This was fantastic. I just got a PTZ and it truly helped me understand. One question. If say a camera is set to move between areas, say area A and B, and it’s focused on area A but there is motion or intrusion in area B. Will the camera miss the action in area B? I would think if it’s pointing at A it would miss everything in area B. Thanks again

Camera's onboard sd card, cabling (power and/or data cabling), recorder and internet connectivity are all possible attack vectors for the savvy organized burglar. But he will usually attack one vector only. So redundancy would make system more vandal proof for sure. Unfortunaly redundancy of any sort will come with extra costs which maybe ok for a commercial or high security area, but perhaps isa potential overkill as initial capex for residential setups.

Redundant stoarge by way of SD card and/or cloud storage and/or secondary NVR maybe a one way of defeating teh smart thief. By seconday NVR, I mean add same Ip camera to multiple NVRs or add one NVR to another (if NVR supports this). It may also be possible to backup NVR data locally on a NAS, etc. But before all this, it may help if you can make the NVR hard to get to like conceal it somewhere where its not possible to quickly figure out or at a height not easily accessible and so on.

Also one more suggestion is to carefully evaluate PoE switches that claim to support PoE for 150m, 250m or 300m either by default or extend mode toggle switch. Generally our experinece is that when this exted mode is enabled, the the link speed drops to 10 mbps and on that link if you test 65.5K ping packets (for eg. Hikvision Health Check feature in bulk Configuration tool), then 100% packets are lost. It sorts of implies that this feature is non-standard and possibly lossy. What e found that works better is to use a PoE extender every 100m to extend PoE (generally IP camera needs 6-10W) and PoE can supply around 13W to device for 100m cable length, which means we have some buffer to safely daisy chain 2 extenders and run PoE for 300m. This solution leads to a stable link that works at full speed of the master switch port.

Very good considerations. One very key requirement enabler for Ptz cameras is the need to do active live monitoring of subjects in a large area from a common place. This will reduce the deployment quantity and cost of human manpower (guards). And as you noted almost always these cameras will need to be mounted at a taller height than regular fixed or varifocal cameras. IMPO one should plan one ptz camera for many general purpose fixed focus security cameras.

For a small area coverage like individual home/villa, small shop or establishment AND your quality requirements are not very high (like jewellery store), then analog will fit the need. Once your coverage area is big, the cabling of analog becomes a pain as well as quality drops as you said and you should stick to IP cameras. Small coverage, small camera unit and modest quality requirement should also force you to consider wifi cameras which are easy to setup (offen DIY), inexpensive and simple (no nvr, monitor required). In fact I feel in most analog deployment scenarios, wifi cameras will do an equally good or even better job than analog cameras.

Placing cameras at high heights is a maintenance nightmare also.

We have used flat traveller cat6 utp cable for our apartment complex for 60 elevators. And those are working reliably since 4.5 years with not even 1 breakdown case. Shielded or unshielded is not an issue imo, but rather quality of cable, how it’s tied to the existing traveller, whether it’s free of joints, how it’s crimped etc. the cable should be having stranded conductors and the connector should support stranded cable, be free from mechanical stresses and so on,

The ideal switch for cctv camera wen using beyond 10 ports is a 10/100 fast ethernet switch with gigabit uplink, while below 10 cameras a 10/100 switch might just be good enough and won’t get overwhelmed on the uplink by the combined bandwidth need of connected cameras. IMPO a full gigabit switch might be wasteful in terms of cost as typical contemporary PoE IP cameras using h.265+ codec use no more than 1 Mbps bandwidth per megapixel resolution on an average.

I am planning to install CCTV cameras.my camera requirements are Outdoor, Ap hotspot range of 25 to 40 ft basically class 2 WiFi Viewing range 50ft Night vision Should record on SD card without internet Should record on SD card even if problems in WiFi Should be able to store recording on external storage connected to laptop to which cameras are connected Preferably ptz with presets and patrol setup that is can be set to auto rotation Please let me know if you know of anything that fulfills above requirements.
