      The top box becomes almost like a big lid and we just lift it up and grab the activity for the day. (The top one is Locked if that makes sense)

    I know every kid is different. I just wanted to chime in for us it works. We use Explode the Code as our main source of learning to read. I did add Bob Books as readers. Then those leveled "i can read" type readers. Now we can read books like Little House on the Prairies. We are on book 7 now. Before we started 7, I was wondering if we should continue or not cuz she basically knows how to read (grade 3-4 level). But its still good to learn all the phonics concepts like silent k or silent w. It really helped her with spelling. So we will finish 7 and move to 8.

    • @TheBalancedMom
      @TheBalancedMom 19 днів тому

      I didn't feel like explode the code was enjoyable. I prefer to teach them using some of the phonics apps instead just cause it was so dry but I'm glad it has been working for you! We used them for years with our oldest 2

    I need to use this to teach an adult, how would you go about this? I am thinking eliminate the games just go straight from the book.

    • @TheBalancedMom
      @TheBalancedMom 23 дні тому

      It depends on the adult. Is it to learn the language or is it someone that is on the spectrum and can really use the games? Yes, I can definitely see it used just the way it is. Right to the point, without the games and all the frill

    • @bobcee501

    Wow, two 26 foot trucks?! You make me feel better about our one 26 foot truck then 2 vehicles packed, one was on a trailer hooked to the uhaul my hubby drove, while i drove our truck with the kids and dog. This next time he wants a smaller uhaul truck, but we have 3 vehicles to move. Ill haul one with the truck and he'll haul the other with the uhaul.

I love saving the money (even just the $15 great clips charges) plus I don't have to deal with small talk or waiting. I have never cared if it was cut uneven by my husband because my hair is normally in a pony tail making it less noticeable.

    A couple of points, if I may. It was a disciple (Sandy Sanderson) of Jerry Mortensen from Idaho, who went to Singapore in the early 80s, and showed Singapore how to use base ten blocks to "make tens" and solve problems analytically. Singapore math is derivative of Mortensen Math. I trained teachers in Kuala Lumpur 13 years ago who had taught in Singapore and still had their kits of Mortensen blocks from back in the 80s they bought in Singapore. I have been teaching Mortensen Math myself since 1987. The C-P-A model used by Singapore is very much the Mortensen model of Build it, draw it, do notation, record the answer. However, the success of Singapore Math in Singapore is more due to the discipline they have in their schools and the family support pressuring the students to work and to succeed than to their pedagogy. It is from their values that they accrue their success not the method. MUS and C-R-A are also derivative of Mortensen Math. Steve Demme was a MM distributor prior to starting MUS.

      Thank you for sharing that! As a math teacher, I am absolutely confident that this approach works for students struggling--- do you know how I know? Because I spent years trying to figure out why the strong math students were strong in math and couldn't figure out why the struggling students couldn't get math to click. My conclusion?The strong math students are wired to move numbers around fluidly while the struggling students aren't taught to do that so it doesn't click until they are taught how to move numbers around and then of course practicing it. I have tutored sooo many struggling students over the years and time and time again, I go in with this approach and things start to click. These struggling kids start to shift numbers like it's no ones business and they become non struggling students in math! It's amazing what a strong math foundation can do in the long run for students!!

    The last time I moved, I moved with 2 months notice. I know that sounds like a lot but I do most of the packing and I work 50 hours a week if not more. I normally start getting ready with the move 6 months out so this was very different. I had my husband help since it was getting to be too much. It ended up being the most stressful of the 6 moves we had. Thinking back now I think it was because we didn’t have time to go through and get rid of stuff. We were just packing everything we had even if it wasn’t needed. Day of moving day and all of our stuff wouldn’t even fit in a 26 foot uhual. We had to have my mom in large SUV make 6 more trips to clear stuff out. To be fair my inconsiderate in-laws dumped us with a fair amount of stuff 4 months before we moved and they swore it would be out before we moved. It wasn’t. Plus my sister in law moved in with us too (long story) so it wasn’t just my stuff and my husband stuff. But still the move was to stressful. This time I’m going hellfire. I did our laundry room yesterday and got rid of 2 large black bags of stuff (all be it some was trash) but it still felt nice.

      Your stressful move sounded like ours! We couldn't fit into 2 trucks that were both 26 feet each! Scary!!! And then our last move, we ran out of time packing and just had everyone grab and go ... We loaded a 26 foot truck this last time ....13 cars/vans completely packed and a few trailer loads with a bunch of my van loaded for anoether few weeks before. It was the worst, most disorganized move all because we were so focused on remodeling the house we moved into! Totally understand you!!!

