The IWK Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that raises funds to support IWK Health-the largest pediatric hospital and trauma centre in Atlantic Canada. IWK Health is also one of only two health centres in Canada that cares for both women and children.

Our hearts are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend Spencer MacKay.
Spencer was an IWK icon who literally grew up in front of all of us. He was a fixture on the IWK Telethon as he and his mom, Rebecca, courageously shared his life journey from his first days in the IWK’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to graduating from university to his successful career as a film producer. Spencer truly defied the odds and demonstrated strength, resilience and an unmatched passion for living each day to its fullest.
His smile was infectious, his laugh contagious, and he brought sheer joy to everyone who had the privilege of spending time with him. He was humble and grateful for the opportunity to bring hope to others while sharing his positive spirit and zest for life. We watched and cheered as he broke down barriers for those living with a disability, and his feisty determination undeniably paved the road for his tremendous success and accomplishments.
Spencer’s warmth, charisma and humour touched everyone who met him, and we are so honoured to have been welcomed into his life and to share his incredible story over the years. And it was incredible!
While the memories are plentiful, one that stands out for all of us is when Spencer took his very first steps on the IWK Telethon. It was a beautiful moment to witness for everyone there, including his good friend Steve Murphy - with whom he shared a strong bond. Spencer’s friendship with Steve and the entire CTV team blossomed over the years, and he became a dear friend that they truly cherished.
Collectively, we were humbled to be part of his many amazing milestones and achievements.
Spencer represented the IWK Foundation in 2005 as the Children’s Miracle Network Champion Child. He, along with his family, shared their personal IWK journey-raising awareness and inspiring others. We were so proud to showcase Spencer’s story as we knew the lifelong impact he would have on patients and families experiencing similar struggles and experiences.
We are all the better for having known Spencer and are committed to ensuring that Spencer’s extraordinary story will continue. Rebecca, Spencer is our champion, and his legacy will bring hope and inspiration to us, now and always.

In 2019, Jonas went into kidney failure at three years old and needed emergency dialysis. He would then go on to need and receive a kidney transplant. Both times having access to an anesthesia machine was critical. The IWK urgently needs new anesthesia machines. When Ruvi and Nash’s first child, Anotipa (Ano) Mugara, was born prematurely at just 27 weeks and 4 days, he weighed only 1 pound 14 ounces. He was born via an emergency C-section and was immediately taken to the IWK’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced medical care and observation.

Oh my. I have loved this song..and decided what I will do with these hands of mine, will be to learn to play it..spread the word..share the message. I have watched three or four versions of this song, but this one made me bawl...I lost a grandson two years ago at the age of 4.5 yrs. He fought a two yr battle...hard. We all did ...at the iwk.
