Reef Runner Sailing
Приєднався 1 жов 2017
We are a sailing school. Essentially, we teach people how to sail cruising sized sailboats. While we teach the ins and outs of sailing and deep dive into the fundamentals and theory behind what makes a sailboat move we also instill a deep passion for the drive to adventure. Sailing after all is a means to explore, relax, push yourself to new heights, and ultimately find freedom.

Prepping s/v Shearwater for Hurricane Lee - on a mooring ball - Maine
This is a mostly Timelapse video on how I prepped our sailboat for a hurricane coming to the Gulf of Maine.
It was nice to see Hurricane Lee downgrading, but with hurricanes we take no chances.
Here's a list of what I did to prep this boat. It is not all encompassing, nor is it the only way. Simply, it's my way for this boat, for this storm.
1. Removed any thing that could catch the wind: canvas, sails, solar panels, extra lines, Bimini, dodger, etc.
2. Beefed up our mooring lines and increased their length.
3. Added a third emergency mooring line. This boat only has one bow cleat. I added a pennant to the mooring ball itself, then ran it through the anchor roller, and then around the base of the mast. This would only be used as a last ditch h effort if our primary mooring lines fail.
4. Removed the anchor. More mooring lines break due to chafing on anchors than any other cause.
5. Added chafing protection at the chocks and allowed room for stretch.
6. I locked the wheel. This is in an effort to prevent the rudder from swinging back and forth as the boat swings.
7. Tested the bilge pump and ensured it was left in automatic mode.
8. Stowed everything securely.

At Reef Runner Sailing School we teach people how to sail. We then help them find the boat of their dreams with our sister company Reef Runner Yacht Sales. But it doesn't end there. In this case we helped our friends, and former students deliver their Catalina 400 910 nautical miles across the Gulf of Mexico to Key West, Florida. We had a front and a Nor'Easter bear down on us and a plethora of...
Hauling Crab Traps under Sail

Capt Jeremy was excited to get his 5 recreational stone crab traps this year. Proper sailor style, we insist on hauling them under sail. It's a bit more work, but it sure fine tunes our sail handling skills!
Hand Crank a Volvo MD7A in a Cape Dory 28 Sailboat
Переглядів 5 тис.2 роки тому
We fried our starter after crossing the Atlantic in our Cape Dory 28 sailboat. We had to resort to using the hand crank to get it started. We'd never used it before this and we found it easiest to use to people. One to crank and one to push down the decompression lever. With one person, the engine speed slowed down too quickly by the time they reaching the lever.
Burning Wood Pellets in a Dickinson Newport Solid Fuel Heater on a Sailboat
Переглядів 23 тис.2 роки тому
When we installed our Newport solid fuel heater there wasn't a lot of info online about burning pellets in it. Most people just said, "yes, you can burn pellets!" but didn't elaborate. After sailing across the Atlantic and spending a bit of time in cold anchorages in Ireland we got the hang of burning pellets in our heater, and we love it. This video details out how we do it to make life on a s...

In 2019 we purchased a Seidelmann 37 that had been severely damaged during Hurricane Michael in Panama City, FL. We spent almost 2 years completely restoring her and bringing her back to live aboard status. She is currently our home when we are in Panama City, and an ASA sailing school training vessel as one of our primary training vessels for Reef Runner Sailing School.

South Atlantic S440 Install - Cape Dory 28
Переглядів 7513 роки тому
In this video we install our South Atlantic S440 wind vane steering onto our Cape Dory 28. It was a fairly straight forward install that involves four bolts to mount the unit. We didn't feel like the recommendation from South Atlantic to not use a backing plate was a good idea so we cut an access hatch and installed a backing plate. This is the access hatch we used is similar to this: amzn.to/3...

