Campground I went to as a kid in the late 90's and early 2000's still had one of these cabinets. I remember it being pretty true to the original but only having the 1st level.

Fun fact: there are also versions of Crazy Kong that run on Galaxian, Moon Cresta and Scramble hardware - as well as a Brazillian knockoff that's just called “Kong“

I adore the presentation of the DS version! I feel it's a bit of a shame that the Frontier mode doesn't have any interacions like Puyo Puyo but at least that makes it quicker to play through.

I am actually ASTONISHED that between mid-1981 and early 1982 so naby things did happen with nintendo. Including converted and original cabinets did hit the arcades, bootlegs of donkeykong did appear in arcades and even a licensed bootleg of donkeykong called crazy kong did appear in the arcades. Heck even a sequel of crazy kong did appear. And even a lawsuit from nintendo against falcon for overproducing cabinets of crazy kong and distributing them through different subsidaries to other countries and states, etc… etc… It blows my mind that that all happened within such short time, am mean holy fucking shit. But what’s also blows my mind is that once supermariobros came out, everything what went before it seems to be all forgotten. Most people think about the nes with supermariobros if they think about nintendo (including me), not donkeykong. Believe me without the internet i wouldn’t have know about all that shit that came before it.

Anybody think crazy kong is the reason Nintendo is so strict with copyright? Ever since Crazy kong, they weren’t gonna be copied or have their IP stolen again.

The BPS Famicom version of Tetris' controls were nasty as someone used to the GameBoy version.

Some levels you need to collect the angel in order to open the exit, but it still does not excuse how horribly difficult this game is.

Sega's other systems (before the Genesis) were successful but far too slowly: in Japan they suffered from poor launch titles and took a long time to catch on -a contrast to the PC Engine, that was massively successful in its first year and then fizzled out. And yes, BTW, I do blame Sega for making very poor strategic decisions

Good tip on the Stage 5 boss, I swear that mfs impossible with the base speed and twin shot, the final snowman immediately bumrushes you with snowballs that cannot be avoided at base speed.

I have a strong assumption that the games in Toybox were being developed as minigames in Superstar, but only "the best" made the cut to save on space (or whatever). But then instead of scrapping their work, they figured "why not advertise our game with these?" It just seems odd to imagine they did this just to release them on the Satellivew for fun, and the fact the minigames that actually made it into the game are also technically part of Toybox makes me feel I may be right.

I loved the G&W Gallery games as a kid, especially the GBA one. Also gave me appreciation for Mr. G&W in Smash Brothers. I also proudly bought the Mario and Zelda anniversary G&W handhelds they released a few years ago. Despite what some may say, they are the clearest and best handheld versions of the original Mario and Zelda games I ever played. I think the color and tint looks better then even the Virtual Console or Switch Online versions.

Quarth is one of my favorites. Also had an X68000 & PC98 version in Japan. Hamster also issued a standalone MAME-on-a-disc Oretachi Geisen Zoki version of Quarth for PS2, which was the precursor to Arcade Archives.

For Modern Helmet, there is a high risk/high reward system of a sort. If you keep collecting coins without going through the door, your character will start moving to a crawl making it harder to avoid the “wrath of Home Depot.”

I remember seeing Crazy Kong in Myrtle Beach around 1982 or 1983 while on family vacation. It was at a restaurant on the beach. I played it and it was almost the same as Donkey Kong.

Here's what I don't understand about this. Okay, Nintendo originally needed help making enough of these DK games to satisfy demands so they brought Falcon in. But Falcon's code is different in many ways. Yes, the sounds and the colors are way off, but if you look carefully the graphics themselves are not the same as the original either. My question is this: If Nintendo needed help producing DK games, why didn't they "lend" the actual game code and hardware stats to Falcon so they would be making the exact same game as Nintendo's original? As everyone who has played Crazy Kong knows, CK is significantly easier to play than DK and is a good game to practice on.

Fantasy Zone 2 W was THE GAME that made be a fan of the series, I've been collecting all the physical goods I could find, even purchasing a Sega Mark III for Galactic Protector. It's too bad that the best version of 2 DX is not easily available anymore, especially due to the closure of the eShop, that game is just perfection and they really need to push it onto the Switch for more people to experience it. I first came for Puyo Puyo on the go with 3D Classics Collection, but stayed for Opa-Opa. Something else too, there was a music box of Fantasy Zone, I think it came with the Album you've showcased, but that thing was so rare that I only saw it once, I was forced to buy the Album a second time to not miss on it.
