptiles are drawn to bask by the quality of the visible light in their environment, regardless of UV and infrared content. This has been demonstrated in studies by the likes of Roman Muryn using diurnal basking lizards and different combinations of lights. It is worth remembering that sunlight delivers UV, visible light and infrared as one package, so animals cannot pick and choose which wavelengths they bask in and haven’t evolved to do so.

    • @Chondropython7812
      @Chondropython7812 3 місяці тому

    Sempre bom oferecer os galhos do setup no mínimo 6x mais largo que os originais, para que o descanso da matriz seja mais confortável, aqui no Brasil observamos que estes animais quando ovulando preferem descansar sob troncos mais grossos e velhos, animal está lindo mano!❤❤❤

      Observação interessante! Isso é para fêmeas selvagens que ovulam ou em cativeiro? Além disso, as fêmeas permanecem em troncos e galhos mais baixos e mais grossos durante toda a gravidez ou apenas durante a ovulação? Peço desculpas por qualquer erro de tradução, usei o Google Translate do inglês para o português.

    I got a question you know how you can see the spine on the emerald tree boa? Is that okay or healthy for the animal I have the same exact snake and size. Looks just like in the video. You think its okay???

    • @snakespirit2651

      If the spine is protruding bad and the ribs are showing a lot, the snake must be really underweight and usually dehydrated as well. They are slender snakes by nature but their build is generally a little bulkier than say an Amazon Tree Boa or even a properly built green tree python.

    Serpente brasileira que foi comercializada de maneira ilegal para outros países, vergonha

      This snake is caninus not batesii, but it is possible she may have originally been imported from Brazil before the laws changed, she was a very old animal. The previous owner purchased her from a pet store sometime around 2003-2006 and the snake was already a 4-5 foot long adult at that time. He kept her for approximately 15 years and then sold her to me, she lived another 2 years with me but sadly died from liver cancer in 2022. I estimate she was probably 25-30 years old when she passed away. She was a very unique and beautiful emerald, have never seen another quite like her.

      @@snakespirit2651 , sua resposta é válida, porém, não muda forma de como essa e várias outras espécies sul-americanas são comercializadas no exterior, assim como a cobra-do-milho está começando a se tornar um problema aqui no 🇧🇷, por falta de fiscalização, onde vários de má fé, se aproveitam das leis brandas e políticas sujas Brasileiras... Mais, obrigado por responder, ao menos mostra que você se importa.

      I assume you mean 2025? I'll try to breed this with one of my anaconda phase at some point for sure, but I don't know if she'll be ready by 2025, probably would have better luck trying a year or two later but we'll see.
