How a family of 4 otters make themselves right at home on our lot.
This family of otters have been visiting our lot for a month or so. We caught them on our Blink Camera. This is the first time we saw them eating a fish on the steps to the creek. A Blue Heron also took note and ran the Otters off so it could eat the fish.

    I tried to build on a Trail, once my order came in. It never arrived. Deposit on a second one that was in transit from the plant, nope, sill no updates. Buyers' remorse happens to everyone, on every big luxury purchase but you're on the downstream challenges of the build. How did they address your recalls, given the issue of no direction from Ford to the Dealers on what they should do for the fixes?

      I have finished my build and am VERY happy with the outcome. I’m working on the tour video now. As far as the recalls, they are still not addressed but, I haven’t had any issues with them at this point. I’m not really sure how they are going to address them. Having the unresolved recall is annoying. That said we love our van.

  • @rongreen7308
    @rongreen7308 8 місяців тому

    Howdy. I've been watching your build. You seem to have the water tank and heating system wired good but what concerns me is the power being drawn from your alternator. A lot of power is drawn from the alternator to run the hot water heater. I forget if you have a lithium battery or not but they charge fast. This means you have to make a lot of power very quickly. Alternators dont just turn and produce power. Any big current draw regardless if it is lithium or not can cause an alternator to overheat easily to the point that it glows red or catches fire. You can limit this by only using it to warm the water when needed but you dont want it to run for 6 hours like you mentioned. Maybe use a generator or shore power when you get there. I would not want to prematurely wear out my alternator in the desert, wilderness, Canada, etc and not be able to get back home. Do you know where the consumer connection port is? After I look into it a little more I will probably wire a switch operated solenoid between my battery bank and my starter battery to give myself a jump if I need it. My whole house system runs off my three 100 amp/hour Renogy batteries and they are completely seperate from anything Ford put in my van. This way I wont void any Ford warranty and I am assured my van will start without blowing up my alternator or draining my starter battery. I currently have just a 200 watt solar panel but will likely upgrade in the future. IUt powers my lights, tv, seperate house stereo, micrtowave, and electric skillet. So far it does a good job. I do have a 300 watt inverter connected to the CCP (consumer connection port) in the unlikely event that I cannot charge my batteries with my combination of my shore power or generator powering my fully automatic NOCO 20 amp charger and my solar panel. So far, just the one 200 watt panel has been enough with normal sunlight. I may add a second panel just in case. My van is set up to run either a large cooler or my small dorm fridge. I have not yet run the fridge on a long trip but I have recently purchased an MPPT controller that will help a lot. You mentioned the engine could heat your water. That requires no work from your alternator. I suggest you look into that option or a shorepower/generator type source and maybe the inverter/solar system, rather than the alternator being used so hard. They are expensive and hidden in a not so neat location, not to mention a jump or tow to get you moving again. FYI, I appear to have been around a little longer and have worked as a mechanic and being a gearhead is my hobby, so I have some knowledge of this stuff. Give it a try. I dont want to see anybody stuck miles from nowhere with a huge bill. Good luck.

    • @goldenadventurers
      @goldenadventurers 8 місяців тому

      Thank you for the large comment. I’ll see if I can address all of it here. 1st I may have not been clear on the water heater discussion. We only had the water heater on for about 30 minutes. Then with the insulation and the design of the water heater it was still warm after 6 hours. We have a 60 amp DC-DC charger connected to the 175 amp CCP. It also has a ford installed relay and only kicks on when the van is running. We are using a 400ah Renogy Battery for our power. I do have some solar panels on my camper but, at this point I don’t think the way we plan to use our van we will need anything other than the DC-DC for charging. We don’t really think we will be sitting with the van parked for days.

    • @rongreen7308
      @rongreen7308 7 місяців тому

      @@goldenadventurers Ahh! Very good. I didnt recall a mention the 175 amp CCP previously, so I figured you only had the one alternator. Pretty sure the 175 has the two alternator system, right? Anyway, good job on the van. Looking forward to seeing it completed. They take time. Mine is a 2021 Transit 250 that we got in Nov of 2021 due to the chip problem. Its mostly complete now but I still have some things I want to do. No 80/20 in ours. No 175 amp CCP either. Budget build that looks good. People stop us all the time and inquire about it. I reconnected with a friend at a KOA last weekend and he said he was jealous of my van. That really made me feel proud since he sold his conversion van to buy his new 21 foot Hideout camping trailer. Everybody likes it but I never had somebody tell me they were jealous, and he mentioned it twice also. Happy travels. Looking forward to more of your videos.

      Thank you. Dumping on the ground at a campground is probably not the best idea one might have. However I can understand someone who might feel it is okay since they may see it as just like washing their hand or brushing teeth with a small amount of water and just tossing in the ground. When you have 5 or 10 gallons of water, that makes an impact on the area.

