Stick vs Auto - Real World Test! Back to Back C4 vs 5-Speed. Same car. With Dyno Results

One of the biggest questions we’ve ever gotten: Which is quicker, stick or auto? Conventional wisdom is, under the same circumstances - weather & traction - with an experienced driver, the stick is always quicker & faster. When we finally had the chance to test both in our own car we did it. And we were partly surprised by the results. But that’s the subject of a future video. 5 & 6-Speed Trans...

Ford Racing X303 Not the best choice for that combo It was an experiment
My 85 GT was a 5-speed, had 4.10 gears and I installed a performer intake(the stock intake has those tiny ports) and dual flowmasters. I wish I still had that car.
We all have one, or many, cars that got away!
Cool ram air setup
I have a CFI 85 cougar 5.0 I am putting some better parts in it used stuff mostly i am going with E7 heads and ditching the E5 with a 122.00 dollar weiend copy 4bbl intake summit cam ßhorty headers xpipe AJE kmember and a 600 holley poeting theE7 heads doingthis on a budget
Weight reduction is your friend More rear gear will help get the mass moving & is still drivable thanks to overdrive. Enjoy it!
Heck yeah!
With a better converter I’ll bet you would’ve run faster….
Put a 6R80 in it and go elevens 😉
I wonder what kind of converter did the C4 had?
8” 4800 stall from Trans Specialties
@@stickmansgarage9452 could you daily drive it with that stall & the C4?
@@Mawee-sn5su You COULD, probably shorter distances, but with the heat it would generate - and the general inefficiency (mpg) - I wouldn’t recommend it to commute to work

