Lake Superior Surfski
Приєднався 12 сер 2011
I live in Duluth, Minnesota and started paddling Surfski in 2019. I am basically self taught, which is embarrassingly obvious from the videos, particularly the early ones. Almost all the paddling I do is on Lake Superior, which I paddle year round.
I paddled solo for most of the first couple of years until I met some great paddlers from the Twin Cities who occasionally come up to run a downwind with me. Fortunately for me, several intrepid paddlers have moved to Duluth in the last year - it’s so nice to share downwind runs with friends on a regular basis!
My first Surfski was a Think Zen. Now I paddle an Epic V9 and a Vega Flex.

V9 damage from a roof rack failure

We had a roof rack failure resulting in serious damage to my V9 as well as a friend’s OC-1. This video is an overview of the V9 damage and I decided to make it public because I am attempting to fix it myself and thought there may be some interest in updates as I make progress. I am not planning anything fancy for videos, just pictures and maybe short video clips with narration, provided I can m...
Last downwind of 2024??

Conditions were routine but in December runs are to come by due to the lack of light and cold temps. It is pretty hit and miss whether I can get another run in this year. I was particularly happy to get in a December run as now I have 5 complete years where I have gotten a run in on Superior in every calendar month - the last month I missed was December 2019, the year I started paddling. It has...

Zach started at Bracketts Corner, I joined in at Quarry Point and we finished at Herbster. Broad fast waves made for difficult linking until we approached Herbster which is slightly protected from the WSW wind.

Impromptu late afternoon downwind

The forecast showed a NE wind picking up after sundown so I didn’t think a run would be in the cards today. Sarah and I went for a mtn bike ride and while we were on Hawk Ridge I noticed the wind had turned to the NE but it was light and there were no white caps at that point. About 30 minutes later the wind in the woods really picked up and I could feel the cold air off the Lake so I texted Rh...
Beautiful fall day, 2 runs
Переглядів 1,3 тис.4 місяці тому
The dog days of summer have extended well into fall so we haven’t yet had any autumn like blows. But we certainly enjoyed a nice wind with sun! We did 2 runs, Stoney to Lester and then Stoney to McQuade. I thought the conditions were a bit faster and messier on the second run, probably didn’t help that I was a little tired.