      The anker was just had it in the van till I could move the Renogy battery from our camper. We took the van out before we had the Renogy battery in and we used the Anker to provide power for our lights, heater and 120 volt temporarily. So weird..we also purchased the Anker for our transit. Trying to decide if we can get by on just the Anker or will we need to upgrade to more power? • @goldenadventurers
      @goldenadventurers 9 місяців тому

      @@The3wheelin we have the 767 model with the 200 ah. it depends on how you are going to pull power. Obviously it has the 120 volt plugs. Each 12 volt plug supports 10 watts each so you could do what I did for a bit, and put in a 12 volt fuse block to distribute 12 volts throughout the van. If you connect both 12 volt plugs you will have 20 amps available. I did this to run my heater and lights and worked great. I also used the 12 volt plug in the back of the van to charge the Anker when driving. It doesn’t charge fast since there isn’t a lot of power from that plug. The Anker 767 is a beast. Many people do great with 200 amp hours of power.

      Thank you. I don’t get to fly fish nearly as much as I wanted to in the past few years but, I hope to get a lot more this year with the van. Regarding this hike, we didn’t get to Ice Berg lake which is a little bigger but, I will next time. I was surprise at the fish in this little lake. Me and my dog Gia loved it.

    I really like that Transit Trail model. One question, did you account for any airflow under your flooring? Just like in a house a mobile home needs to breathe as well. The worst thing you can do is seal it up too tight, whether it be floor, ceiling or walls. Not sure if you’ve heard of the UA-camr Humble Road but he talks about accessibility and airflow quite often in his videos. He’s got a lot of good time saving information on his channel. I look forward to seeing the progress on your RV and your adventures ahead. Best wishes.

      Yes, I’ve seen Humble Road and saw his video about the air flow. I have to admit I didn’t go out of my way to make sure there is as much airflow as he discussed. That said, the minicell fits in the valleys but doesn’t completely fill the space. Mostly it helps to level out the valleys

    Birch plywood has no waves in it. It's used as furniture grade framing for cabinets! It's 7 or 9 layers thick.

      @goldenadventurers 10 місяців тому

      Yeah, I may have misstated the plywood I was talking about. “Normal plywood is often not very flat.

    • @CONTAINERMAN68
      @CONTAINERMAN68 10 місяців тому

      @goldenadventurers I use plywood all of the time and never notice it being wavy? I mean yes, the thinner stuff is sometimes. Like Luan board, that's 1/8" to 1/4" thick. I suppose other thicknesses from 1/4" to maybe 1/2" might be. But anything above 1/2" isn't usually wavy. There's also different grades you can buy, too. A-A, that's great in both sides knot free, A-B some imperfections, A-C more imperfections like knots, A-D lots of knots. Those imperfections are on the B, C, & D side. A side is always knot free and super smooth. But the OSB will work great for when you lay your tile. It was probably way cheaper than the Birch or even just regular plywood. Good luck with your build!

    Understand that you ordered in November of 2022 - when did you take delivery please? My dealer is telling me 12 weeks. Realistic?

      We took delivery the last week of January 2024. Of course there may have been lots of supply chain issues that may now be resolved. Our local dealership actually received another trail transit and maybe 3 or 4 other transit 350s about the same time.

    Awesome!! That is the van I would like to buy. What about MPG ? Can you explain if you had any issue with insurance? I just subscribed!!

    • @goldenadventurers
      @goldenadventurers 11 місяців тому

      The van is brand new and need some break in. That said, it is currently getting about 15 MPG, probably 60/40 highway/city, and of course it is empty. I had an expedition for a few years and in the early days I would get upper teens in mpg on the highway and when I traded it in it had 53k miles and would get 21 mpg on highway travel. They have the same engine but, the van is obviously a lot less aerodynamic. I’ll for sure keep updating the mpg info. as time goes by.

      Hello Hello I got the Transit Trail in my drive way now !!!🎉🎉🎉 Now we are in the same boat trying to figurout our best options to build this awesome van!! . Quick question I notice that the 3rd high mount brake light is on all the time during the night. When I press the brake only the 2 side tail light bright more at night and the high mount brake light it just on with 3 LED. May you check if the high mount brake light on your van is brighter when you press the brake or it just on all the time? @@goldenadventurers

      Congratulations!! We absolutely love our van. I do drive it in Eco mode most of the time in an effort to get better mpg. Not sure if it is working. We absolutely love our van and I’m sure you will too. Mine does the same. Maybe it is just a running light up there and not brake lights.

      It is the high roof. We test drove a mid roof and while it was tall enough for us to stand, we wanted to make sure we had roof to sit up straight comfortably on our bed.

      @@mikelabree absolutely! The van is 76 inches floor to middle of the roof. Obviously it is slightly curved down on the edges. I think we will be “loosing” about 3.75 inches total with our floor and the ceiling. So it would be close for you in our van.
