Binaural Rendering vs. Phantom Center?
Переглядів 1,5 тис.2 роки тому
For mixing music in Dolby Atmos, I’m trying to understand if there’s a problem with panning into object beds or actual beds instead of panning Atmos objects. From what I understand of the binaural rendering algorithm, does phantom center really translate to binaural? I’ll explain why and give audio examples. But I could be wrong! I asked this question on the Dolby forum: professionalsupport.dol...

Time-aligning multi-channel speakers with Nuendo

    Nice, my surround speakers are cheap active edifiers, good all round bass and treble. Keli L/R monitors, used a cut down gazebo for above, and temu projector stands for surround speakers. Works and translates to my 7.1 system

    Do you have bass management on your recerive? Maybe the extra signal on the LFE output was the lows that were redireceted from the other channels.

    Control room was a game changes when it came out HOWEVER, it's been YEARS and Steinberg is still limiting us to 4 Cue mixes which is not enough when tracking to most basic rhythm section (Drums, Bass, Guitar, Piano, Vocals). Why can't the cue mixes be only limited to the amount of outputs we have? isn't the who idea is to be able to send as many Cue mixes your outputs allow? Steinberg please open the option for more Cue Mixes so we can use the full potential Cubase has!

    Hi, thanks for the video, you've encouraged me to create a 5.1 setup. I see that you have a Steinberg interface, I'd like to know if the ur44c interface could work for this purpose. The specifications say that it has 2 main outputs (L,R) and 4 line outputs(1L,1R,2L,2R), in total there would be 6 outputs, but I'm not sure if I can configure it in Cubase since I haven't seen information about it anywhere. I hope you can answer my question. Thanks.

    • @balladeerstudio
      @balladeerstudio 3 місяці тому

      You'll need 6 input channels to bring the 5.1 output into your DAW. The UR44 only has four inputs, as you noted, so that won't work. I'm not sure if there are any 6-channel interfaces. The best bet is an 8-channel interface.

      @@balladeerstudio but there is no possibility of adding the 2 main outputs (L,R) to the 4 line outputs (1L,1R,2L,2R) so that they add up to 6 in total?

    • @Leo.Brodie
      @Leo.Brodie 3 місяці тому

      No, the decoder decodes the signal to 5.1. You can send those six channels directly to speakers, but if you want to bring them into a computer you need at least six input channels on your interface.

    I understand that you're looking to propose a budget Atmos. The used market for studio monitors is cheap, you need at a minimum the same speakers for the sides and rears. Then also all the same for height, for the imaging of object-based audio. They don't need to be all Yam 8's but you are not going to get imaging between studio monitors to PA speakers and then to computer speakers. Kali 6' or JBL 5'. I'll definitely agree with the 3 identical across the front just turn it upright like @SilentSynergyMusic said or use Phantom mode.

  • @SilentSynergyMusic
    @SilentSynergyMusic 8 місяців тому

    A lot of bad info in the video. The yamahas HS8 HS7 and HS5 are not constructed to be used layed on their side because of comb-filtering effect(the highs and lows speaker are in the center of the body not like NS10 which have the highs speaker at an offset), it is even explicitly written in manual to use it in upright position. Also never use white noise to calibrate speakers because it is impossible to set the low end at correct volume, use pink noise instead which is compensated for the inequalities of the white noise. For a room of a medium size the yamahas HS7 with a HS8s is more than enough you don't need the HS8 which according to my experience are overpowered for 99% users and not so precise in the mid range. Mine surround system is calibrated on cinema standard 85dbs and the HS7 are not even at 1/4 of their volume. For the sides I use HS5, they have lower power and still I have them at 1/3 of max volume adn they mix very well with the HS7s and the sub. I also use phantom center channel(sending center channel to both left and right speaker), it is an ideal solution if you always sit at the listening position and dont have space for center speaker. Remember the center channel was designed mostly for dialogs in large theaters where phantom center is impossible to achieve because you always sit too left or too right. I dont feel there is much difference in clarity compared to having a true center channel.

  • @keywestjimmy
    @keywestjimmy 8 місяців тому

    Your question has a false premise and a misunderstanding: a phantom center only applies to sound over speakers and binaural only applies to headphones. So a phantom center (by definition this is a sound-source which appears in front of the listener) is not heard in headphones and binaural played over speakers is improper because you cannot introduce speaker cross-talk into a binaural signal. Also, you are actually only rendering 2.0 stereo in your video, not binaural. True binaural must have a spherical harmonics, HRTF applied or you simply have 2.0 stereo.