Nice. So jealous that you have open water. Still frozen around here. Last winter I paddled 2-3 time a week in February.
Awesome!! When i move that I'm definitely wanting to kayak in the winter. Seems and looks exhilarating
Wonderful ! Glad to see your repaired boat works great again.....e.
Thanks! Hope to test it in a little bigger conditions soon.
Super cool, nice job paddling! Stay safe.
fantastic! With the thin gel coat on surfskis, isn't having the black carbon under the get coat problematic? It's always nerve wracking when sanding the gelcoat and having the darker layers under ghosting through. Great tip on using the Duratec to get a nice hard cure! Also great idea with powdered guide coat!!
Yes, I was worried about sanding through so I put the gel coat on a bit thick and didn’t sand to the smoothest possible finish. Just a couple very small areas near edges shown through.
@@ttrayn1000 step by step preparation!
Great work Tim! I like the red bungee too 😂
Thanks Jonathon!
Very impressive! You are a magician. Nice work. Maybe now I'll be motivated to repair a few gelcoat chips in my v10.
Thanks! I am definitely not going to be hesitant to fix gel coat chips anymore 😸.
Wow, that’s a brave paddle. 🌊🌊
Nicely done. Can't wait to see the final results.
@@EpicV10Paddler Thanks! I can wait for it to be done. All the repairs are faired so now it’s “just” the finish coats of gel coat and lots of sanding
Man this looks fun. I posted on another video that I just bought an OC-1. What thickness wetsuit are you using for winter swells. Is a 6/4 too much for that much activity?
@@RoushScott Yes, 6/4 wild very likely be too hot. I have a hooded 5/4 but will only use it for short, cold runs. I usually use a 4/3. Of course there are many variables involved in deciding what wetsuit to use.
I'm from the Bayfield area and trying to find a used oc-1 for fitness and downwind. I used to race oc-6 in California. If I can find one it would be fun to connect.
@@RoushScott Cool! My friend that paddles OC-1 here in Duluth learned in Hawaii. I hope you can find a canoe and we could paddle some time. There is a club that paddles OC-6 here in Duluth.
@ haha I actually found one on eBay last night located in Chicago and bought it. A Huki V1-B. Stoked!
@@RoushScottWhoa, nice!
@@ttrayn1000 hey I have another question. When you are downwinding are you typically doing one way routes with car drop offs or do you paddle up into the wind and turn about? Or both, depending. Just thinking ahead to how this would work in the Apostle islands area. Just picked up my boat. It's immaculate. Stoked.
@@RoushScott sorry for the delayed reply. Ideally, we set up a shuttle for a one way run. I do out backs when I have no other option but this is limited by the size of conditions as you spend way more time going up wind as opposed to downwind.
Very impressive. Obviously you've messed around with fiberglass/boat repair before.
Nothing like this but there is a lot of info out there to learn from.
nice Job! Questions: what product do you use to thicken the gel coat? cabosil or west systems 406?. Was the carbon that you used in and around the seat well like 1oz. ( light weight)? thanks!
Thanks! I used cabosil for thickening and the carbon is 5.7 oz.
using the gelcoat with the thickener is something I"m going to use the next time around! thanks!
@@joelleker8343Have you done some repairs?
@@ttrayn1000 Over the years I've done a few....Repaired a couple of surfskis with a big tears under the bucket from roof rack wind damage., few sea kayaks that were subjected to road damage when their roof racks came off entirely, i cut out the bucket where my hips fit to tight in 3 surfskis. Thats my greatest hits!. Still working on getting a better final smooth finish though!
@@joelleker8343Yes, the final finish is the part that I am least confident with.
Looks like a big swell coming from behind with so wind chop on top. What’s the water temp?
Speed, is there any kind of motor of any type? Where is that speed coming from? The design & weight?
Correction on my comment referring to "glass"; I meant fiberglass. Drilling holes at the end of any crack prevents the zipper effect of further cracking, I'm assuming by diffusing those forces.
Love your vids. I click as soon as you post them. I'm new to surfski, but have decent sea kayak skills. Some day I'll get to paddle lake superior. I call lake ontario home. Grew up onto the south shore of long Island surfing and stand up jetskiing in the 80's and 90's. Auto body was my background. Fan of aviation construction with grumman and fairchild/republic within 10 miles.
Amazing. I didn't even want to mess with a chip in the gelcoat on my V10! You've got mad skills.
Solid is great!!
Nice repair Tim!
Thanks Rhett!
If you weren't trained in fiberglass or carbon Kevlar work, you did an amazing job for a rookie! Using the cleco fasteners for the blind clamping is a great idea. Aviation background?Personally I would have separated the deck and hull, done direct repair from both sides, then re- glue them back together. Having repaired boat hulls and jetski hulls, I would drill a hole at the ends of the stress cracks. Then glass over. It can prevent the crack from growing better, than just glassing over. Learned that from a ship builder, engineer.
A guy I know who is an engineer tried to separate deck and hull to repair his. It was not easy to do and he aborted the mission. I believe for him the part he could not separate was where the bottom of the bucket is glued to the center of the hull. There was no easy way to get in there and cut it apart.
I have a little aviation experience, some sailplane projects years ago. That's why I had the clecos on hand. The hole drilling is an interesting tip, I have heard of doing that for glass but didn't think of it for composites.
At this stage a key point is to keep the laminate in the repair area low enough so you can add gelcoat and sand it fair with the existing hull. You may have to sand high spots in your repair areas before applying gelcoat. It might be helpful to pick a small area and completely fair and finish it so you know how low it has to be before adding gelcoat.
What about using a fairing compound to gradually merge the high spots with the original level?
What happened to the ski to cause all the damage?
@@zachhandler fairing compound is usually used to fill the low spots, not the high spots. It is not used to bring anything up to the original level, because you still need to gelcoat the repair, so before adding gelcoat the repaired area needs to be slightly lower than the level of the surrounding area. Then gelcoat is added to bring the repaired area up to the original undamaged area. It's actually important to sand a taper on the original gelcoat on the surrounding area down to the un-gelcoated repair to insure a better bond with the new gelcoat. Then slightly overfill the repaired area with gelcoat, allow it to fully cure, then wetsand the new gelcoat down to the original level with successively finer grits. The use of guide coat can be very helpful with this.
