    In the late 80s I went to the Shirokiya in Pearlridge Mall to buy a portable stereo. Seems like the associates did not want to service me because I'm Filipino; it was a Japanese store. I worked at "Restaurant Row" many years ago. It was so vibrant. In the middle of the circular plaza there once stood a whimsical colorful revolving clock. It looked like a toybox. It's now a planter. There were once water features including a waterfall sculpture. I remember some fine restaurants including Black Orchid (jointly owned by Tom Selleck and others), Sunset Grill, Marie Calendars, Rose City Diner (a throwback '50's diner where they gave you toothpicks and a straw to blowdart them into the ceiling), Studebaker's, Beverly Hills Gelato, etc. This was late 80's - mid '90's. Good times.

    In the past 5 years, I've been to the mall 2 times. Both to the only book store left on island. No plans on going back. Order all my books from amazon now. Nothing else I need there anymore. When I was young, the mall used to be the "go to" place. Would spend almost the whole day there. Last time I walked around, over 5 years ago, it's all for the tourist. No local stores. Kind of like the whole state. locals being pushed out by transplants. Wonder how long it's going to last when the tourist stop coming????

      They are good too and cheaper but they no longer serve their famous mussels black bean and their once incomparable jai is stuffed with long rice and half of the ingredients they once use to put in the dish. And, they throw the long rice in underneath gravy and when you get it home to eat, it’s still hard and not cooked. They used to be my go to after leaving Go,den Duck but now, I’m back to Golden Duck and their wonderful sauces, fat juicy shrimp and tender beef dishes.

    Happy Days used to be our favorite dim sum place, however the last time we went (about 3 months ago) the quality of the dim sum was missing. They previously came around with carts of hot steaming dishes, at that time, the dim sum was not fresh, it had been stored in an aluminum tower. The fried taro puff was cold, pork hash was cold, the lo mai gai was cold and not tasty. Very disappointing and I would not recommend that place to anyone. Hopefully they have changed their service back to the old way and serve freshly steamed, warm/hot food again. There are several dim sum places from which we can choose from and with the service we had a couple of months ago I choose not to choose them again.

    • @BluesReviewsHI
      @BluesReviewsHI 14 днів тому

      Sorry to hear about your bad experience. I can only speak about this visit since it has been about a year since we last dined here. We tried other places in the last year such as Meisum, Nice Day, and Kapiolani Dim Sum that opened in Downtown. The carts came as soon as my family sat down. I took some video for a moment outside and came as my wife was ordering. The hot dog was the only thing that was not that warm, but all the steamed stuff (shrimp & chives, half moon, pork hash, char siu bau) came out steaming and was too hot for the kids to eat right away. My wife burnt herself brushing her arm near the tea pot. Tea pot is now larger and metal vs white porcelain/ceramic pot from before and was very hot. Perhaps we came a little after 10am and things were just prepared? Though this is my favorite spot, especially for the half moon, my wife prefers the one on the mauka side of the Chinese Cultural Plaza. Thanks for the comment! It is good to let others know both sides. Oh, the shoyu bottles changed to a sort of bigger Aloha Shoyu bottle/dispener which did not dispense well. We usually get the taro puff, but my wife did not order it this time. Some of the workers were familiar from years ago.

      I’ve been to Happy Day and was fairly unimpressed too. But their sister restaurant called, Nice Day is crowded out the door. Order by phone unless you like waiting an hour. I pre order take out and drive there in Liliha. They do not pile their old stuff into boxes. They make my order fresh. How do I know this? I was there once and watched them put it together. After you order, they put the whole order through to the kitchen and you get the fresh stuff. If I eat there the food is always hot. If you want, order it from the kitchen not the cart and they will happily oblige. 10% discount for cash. Winnahs! The waitstaff is so accommodating and always rush to please. Always. They’re the best dim sum place in the area. Better than some sloppy places downtown.
