Pottery Techniques: Thrown Foot
In this instructional pottery video I will demonstrate making a thrown foot. A thrown foot gives the impression that a pot has been trimmed, but the bottom of the pot remains flat. For this wheel throwing technique, it is important to throw the bottom of the pot as thin as possible to prevent cracking. This technique is super useful for making two part vases. Throw a volume with a thrown foot, allow to reach leather hard, attach and throw a neck, wire off and you’re done!

Pottery Basics: Using The Undercutting Tool
Переглядів 1,7 тис.2 роки тому
The undercutting tool is an essential pottery tool for removing excess clay from the side of a freshly thrown pot. Using it correctly can save you a ton of time trimming away excess clay later. In this video I demonstrate how to hold the undercutting tool to the side of the pot to keep everything on center and what hand position to use. I also demonstrate how to cleanly remove the ring of clay ...
Pottery Basics: Opening For Cylinders
Переглядів 3,5 тис.2 роки тому
Opening clay on the potters wheel is just what it sounds like. You create an “opening” that is the beginning of any pottery shape. I think the way it is done determines if your piece will be successful, or not. I think about opening clay on the potters wheel in two distinctly different ways. The first way, and the topic of this video is opening for a cylinder with flat bottom and vertical walls...

Pottery Basics: Wedging
Переглядів 5192 роки тому
This video covers the basics of wedging. Wedging is the process of folding clay over and over again against a hard surface. It helps to expel air, make clay more dense, homogenous and actually softens the clay by breaking up thixotropy (gelling or hardening in the bag without water loss over time). I will also try to dispel some myths about wedging and give you the information that you need to ...

Pottery Basics: Spiral Wedging
Переглядів 10 тис.4 роки тому
Spiral Wedging is the wedging technique preferred by most potters because it is the most efficient means of breaking up thixotropy, removing air, and mixing. Another really great reason to learn spiral wedging is you always end up with a cone shape, the perfect shape for the potters wheel. Spiral wedging is a little tricky to learn, so check out this video for an up close look from two differen...

You would not believe the number of people on UA-cam talking about "squeezing" then pulling straight up. But when you look at their technique it is obviously "offset" and stretching like he is explaining here! The confusion is that most people don't even know what they are doing; clearly their fingers are offsets (inside is higher than outside) but they think the fingers are aligned and they are squeezing! They will even cut the pot in half and tell you they are squeezing... An amazing explanation in this video.

This is one of the best tutorial videos I've seen! I've been throwing since February with pretty decent results, but your video helped me realize a few potential flaws in my technique. I had been pushing inward with my knuckle to create the bulge and I think that's why the bottom of my cylinders were never quite right. Excited for studio time this morning! Thanks so much for the terrific lesson.

Hi Adam! Thank you for video on knuckle pulling cylinders. I have watched your video multiple times looking for a tip you made on one I saw. I’m looking for the comment you posted about a “mistake you made for about 8 years” when you pull up and a lot of clay rips off instead of moving up and making the cylinder taller. I think the fix was to make a round bulge vs. a bulge with a sharp ridge. I can’t seem to find that comment again and wanted to make sure this was the correct fix. Could you please direct me to the video where you addressed this problem please? I can’t seem to find it again. Thank you very much! Super helpful videos. Very clear and the things you make (e.g., vases) seem so easy for you. So professional. Thank you very much! Ellen
