VANS RV-12. Flat tyre repair and lessons learned.
This is a follow-up on the video about the tools for emergency aircraft repair I posted earlier.
ua-cam.com/video/pacReOHVuus/v-deo.html
We flew our RV-12 to Aldinga in South Australia in January 2025 and found our plane with a flat tyre in the morning.
This video is about our experience with repair work conducted out of the comfort of the home hangar.
There are some lessons and some unanswered questions.
Lessons:
1. Make sure the tools you have in your flight bag are right.
2. Have a few plastic bags for keeping parts from getting dirty or lost.
3. Have a few sheets of paper towel.
4. Have a tyre pressure gauge.

Using a generous amount of tire talc powder (inside the tire and on the tube) will help with the tube wear issue. Instead of rubbing a hole, it allows the tire and tube to move. See section 5 of the RV-12 Maintenance Manual.

Hey Oleg, Impressed to see you using your self built avionics. I feel like developing another procedure for refueling to prevent mishaps doesn't fix the issue if you ever happen to deviate from the procedure again. Is it possible to retrofit a micro switch to you fuel filler cap/flap and route the wires back to one of your arduinos on the CAN bus for a visual and aural warning from your avionics system? The switch would not be intrinsically safe for around fuel fumes if that is a concern, but you may be able to mount the switch on the inside of the fuselage. I that's not workable then a reed switch and magnet on the fuel filler cap/flap might work.
