Saxophones get a bad wrap. So you can tuna fish but not a sax. When it's done well, like this, it is amazing. I love seeing a tubax in action.

One of the most stirring and beautiful pieces of music ever written. I haven't listened to it in a very long time. I particularly love the last part of the first movement. It's always been one of my very favorites moments in classical music. Rousing, defiant, proud, and perfectly concluded. And who would have guessed such a full and varied sound would come from a group of saxophones? Although, a few times, it might have started to sound a bit like a Jewish bar mitzvah, overall it was largely difficult to distinguish from a full orchestra. Especially resembling the violas, cellos, and basses. Profoundly excellent job.

This is absolutely outstanding playing. A truly sonic tour de force. Bravo!

Where would I get a copy of the score? I'd love to take this transcription and apply it to clarinets -- the voicing and orchestration is much better than other clarinet choir versions I've heard, just on the better balance on the number of the different sized saxophones. Six Eb clarinets does seem like a very daunting orchestration, but if six soprano saxes can blend as wonderfully as they do here, six Eb clarinets should in principle!

This is undoubtedly the finest saxophone ensemble I've ever heard. At points it is hard to tell this from a full symphony orchestra.

Excellent playing! Intonation is superb, and that’s a much larger compliment than it sounds like. You’re playing almost at string quartet level, and that’s also a pretty big compliment! Keep at it for 30 years, and you’ll be there! (String quartets often play together all their lives.) Soprano: it’s a beast to control intonation and tone, but you’re doing a very good job of it. The mouthpiece exercise will fill out your high register and control. (One octave scale on mouthpiece alone, in tune, with dynamics) It lowers your overall pitch, and may require tuning sharper as a result, but it solidifies the entire range of the horn and consolidates it into a consistent timbre. If you guys and girls will stay together, in 10 years you’ll be at the top of the game. Get a series of dates, then see if you can get an agent to reach out further. The most important thing is that all four of you are very fine musicians. The path forward is playing to non-academic audiences. Take any gig you can get at first. “No gig is too degrading,” is the motto of most sax players. 😸 But that’s temporary. Keep moving up!