    • @TheBalancedMom
      @TheBalancedMom 6 місяців тому

      Yes to both of your questions. Math is like learning a new language-- they really need the practice and truthfully, dimensions doesn't have the typical repetitive problems over and over as you see in many curriculums.

      Yes to dimensions. And yes to all the problems. They don't have tons of practice like some of the other curriculum we've used where they have 30 practice problems for a lesson. Each problem is designed differently from the previous one

    Have you used math in focus ? I have a sixth grader that just finished up primary mathematics standards edition 6A and 6B and that is as far as the curriculum goes, it has been a great curriculum, but I am struggling with what to use for her next year in seventh grade, I looked into math in focus for seventh grade because it is colorful, but I’m wondering how math in focus would compare to dimensions seventh grade thank you in advance for any advice!!

    • @TheBalancedMom
      @TheBalancedMom 8 місяців тому

      I have used math in focus with students that I tutored and it's also a great curriculum! Still uses Singapore math so I believe it would be a smooth transition. I would look into math in focus to make sure that 7th grade is really pre-algebra while 8th should be a full algebra class.

    I appreciate your comments for sure! It's definitely a gentle math. But the stories each week do reinforce the real world examples - and the copy work is because of the roots in Charlotte Mason method. Also, I can't tell you how many times in this curriculum the child is asked to explain to the teacher, in their own words, each concept. Many many many. Thanks for your video! :)

    • @TheBalancedMom
      @TheBalancedMom 8 місяців тому

      I enjoy the real world to be more involved in math. For example, when students learn about focal points... I like them to create their own parabolic "cooking tool" to cook hotdogs on it using the mathematical focal points not just read about it. I thought they can do better with that and include more discovery lessons instead of telling the "rule".

    • @TheBalancedMom
      @TheBalancedMom 8 місяців тому

      The teaching guide will say things like "have your students....." So it's set up for a classroom while the home one is made for teaching at home. I would highly recommend you get one or the other... I used the teacher guide but that's because I wanted to see how they set it up for a classroom and I tweaked to my own children. But the home educators guide is wonderful in giving parents the tools they need to actually teach the lessons!!

    Hello 👋 😅 So math was always my favorite subject growing up, which I believe has made me picky when it comes to math curricula. We started out with Saxon for my older 3, but the lentgthy lessons in the higher levels were not working for my ADHD children. We have (regrettably) tried Math in Focus (never again), Math Mammoth, CTC Math, Mathseeds, and a couple of others briefly. They are currently using CTC, but I really think a physical, tangible, textbook approach would work best. I have 5 children in grades K, 1, 5, 6, and 7. I want a math program that they can all use, but that is not so teacher intensive that I burn out switching from child to child. Do you think Dimensions would work well for us? Is it too late to switch for my older ones? I fear that the damage is done for my oldest who has had the most switches.

    • @TheBalancedMom
      @TheBalancedMom Рік тому

      I think 6th and 7th is a harder transition to Singapore without having the younger years under their belt. They may still transition well if they are stronger math students but I think Singapore has SUCH a strong program in the early years and I don't think they're older grades are as good. It grew exponentially in difficulty and personally, I think it's too much daily. I would recommend moving the you get ones but I'm not sure what program to recommend for the older ones, because I switch to 1 semester of pre-algebra from math you see and then I use my own curriculum for algebra and higher up

    • @peachy_reina
      @peachy_reina Рік тому

      @@TheBalancedMom thank you for your quick response! I think I may definitely switch the younger ones. They have used Mathseeds which is a bit similar to Singapore in some ways.. I took a look at placement tests and I think that if I switched my 5th grader, she would need to start with 4a. We could definitely speed through some of it. As for my 6th and 7th graders, do you think Math U See could be a good fit for them? If I can't figure this out, it looks like I may end up keeping them with CTC and using Math Mammoth for extra practice since I already have the CD.

    • @TheBalancedMom
      @TheBalancedMom Рік тому

      I would continue with CTC and the extra practice---- just cause it's not worth switching to math you see for the a few years and I wouldn't necessarily recommend higher level math you see because it's so simple and lacks the rigor

    This is totally encouraging because I felt that 100 easy lessons can be boring so after 4 kids, I am trying all about reading. I may get my 100 easy lessons out again and may even try it again. How old was your daughter at the time? Thanks for sharing.

    • @TheBalancedMom
      @TheBalancedMom Рік тому

      I started when my oldest was 4 BUT I felt like that's too young now when I look back. I'd start when child is 4 and only do 1 a week or 1-2 lessons for a few weeks to really slow it down. I would even push waiting until 5 and still going slowly because school can really burn these kiddos out when they are start sooo young. But if you do plenty of games and such 1 lesson a week is great for such a young child
