Replacing engine coolant temperature sensor on 2003 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4L
Thanks
The blue part doesn’t engage when I press my brake. Does it mean it needs to be replaced? I got the 2 new switches and will try replacing those this weekend to see if that fixes it
How did you get so much space at the bottom after removing the alternator because I have the alternator out of the way but still no room
You saved my bucks. Thanks.
Hi All--Just an fyi from my 1999 F-150 5.4 ---This is the ECT ---I hooked up my scan tool from my obd2 port---shows ECT 82 degrees---verified correct sensor by undoing connection to it---scan tool then read -40 degrees---verifying it is the ECT for my truck---hope it helps! UPDATE---ok now---even though the trucks computer called it a ECT (via obd2) after removing it(was a total pain) it is indeed the Cylinder head Temperature Sensor -im guessing its used for both..So if your going to replace it order the chts... ECT that you can order (Amazon) will not fit.--again i hope this helps
That is the head temperature sensor. Following this video I lost a day of work and had to thumb a ride back to the parts house. Coolant temperature sensor is near thermostat housing
u can do by pass by holding down the shifter while pushing it to the right and press the button and dont forget to press your brake and P to Drive. thats what im doing for now while waiting for my shifter assembly to comes in so i dont have to replacing the rest of the part of it.
thank you very much excellent video.
this video was a big help. When I thought about going to a dealer I didn"t even want to guess how much it would cost so after watching the video I started to check the wiring.while sitting there and pressing the brake pdal I started to tap the blue solenoid and suddely the shifter worked. Thanks again for the video.

The gentleman in the video is working on a modern American vehicle. American cars stopped using standard (aka 3/4") sizes for bolts, nuts, and other fasteners some 45 years ago in the automotive realm. Its METRIC and it has been the standard for the correct measuring method in AMERICA since 1975. 3/4 converts to 19 millimeters. The man in this video demonstrates this is the best and most efficient way of removing and replacing the CTS (Cylinder head Temperature Sensor). Make sure you use the electronics cleaner if you find the sensor connector or sensor is wet from antifreeze. You will not want to put that connection back together wet like it is in the video. I say these things as a Master Technician with over 35 years exp.
How did you remove the middle counsel? My drivers license fell in there.
Lol. Sorry. This just cracked me up.
Bro, if obd not show any errors, but car eat more fuel by car pc , Should I change coolant sensor? 99 lincoln navigator have
Well that's the exact way to change that sensor. I pulled one out and the threads are metric and seal with a gasket, the Standard brand one TS61 has 3/8 pipe threads. I put the old one back in and changed the thermostat.
We have used metric as the standard for the past 45 years. In 1975, Congress passed the Metric Conversion Act, which declared metric as the preferred system of the United States, and the U.S. Metric Board was created to implement the conversion. America began testing road signs in kilometers under President Jimmy Carter, who supported the efforts to go metric. The standard brand is using metric not standard threads for a 2003 Ford Expedition.. It is not 3/8's thread at all that is pitch being used on those Standard brand parts you mentioned. I sold them for 15 years and have installed literally over a hundred of them personally in the last 35 years as a master auto mechanic. They are metric threaded and metric fastened. The thread pitch is M10 or 10 mm pitch. It is a course thread known as M10-1.50.UNC (Unified National Course). Well…That certainly was a lot of words. Lol. Nobody asked though. Just saying.
My 2001 F-150 5.4L was having the Service Engine Soon light coming on. OBD Code - PO125 showed possible thermostat issue and/or possible temperature sensor switch issue. I replaced the thermostat, erased the Code (error) message and so far, so good.
Vc tem wattszap para podermos nos falar tenho uma Ford ranger v6 97 aqui no brasil
Did you get the code P1299?
I shol need answers before I call my mechanic
I had the same problem with a B15 nissan sunny it was a blown fuse. The power windows also did not work 10Amp fuse under the dashboard.
This video saved me and my son about $913 at the dealer for a whole new shifting console it was the loose wire on his 2016 Nissan Sentra. Thank you so much for posting this video it was very very helpful
What was the problem with ur truck.. what was the simthoms
The engine kept dying for overheating after few minutes of driving. However, everything was okay with the engine, it had a faulty sensor that needed to be replaced.
Wich sensor u replaced?
Coolant temperature sensor
@@Bizzrat2011 thank you sir
It's nice to know where it's at but it would have been nice to see you take it apart from the very beginning.
Just remove the alternator.
How did tu remove the box under the runner Coolant
I can’t reach The sensor because of the box
O O O, O’RIELY’s.... Autoparts.
OW!
How does coolant get into the sensor ?
I had a small coolant leaking by the intake manifold that made it's way down to the sensor
Bizzrat2011 so the only way the coolant got into the sensor if from a leak above. The coolant can’t get in from the bottom ?
There's also a pipe that leaks in the valley. Runs from.back of water pump to back of engine then heater core hoses connect to it.
