Get to know us & WHY we moved to America | British girl in America | Amber In America | Ep:1
The little kids are sometimes to afraid to say anything at all. Some people think it’s rude. I have kids so I know it’s a fear thing and not a disrespect issue. But most kids just say trick or treat. You might see some that are more eccentric and use a joke or something usually going along with the costume. Depending on where you live you might not even get many trick or treaters. I say anyone ringing the door bell holding a bucket or bag can have candy. Ringing the doorbell of strangers is enough for me. 😅 happy Halloween 🎃
Knock knock... Who's there... Give up the candy or I'll be the 1 laughing... this is America. Were serious about our treats , but even more serious about out tricks. Cheers.
I've heard of that kind of thing in some places in the U.S. but we never did it. It all depends in where you are. The locals will school you on what is customary.
I'm in Alaska and we don't have to perform, you say trick or treat, and if they don't have a treat available then they get a trick-like toilet papering someone's house and yard.
See I wasn’t allowed to go trick or treating as a kid, in England. Moved to Scotland at 18. Took my son trick or treating last year for first time and I has no idea a joke or song or something was expected and people do ask for them!! So my son ended up sprouting a whole load of nonsense and just confusing people as we were totally unprepared! So i prepared him this year with 3 jokes but got the distinct impression some folk just wanted you to take a sweet and my poor boy was like “but I need to tell you my joke first….” 😂😂😂😂 he told a joke at every door and I think people liked it tbh!!
So he chose trick
Nope, just give it
Totally normal in Scotland to do some sort of party piece to earn your treat
Totally in his 🧠... NOT a thing
No😂 the jokes are not a thing
I trick-or-treated in the 80s and just took my kids this week. Never heard of the joke thing. We do occasionally run into people who asked us if we wanted the trick or the treat, but they rarely had a trick for us, they were just joking around. However, we did meet a lady who had forgotten that it was Halloween and had no candy, so she offered them a story, instead. 3 out of 4 kids thought it was the best treat of the night.
Used to be there would be that older neighbor who would ask what their trick would be, so I think there is an historical basis for wanting something before the candy got given, but it'd probably mostly faded out of existence by now ☺️
No jokes, just make sure to get the kids to say trick or treat, some get lazy and just open the bag …. They gotta learn to ask lol
Maybe that’s a southern thing because I’m in Wisconsin and have never ever heard of this
Make joke telling normal again!
Im totally going to start asking trick or treaters to tell jokes. I give the best candy
It totally normal to tell a joke in St. Louis, MO
Yea thats not a thing in America
That is not a normal thing to do in the US. We don't have to "preform" for our treats.
If he keeps requiring a performance for a mini Reese’s cup you’re going to see the Trick side of the Trick or Treat😂 You could get TP’d or egged at worst, but they’ll probably just avoid your house. We just encourage a “Trick or Treat” and a Thank you, but that’s all.
We get the occasional request for a joke every year! It’s not unheard of but not really the norm either. And it’s usually uncomfortable if the kids can’t think of one lol
First time that I've heard of it.
I'm from Texas, and if you don't give the candy, you're the one that gets a trick (the teens would TP or egg your house).
When I was a kid several decades ago our elementary school music teacher always taught us a halloween song... thankfully. Because while trick or treating we would be asked by maybe 15% of the houses to sing a song or tell a joke so we always had the three little witches song in our back pocket ready to recite. It was usually older people that asked.
No jokes in the USA. Just saying trick or treat is enough. Don’t pick trick.
Looked good until you put pickles on. I've never understood putting pickles on a burger.
I like Swiss roll in the bottom instead of lady fingers but now I'm really in the mood for trifle!
Halloween originated in Scotland (and other celtic countries). Here it's called "guising" (going out in disguise) and you have to do a party piece like a joke or a song to get sweets. Sadly the traditional guising is being replaced with the US trick or treat now.
No jokes here in the US… kiddos just want candy
That sounds like such fun! I’m American so to Welcome you guys here, I’ll give you a joke. Why can’t witches have babies? Because their husbands have Hallow weanies
Yip, I'm Scottish it's a thing!!!
Philly girl, kids got treats, teens had to give a trick for a treat. I had one group that worked up routines.
In Scotland its normal to tell a joke or sing a song ( even a poem ) at Halloween before you get your sweets
Google “Beggars Night” in Des Moines Iowa. This has been a tradition for the night before Halloween since 1938. I’m so glad to hear it’s a thing in Scotland too!!
Agree with Andrew. I'm also in St Louis, and some homes require a joke. Not all of them, but it's normal. Some houses will provide you a joke if you don't have one for other houses, too. Whether they give candy without the joke, though, then is based on the quality of the costume (or how young the kid is).
I am also in St. Louis and came to say the same thing.
Totally a Scottish thing! 😂🏴 when I was little it was either a joke or a song!!! 😂 ask you hubby if he remembers the witches of Halloween song 🎵
In Glasgow id ask "trick or treat" treat... id ask "joke or song/ditty" and yeah best do something and we carved Turnip
Growing up in the Midwest jokes were expected. Now, living in the north west, no one does jokes. Bring jokes back!
8 or 9?! We start trick or treating at like 5:30!
I’ve never heard this. Not related but my Dad likes to only give out one piece of candy so he can count how many kids came by. He thinks around 90 this year. 😂 I would be giving kids handfuls😂 We live out in the country so no trick or treaters here.
They used to do that.. but not since the 70s
YOU told a joke or sang a song or did a wee dance for your treat and you said when they opened the door The Sky is Blue the Grass is green may I have my Halloween.............................better times.
See, here's a lovely example of a proper cockney accent in 2024 that's not whiny and not just RP or S.. SSB? What was it they said that's more prevalent in London these days? Anyway, here's the accent I wanna study for the amateur VA project I'm working on. 😊
Amazon
Yes in Scotland and some parts of Northern Ireland a Joke is part of trick or treat. No Joke you get a trick on you.
Your husband is going to get your house egged
Yes!
Most people don’t expect a “trick”, but sometimes you get the funny dad or grandpa who says okay which one is it- trick or treat? And most kids say treat but I mean the parents joke around.
Spirit Costco Home Depot, Amazon
No jokes
like I get it cause "TRICK or treat" but to expect a joke, not a thing. Just say "trick or treat"