Reef Runner Sailing ASA 101 Teaser Video
I have the cubic mini on my Catalina 30 sailboat and it is soooo much better than the dickenson! Used to have a dickenson on my last sailboat and it wasn't nearly as efficient.
You had the 440 where you could have gone smaller. How has it held up for you? Thank you
Why not build a wire mesh basket with walls that you could put a few hour burn in.
I used redstone bio bricks from tractor supply. 8 bucks for a 20lb bag, used it in my titanium stove while hot tenting. They're great, but I cut them in half with Sawzall to control heat better
I too have a Dickinson solid fuel heater and tried wood pellets. It burned so hot that in the dark of my cabin, the 3 inch flue pipe was glowing cherry red. Nope, nope, a thousand times no to wood pellets. That thin stainless sheet metal is simply not made to hold in that kind of heat. Not to mention the tremendous heat absorbed by the cabin roof adjacent to the flue pipe.
You noticed he did not use very much at a time.
Thank you for the demonstration (with multiple reasons) of why not to use wood pellets.
Well what have you done lately. Don't see your you tube channel!
@@LaRaineBarton Well genius, I meant it as a genuine compliment, how TF did you get anything other than that out of it? Walk me through your mental gymnastics......And, fun fact, I don't answer to you!
🤪
What's the 4th fuel line? Fill, feed, return, and?
I like this from the get go,
Couldn’t hear you…. You need a mic, next video
I have this same stove in a cargo conversion trailer. Works awesome. 👍
I'm looking to replace my current Eberspacher 4kw diesel heater with a more "ambient" solution - either solid fuel or diesel with a transparent flame door. I'm currently leaning towards the Refleks diesels over solid fuel as I don't believe that solid fuel in such a small heater provides any sort of overnight-long solution in very cold weather. The diesel does.
Impressive! I had an MD7A for years and never came close to hand-starting it. Good trick with the fender too.
Cool. Now how about with a spinnaker? 😉
Thanks for this review, I thought of ordering one in the near future. The price looked so tempting ! Will now go for the Windpilot, which still is way lower priced then an Aries or a Hydrovane. Sadly, those wonderful units have reached prices outside of my capabillities.
You crazy kids! This looks very helpful and very hazardous. I hope y’all got a new starter. 😊
Thanks for this - another one crossed off the list!
I think maybe oiling the crank a little would make the release more likely.
You are experiencing hot back-gassing at 5:07. This is due to the quick gassing of kiln dried pellets. Thegasses are oxygen starved .Try opening the lower damper to allow more oxygen into the stove. You can get more information about hot back-gassing online.
dude grease the crank ffs. .. . .
I think these are too expensive for what it is at $500. But you gotta have heat, especially on a boat.
Seems like a lot of problems. I was looking to get one of these. Good price but looks like I'd get what I pay for. Thanks for the info.
Nicely done!
This is awesome. Thanks so much for making this video.
Nice job, Jeremy! We hope you and yours fair well.
how many pounds will the firebox hold? thinking feeding it every hour or 2 would get real old real fast in an artic climate
You might try a different method in the Arctic then...
@@reefrunnersailing I am wondering if the Alaska model Diesel or one of the other diesels would do well too?
2 hours per pound of pellets? is that a safe calculation? how many btu's?
2 hrs per handful of pellets.
Thank you so very much!
Made me smile. We have Cape Dory 29 hull#343
Nicely done!!
I would try a battery powered drill.
Thank you. Very useful information.
Nice job! Shade tree mechanic extraordinaire!
Wow, good job! Hope you got permission to use the good scissors from Erica for the evidence is on UA-cam! Lol
Oh I had to buy a special pair just for this!! lol
Score!
Squirt hand sanitizer on the pellets they light just fine
Hand sanitizer makes a great pellet starter. It is just thick enough to stick to the pellets and lights really easy.
Brilliant!
Make sure you have smoke detectors, and fire extinguisher , you never know
Yeah! It works , but for safety, you can build a Shute with a mixer add a timer to amount feed material , this way you don’t have fumes coming into your cabin ,ain’t can be operated with 12 volt . The good part timer will give the right amount of material , Now the bottom there is another option to collect ashes , rise up a screen to collect the ambers and ashes . . Good luck . Nice warm heating you can run all night .
Careful with that handle. Many arms broken back in the day of crank automobiles. It should be cut in a way to kick it off the shaft when it starts.
It has a cut away that it should fall right off. I'm certain that's why the fender is able to knock it off so easily. Maybe a little rust mitigation on the handle would help it slip off at the right time.
All the corrosion on this windvane seems to have accured due to inadequate material pairing. Things like that shouldn't happen after just 1000 miles . I sailed with a near forty years old Aries about 20.000 miles and it looked and worked like a new one. Lately I bought a Windpilot Pacific Light for my new 27' boat and I'm quite confident that it woun't give me any issues for decades.
Yep, I think I mention this in the video. It made it impossible to remove the hardware for storage after our Atlantic crossing.
While I don't sail or own a boat I have that stove in my truck cap camper and love it. As the Maine'rs would say, it'll cook ya right outta deer and in areas I don't get cell signal it's also the entertainment. I typically burn hardwood when I can but the pellets seam like a better and less messy alternative to the engineered flaky bricks I sometimes have to burn
Please make a video to give owners of truck campers and Sprinter van campers, the idea of using this multi fuel heater. You can buy a 40# bag of Anthracite coal in ‘rice’ size at Tractor Supply and in any community of Amish people.
I'm considering to get this stove for my truck cap. Do you have any pictures of your setup? Also do you still recommend it as an option?
Great video
Get a funnel with about a 2" diameter and LONG spout. Pour your pellets into the stove through that. Easy and no mess!
Get a stainless steel cutlery holder it has holes in it I use it in my wood stove works really well
Thanks for showing, seems like a lot of effort & danger of skin burns. Propane for me.
Very real...awesome. Good to know this. That handle spinning is a thrill! Good teamwork. Maybe tie a tether to it, a very thin long enough line that would whip around but be long enough to just yank. OR...just stick with the buoy method, haha.
Would a metal water ladle work better for putting the pellets in? Also, I thought there was a tray for full size stoves. Might be able to figure out how to get a tray to put a larger amount of pellets in
He's making loading pellets as awkward as humanly possible. I wonder if he's making videos because it's all his wife will let him do while she runs the boat.
Wow, those of us who have done even smaller refits know just how much work has gone into Athena and what a superb result. Congrats.
hello I use a used toilet paper roll and put Vaseline on 1 end or cardboard used toilet paper roll and light the Vaseline //it works great I head with a corn stove for 20 years //