@@scottcummins9021 The wind was 2mph. I put the boat on the V-bars without the bungees or bow line, and got in the car to change into my drysuit. A microburst hit, lifting the boat off the V-bars and it landed on the parking lot, separating the hull to deck joint on one side of the bucket.
Thanks for that info, I will definitely keep that in mind. I will also try and feather the edge of the repair as best as I can.
Hey Tim - buttress up the bow of your V9 during repair so it can plow through this kind of debris? There are definitely times when we could use a front plow on our skis in the Bay.
@@paulreavley5900 😹 Good idea! A couple years ago I was paddling the Zen and large tree sized log suddenly appeared coming over the wave in front of me and I had no time to really react. Luckily, it was riding very low in the water and I surfed right up onto it. Of course I became instantly unstable and fell in. It took a bit of effort to get the ski off the log from in the water with the waves and such.
Where were you on the lake?
This run was from the McQuade safe Harbor to the Duluth lift bridge.
Tim, I posted a link to your video on Whatcom Paddlers. I'm not experienced enough with surfski repair to offer any advice. Some of our commenters have not be been super optimistic or at least think that is going to be quite a bit of work. If you see the repair through I hope you can salvage a reliable ski. And your idea of showing some snapshots or video of the work during its various stages could be quite interesting.
Paul, the first couple of days after the incident I was pretty down about it. Not just about the heavy damage to the V9 but also because my friend’s OC-1 sustained damage. But if there is one consistent thing about me it is that I like a challenge. Once my mind committed to the repair it has been all go. Now that I have started and are seeing some results I am 98% certain that I will end up with a reliable V9ish ski, although it will be a little heavier, and maybe not as pretty. 😸 I will post an update in a couple days or so.
ouch, get better soon!
So sorry that happened. I would be sick. I always use extra straps when going on the highway, but I almost never use anything besides the bungies on the way to my local spot. What kind of rood rack were you using?
@@EpicV10Paddler I was using a Malone with Kayak Pro v-bars (the v-bars weren’t the problem). I will go back to adding an extra strap around the vehicle side rails.
Couple of years ago about this time of year the wind was onshore maybe 3mph. I left my Nelo550 on my V-bars without strapping it down while I changed into paddling clothes in the car. A microburst hit and the car shook once (felt like a car going by at speed while stopped for a left turn). I heard a loud noise, looked in the mirror, and saw my boat bouncing off the parking lot. Damage limited to the Hull-to-deck joint along the bucket on the port side. I fixed it myself - lots of experience with composites.
@@davidGrainger Yikes. Skis are generally so light and big it doesn’t take much to get them airborne. I am glad you were able to fix the Nelo and it sure helps to have composite experience. Looks like I am gaining a little experience myself.
Feel your pain had mine fly off the rack a couple of months ago, in for a repair now. Those transverse cracks could be a worry as they could form snap points. Really needs reinforcement from the inside. Maybe separate top and bottom hulls to access that as its so extensive. Going to be a big job either way at least if you do that you wont miss an bits.
@@waverideraus4882 Yes, I am making temporary hatches to access the major damage from inside. Separating the hull halves really isn’t feasible as they are also glued together at the stringers and not just the seam.
Aooohhh. . Fast recovery.
Thanks for all the great videos! What a year!
I am glad you enjoy the videos! They are fun for me to make.
Is that a new kayak?
No, that’s the Flex, I have had it a couple of seasons. My other ski is the V9.
Nice.
Great video and great recap of 2024!
Thank you Rhett, you’re a lot to do with the number of runs I got in this year!
Love the beach shots at the end tim
Well done gents! What do think the air and water temps were?
Low 40s
You guys seem to get some pretty good quartering practice on Superior. What cameras are you both using these days? Has Zach said what his total distance was?
He paul - i have a gopro max with a short battery life. Tim has. Gopro 9 housed inside and external battery case that gives it really long battery life. I paddled the first 9 miles on my own and then tim joined me for the last 7.5 miles.
Brrrrrr!
How was the V10 Gen 4 in comparison to your 9?
@@longdeaddude I liked it. The cockpit fit was great and I hadn’t even padded it out fully. I found it a bit less stable than the V9 but it isn’t a big jump, maybe less than the difference I found when going from the Think Zen to the V9? On this run anyway I didn’t have any concerns with stability and I never swam unintentionally. I think it’s a bit more maneuverable than the V9 and I seemed to oversteer a few of times. I definitely noticed the nose release easily several times which was a bit of an eye opener, allowed me to pop over waves and maneuver more easily. A very intriguing ski for me, I would love to get more time in it at some point.
That water is cold! Brave souls! Love your vids
I questioned in reply.. and you may not see it … Did you try a dry suit ? Why wetsuit is the choice ? Cold or extremely cold .
Very nice
Great swell city run!
Nice wave-milking! Oscar and Boyan are proud of you!
Other guy is using a foil board, or is it like a foil surfski?
SUP foil
Great videos; thank you. Working on becoming more competent in rougher conditions on the north shore of Lake Ontario but rarely see such good swells. Mostly much shorter period chop, but you have to learn how to handle it all, so no bad thing. I see you have a belt leash, and am curious if you would share what make that is, why you went to it (as opposed to a calf leash) etc.?
Thank you! I like the belt leash for several reasons. It doesn’t get under my legs in the cockpit while paddling and it is out of the way on remounts. Another reason is I can’t disconnect the leash near the shore when landing or surfing shore break because of the rocky shoreline. The connection at the stern results in low resistance in surf compared to a leash connection in the cockpit.
@ Thanks very much; makes sense. Can you relate who makes the one you use?
@ meta leash
@@ttrayn1000 Perfect - much appreciated.