Thanks for the review , drag boat racer ( index ) very helfpul
Thanks for watching!
I really enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Seems like a lit of time spent tuning the car and replacing stuff and re ruining it with the manual as opposed to the C4. Seems very heavily biased towards the manual. Maybe just the way the video was edited?
The only changes besides the trans swap were the shock settings. Soft for C4, stiff for 5-speed, because that’s what allows each combo to run to it’s full capacity. We drive it hard in any combo in search of max ET. 💪 That’s what we are comparing here. And making observations on living with each in the real world. A lot of tuning & testing over a 25 year period helps us develop a log book & extract every ounce out of what little we’ve got 👍
Were you offroading your mustang in this video ?? Good lord, looked like you were driving through a dried up creek bed 🤣
Solid race suspension. “Well maintained” local roads. Results: Rattled brain, eyes & internal organs
LMAO!!!!
I’ve been preaching the “simple” is more approach for years to my son for years! He won’t listen. You provide an excellent lesson to your viewers, THNK YOU. Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Stock from the factory a stick shift always beats a auto . The new cars are different but I will always take stick shift over junk auto
Love to see this comparison again just with at 6R80 box instead of C4. I am thinking of ditching my TKO600 and going that route , and my best 60ft with TKO is 1.47 with 11.12 at 126mph.
hi awesome video, I have 86 Mustang with a aod transmission, it has a 351w built everything works really well but the transmission shift points, when I shift from first to 2nd it almost automatically shifts when I'm in 2nd to 3rd and feels like it kinda drags, do u know what I can do to get the have 2nd to 3rd rev out longer so I can use it's full potential?
Have you tried putting the shifter back into first as soon as you make the 1-2 shift? After that when you are ready to make the 2-3 shift you just put it into drive to achieve the 2-3 shift. Or maybe the TV cable needs adjusting?????
An AOD transmission shift points can by adjusted by the kick down cable.
I have an 84 vert with a 5 speed and an 89 GT with an AOD. Both were purchased as AOD cars. I converted the 84 to a 5 speed. I gotta tell you that my 89 with 3k stall converter will really get it. To match the performance of the AOD with the manual, I have to be really hard on the clutch, trans, etc. An AOD with a stall (And good tires) is a force to be reckoned with from a dig.
Dude my 91SSP notch all steel full interior zero weight working A/C zero weight reduction with 3/4 tank of fuel only weighs 3036lbs all power windows door locks power mirrors power seat. Woth stock pony wheels. Weighed on long acre racecar scales
Do u guys have a instigram?
I do @black88coupe
Auto will always be faster and more consistent
Hey would u mind sharing were he got the stall from thanks
How hard does she ride? seems like a lot. I guess you need that to run 12s.
The ride isn’t necessarily stiff. In fact, the front/ rear springs aren’t super stiff like some aftermarket lowering springs would be. The suspension is fairly compliant as the rear control arms have heim joints on them which really help them to articulate. The front arms have urethane bushings. It handles pretty well since the front to rear weight bias is VERY close to 50/50 so the car isn’t nose heavy even with the E7 iron heads. However with all that said it’s very noisy since almost all of the suspension is solid joints. As long as you take it slow over rail road tracks and try to avoid pot holes the ride is really pretty good for what it is. Hope this answers your questions.👍
You don’t need all that stuff to run 12’s. If you have a 5 speed and are good with a stick then you should be able to duplicate my times (12.68) fairly easily. Remember mine has an AOD which puts me at a disadvantage compared to a stick. When I started this build I have much quicker ET’s in mind therefore I went hardcore on some stuff. My goal at some point is low 10’s or maybe even faster. Therefore, I stepped up to all the good stuff sooner than later.
keep it simple stupid is what i say
That can really be the best way.
very cool
Thanks
How's it going stick man wondering if you've got any more videos in the works love the content 🍻👍🇦🇺
Yes we do. Sorry for the slow response. Didn’t see your message.
I hope all is well, Stickman.
I see ur mustang at the drags
Say hello next time.
Might also considering drilling a hole for a cotter pin instead of locktight
Honestly, if there were more material, yeah. But ironically, in this case we’re more comfortable NOT drilling
Should we be worried about the fact that we kinda retempered the bolt?
Nah. It’s hardcore we admit. And wouldn’t ever suggest it for a daily driven car. But it’s held torque. We don’t just try radical stuff and wing it. We watch out for ourselves
What stall and what rear gears ???
4200 & 4.30
@@stickmansgarage9452 thanks
My first "sports" style car was a little 90's Saturn which had almost no aftermarket and it was fun jerry rigging things to work and also felt good to drive sometime different and was usually underestimated cause most kids had hopped up civics. I bought my first stick car without ever haven driven stick and taught myself on the way home lol I finally got a 90 Mustang GT 5spd a few years later and still have it to this day, it had a NA 347 and is a fun street car.
I putting this combination in a 63 fairlane wagon. 1989 5.0 with AOD. Intake and 4100 carb. Call me stupid but I'm wanting a cruiser / daily. Give me some pointers......tell UTG hello
Start with a quality shift kit in the AOD. Trans-Go makes a nice kit. With the O/D you can get away with a little more rear gear. 1st gear in the AOD’s are horrible. Maybe a small stall converter too if you want. Call me paranoid but I always run a big trans cooler and plumb it separate from the radiator.
Listen to Agent AOD He knows from what he speaks Sounds like a cool cruiser We love wagons here
“It’s stock!” Yet he bought it off Craigslist and doesn’t know the history? WTF?
It’s been apart enough to know the internals are indeed stock, oem parts
True story bro.
Wish I could take my 1991 to you .
Get out the wrenches and start making mods. Nothing really exotic on this car and most of it was done in my garage. Make it happen! Oh yeah, have fun too!
What gears do this fox body have? and did you at least put Heavy duty valve springs on the heads or roller rockers? Because 12s and everything stock sounds farfetched.
It’s not impossible for a stock 5.0 valvetrain to run in the 12s under the right conditions (at or below sea level air).
The car ran it's best pass (12.68) with 4.30's. It has 4.56's now in preparation for future upgrades. It does have 1.7 Cobra rockers and I also did replace the worn- out stock valve springs because after 120,000 miles and 6,000rpm shifts- the valves were floating. The car went 12.89 with stock E7 heads/ intake spacer/ electric water pump/ roller rockers. When I put on the modified E7 heads it went a best of 12.68.
Consistency is the key in bracket racing I think that's where the difference is. More of a crap shoot if you don't know how to shift right if you got a manual
Love this! And love that you ribbed the MAGA cultists.
Equal opportunity ribbing is guaranteed here. Humans...
Ya put a big smile of my face with this post. Great work in all the right places - Absolutely nothing wrong with a 12. Hope you're still having fun out there.
Fun & smiles are what we’re all about. After The Lost Year we managed to get to the track in ‘21. Reports on that coming up. Agent AOD is getting prepped for a new assault on the 1320 in 2022
Trying to have fun. If it’s not fun then why bother!
Is your foxbody transmission a stock transmission? What gears do you have in it?
No it’s not stock. It’s been modified in a few different ways. I’ll list the mods: 1- 4,200 stall converter 2- SilverFox fixed pressure manual valvebody with a trans brake. 3- slight mods to the oiling system just to add a little extra insurance against premature wear and tear. 4- Solid input shaft. Ran it this way for quite awhile. Recently added a better gear set out of a 4r70w trans. Unfortunately, We haven’t really gotten a chance to take maximum advantage of the better 4r7Ow gearing as other things were giving us problems. Hoping to reap those rewards in 2022. Hope this helps.
@@black88coupe do you drive it daily?
@@oscarvillarreal8951 I did.
@@black88coupe does it over heat on you with the stuff you did? Because your car seems stock and can be driven daily with the mods you did. Just curious?
@@oscarvillarreal8951 No issues overheating. I have a good radiator and a really good water pump. No stock stuff but nothing exotic either.
How much does this car run in a 1/4 ml. After all the hole reduction you did on it? How many lbs. Did you shave off?
It weighs 2,740lbs minus driver. My goal was 10lbs off the front and I exceeded that goal by a few lbs.
The car is almost 50/50 front to rear ratio with E7 iron heads.
Best pass was a 12.68.
