Absolutely outstanding! Amazing ensemble sound, beautiful tone from each player, technical prowess. Wow. This is really, really good. Oh, and Arno Bornkamp is just hanging out playing F alto/mezzo soprano like it’s nothing. Lol. This is how you play classical saxophone, kids. I cannot get over the tone quality from each and every player. Just pure and immaculate and perfectly in-tune. Uitstekend, en goed gedaan!
Wahhhhhhh !! Incredible ! Well when I close my eyes, I can hear woodwinds, brass and even strings in the colour. The saxophones family is amazing ! Bravo !!
One of the most stirring and beautiful pieces of music ever written. I haven't listened to it in a very long time. I particularly love the last part of the first movement. It's always been one of my very favorites moments in classical music. Rousing, defiant, proud, and perfectly concluded. And who would have guessed such a full and varied sound would come from a group of saxophones? Although, a few times, it might have started to sound a bit like a Jewish bar mitzvah, overall it was largely difficult to distinguish from a full orchestra. Especially resembling the violas, cellos, and basses. Profoundly excellent job.
Where would I get a copy of the score? I'd love to take this transcription and apply it to clarinets -- the voicing and orchestration is much better than other clarinet choir versions I've heard, just on the better balance on the number of the different sized saxophones. Six Eb clarinets does seem like a very daunting orchestration, but if six soprano saxes can blend as wonderfully as they do here, six Eb clarinets should in principle!
His horn is a vintage Conn F mezzo-soprano. They were originally made and marketed in the 1930's but received little interest from the buying public since there was no practical application for them in bands or orchestras. Conn used the inventory of horns that did not sell as tools to teach repair technicians how to fix saxophone damage. They would intentionally damage them and have the technicians practice repairs after-which they were then just discarded. As a result, there are few remaining examples left.
I don't know but I hear the strings, the oboe, everything omg
This is undoubtedly the finest saxophone ensemble I've ever heard. At points it is hard to tell this from a full symphony orchestra.
Hier hört man Musik in höchster Vollendung, und alle Klangfarben meisterhaft interpretiert, ich liebe solche Aufnahmen 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
I miss playing in this ensemble : )

Finally, something appropriate for an F mezzo. It's nice to see the Eb Tubax making its way into large sax ensembles.

Fantastic! Not only the playing and arrangement, but musical direction and recording quality. Thank you!
This group is excellent! Good timpani, too. Love the Ringer timpani 💜

Very nice ensemble! Good work! Nice sounds, blend and intonation. I enjoyed it very much!

Prachtig gespeeld! Die mezzosopraan in F in het largo was wel heel speciaal, en goed gekozen.
Has anyone noticed that this tenorplayer easily circuaörbreaths without a blink?
The arrangement and the players are just incredible, that was excellent!

Does anyone know the maker and model of the silver saxophone played by the soloist in Movement II?
vintage mezzo-soprano saxophone in F (about 13 minutes in - mvt II). Played by the professor there - Arno Bornkamp.
Probably a Conn :)
maybe YANAGISAWA 9937 ?

That guy sitting next to the drums is not impressed.
Saxophones get a bad wrap. So you can tuna fish but not a sax. When it's done well, like this, it is amazing. I love seeing a tubax in action.