I know your question is old. He replaced the cylinder head temperature sensor. It has no contact with the coolant. Over by the oil filler is where the coolant temperature sensor is. There's a little misinformation in the video.
What you are calling the coolant temp sensor is wrong it is called the (CHT) Sensor or Cylinder Head Temp Sensor the coolant temp sensor looks a little different.
Thankyou .and there isn't even coolant in that hole
replacement part linK?
Thank you! Gonna try this today. It happens to me a lot and goes away when I restart my car. Hope this works
Great video! This seems to be a common issue with the Sentra.
And with the Alitmas
I have this same car. It's a piece of shit. I will never buy Nissan again. First and last time.
same
Thank you for your video! I will definitely try this! Hopefully it’s just a bad connection
GREAT JOB 👍👍👍 APPRECIATE YOUR TIME AND HELP MAN !! VERY COOL
Is there only one CHT sensor on a 2004 Ford Expedition or two? And after changing out the CHT what would cause the service engine soon light and P0128 code to pop up again?
Troy Sampson there’s one CHT sensor and one coolant temperature sensor/sender. Check out RockAuto to find the exact parts you need for your make & model.
P0128 is most likely a faulty thermostat.
Thanks Dude, you saved my a**!
Good video..just started havng this problem
Mine is capped off on the coolant crossover tube. Trying to figure out where the other sensor goes? 02 f150 5.4
Mine is also capped, Was it at another location for you? Or was the sensor different
Hi I’m having issues with my 2013 sentra, and once in a while I have to stick something in the shifter hole to be able to move from park to drive. But it happens once in a while, what do you think it is.
Did you ever find out what it was my does the same thing
Thanks bro
Thanks I stuck a nail in the release hole will look at this also to fix
Thank you for the video. The problem is the little piece that is tucked on the inside. It has 2 wires that are bended and heldn inside a plastic path. i think because od the extreme bend and pressure the wire was broken and did not make a contact. I replaced and soldiered a new piece of wire and all works well. Thanks again for the easy fix!!!
Mine has been stuck for a while, used a bobby pin to unlock. But now it’s stuck and has gotten harder to switch!!! So I’m hoping after watching your video it works . Thank you
did it work?
You should have used a flat head , works alot better the s bobby pin
Great video! Did you ever determine where the coolant was leaking from and were you able to fix that?
Bubba Mcflubba it was human error from prior work done on car. It was leaking from the coolant intake pipe right above the censor. The clip was left hanging and that caused the pipe to leak at the connection
Bubba Mcflubba .
My coolant it was normal level but when I replaced the temp sensor was dry no coolant it's this normal?
hi does this sensor work on crown vic 2007 ??
yes but if youre having overeating problems on a CV its likely a blown head g or a blown intake manifold gasket at the water jacket on the cylinder head or a thermostat. Keep in mind that the CV is known for being a PITA for burping all theair out of the coolant system. Fords are also notorious for failing connectors in these areas.
Did it run rough before the sensor was replaced ?
That is the CHT, Cylinder Head Temp Sensor, it's a dry hole. NOT the Coolant sensor. No coolant touches this sensor. If you are getting Error Code PO128, this is prob not your issue. The 4.6l has this in almost the same spot. Has nothing to do with coolant. To remove use a 19mm Crows Foot wrench, or you can heat and bend an old 19mm box end wrench. Be CAREFUL when re-installing not to break off the plastic part of the new sensor.
John N Ture facts. Made my own box end crows foot out of wrench and socket. Worked good on my f150 4.6 2002. Thanks for the tip!
Yes exactly. When I changed out my intake manifold, I thought it might be the ECT but when I pulled it out I could tell that's not what it was. I suspected it was the cht sensor too. Do you know where the ECT is though?
@@mustangguy8981 I need to know where the ECT is on a 2004 expedition 5.4.let me know thx
@@DM-mm7rs it may be a cylinder head temp sensor instead. Under the intake manifold.
@@mustangguy8981 thanks I think the same but they sell a ECT for my vehicle so it’s very confusing
Thanks for the video. Helped me a lot.
Terry G glad to help
Did this fix the problem? I changed mine 3 months ago and have same problem again.
Joe Farmer its been over a year and half and have not had any issue since then... its important that there is no fluid in the connection cable obstructing power to the censor. It might cost you $45 for the cable at ford dealership
would this be the same on an 05 ford expedition? what tools did you use? im getting people wanting to charge me 300-800 to fix a 20 dollar part. hope you respond back thanks
vanemar88 Please note that I'm not a car expert, but if it helps I used 3/4 Combo wrench to take out the sensor, 10mm socket wrench to remove the alternator. You Once I moved the alternator to the side, there was plenty of space to work around the sensor. I believe 03 & 04 have the same engine but I'm not sure about 05, you might wanna look into that. The whole process took about two hours to complete
