DAMIAN OSBORNE
South Africa
Приєднався 5 сер 2011
I'm a South African fine artist trying to create my most inspired and moving piece yet. Always reaching a little further. The research and knowledge, the mistakes, the skills learnt, the constant practice and the materials, are just small parts of the journey.
Being an artist is not separable from living as an artist. This may seem like just another youtube channel about art tips. And in this internet age, there are so many voices vying for the spotlight; there are many great artists, but also many copycat artists producing commercial dribble.
So it's important for us to take what we can; to find inspiration. But ultimately, we need to put our phones away, shut the laptop, take out our paints and go inward to produce something worthwhile.
Our greatest art comes from deep within. And nobody can say what's living inside of you for you. As artists, we have an obligation to give the world art. Original art.
So I hope you enjoy my UA-cam channel and that it inspires you.

Making your own oil pigments and using old masters painting materials. Using black in oil painting.
In this new series, The Alchemical Journey, I am starting with the black pigments because black represents the first stage of the Alchemist's journey, the Nigredo.
Because I grew up in Constantia, and have lived among the vineyards all my life (and worked on pretty much all the farms) I've always wanted to make my own vine drawing charcoal and vine black oil paint.
So I did. And I love it.
Check out the charcoal drawing I did with my own vine black on my website.

Charcoal Underdrawing for an Oil Painting
Thank you for the video Damien :) It's really nice also to hear a fellow South African accent! I wonder what part of SA you are from? I am impressed with the amount of effort you put into refining your medium...Do you notice much of a difference between that and store bought linseed oil... Do you find that your processed oil dries faster?
amazing to watch this process! thank you!
En español???
🧐 fascinating 🤨 I re appreciate the “Refined “ Linseed oil much higher now. What is the best medium brand?
That's a perfectly good way to ruin a palette knife. I use a crimping tool, the one I use to stretch canvas, then a pair of electrical dykes, much stronger to fold and hold the tube.
Woah... ok, centrifuges ARE valuable! So are fine micrometer grinders... Aaaand dehydrators...
can we use any oil like olive oil
No the formela of olive oil doesn't suit painting . Olive oil takes so much time to dry and it will yellow and crack over time .
Can’t i just use the oil as is what is the difference? I need help:(
It must be satisfying to be making your own materials like this! Can you please explain the different working properties of the oil as it becomes more oxidized? And also how is sun thickened and stand oil different from that? Thank you!
Or you can buy it in the art supply store LOL
Did the old masters buy premaid oil?
Nice video
Lot of wastage
Why we can’t use regular unrefined flax oil? Do you use regular natural see beach sand? How much oil did you use in ml I mean
Hi, thank you for sharing your work and insights. Loving the videos & learning from it! I’m a beginner having started art lessons late in life, however thoroughly immersed in all things art! Thank you
So fun. I love this
Is it... Is it a Beethoven?
Pozdrav ,radovi su vam fenomenalni.Molim vas dali preko crteža ugljenom olovkom mogu slikat uljanim bojama?Unaprijed hvala na odgovoru.L..Po..
can you also make it with colored pencils?
Interesting very good. Music was nice but a tad loud at times sorry. Old person syndrome lol
Beautiful.
hello, I tried this and the bone ended up very white and kind of hard. Any idea what I did wrong. Also , do you think I could make "bone white" out of it?
Hi Damian. Are you on any social platform?
I'm using large grain Himalayan pink salt in place of the salt and sand. It's working really well.
Now I'm using a coffee filter to funnel into a shot glass and I can see the pink Himalayan salt on the coffee filter.
What is silica and where to find? Does it melt
Just use some pliers? Damien, while thanking you for your entertaining and informative videos (which I just now found), please experiment: RUN AN OLD TUBE UNDER STRAIGHT HOT WATER FOR THIRTY SECONDS OR FREQUENTLY LESS, and half the time you won't even need pliers. I learned this trick from a mechanic.
Heyo! I’ve also heard that you can do ethanol cleanses so this something you know anything about?
I could watch paint mixing all day! I love the sound, it makes!
Great music. Great video. But is this a music video or an instructional video? Turn it down.
🤣It's looks like morning pea
Hi, Terre Verte is very high oil content and dries very fast, when you lay it over this layer, will this against fat over lean?
Use cold pressed oil.
The website you linked too is down. Also, do you happen to know a source that discusses the various attributes that various pigments add to oil? For instance some help to resist mold and mildew, some make it more durable, some help with UV, etc....do you know of a source of this type info?
Was the burning dried toxic ?
Nice , vineyard. How much did you pay for it. And any for sale.
beach sand can be used on that project ?
Yes for sure. I've walked down the beach and collected everything I've need to wash my oil in a single jar, water, salt and sand. I imagine our ancient artists did something just as simple and similar.
I'm sorry but not how it's done. No sans, but fullers earth (cat litter) or limestone flour. In the case of limestone flour the sludge is then used to make putty. ;)
Hi Damien, very interesting video. I've had some good results purifying linseed oil but not to the high standard that you have gone to but found your methods helpful. I once left a jar of my own purified oil in my shed by the window and forgot about it for two years. It had thickened and turned a nice very clear medium with hardly a trace of yellow and turned out to be the best I'd ever made! Thanks for your blog.
Does anyone know what happened to Tad Spurgeon’s website? When I try to access it, the browser says the server can’t be found. I cant find his book anywhere either. I literally just heard about the concept of adding chalk to home-refined linseed oil this wednesday. I’m particularly interested in solvent free painting because my bedroom is my workspace, i wont be able to open my windows in the winter, and I have many younger siblings whose brains are still developing and more sensitive to the damaging compounds in paint thinner and liquin. If anyone knows anything please let me know, its much appreciated.
I found his site years ago and have been using his methods and keeping up with updates. He announced the closure of the site around August of 22. "Living Craft" is his book, I've used it extensively. Incredible resource.
I have seen some videos making Vine black from charcoal powder. But when it dries it comes of. Like chalk. So im sure it needs a stabilizer like wax or something. Not sure. But I will be making some soon. Damian do you have Instagram. Maby we can collaborate on some stuff.
Simply gorgeous video. I so enjoyed watching your process. Thank you for sharing.
I just buy the bone black pigment powder locally for $5 then mix linseed and some spirits
Where is the fun in that?
how long would you say it took for you to make Bone Black paint? From start to finish. How many days or hours?
great vide. I'm curious if you knew bone black during the "incineration" of cow bone creates its own binding agent called Dippels Oil. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dippel%27s_oil was founded by Johann Konrad Dippel. Whats your thoughts on that process?
I did not know that! Interesting!
Saludos Maestro yo desde Honduras le escribo no se inglés pero interesante el proceso que hace en sus vídeos convirtiendo los pigmentos caseros a Oil
Great video and channel 👍
Thank you for showing us the Flemish style. Excellent explanation. From one teacher to another, well done.
There’s a website that goes in depth on this and I keep forgetting it, and having to ask my professor again 🫠
great trick is to soak charcoal for a few days in oil/turpenrine/siccative solution. You can draw a undersketch with it and it will fix itself in one to two days. great method used by old masters.
I starting making my own paint and oil.
