My husband and I prefer Sawgrass Recreation Park that is located in Weston, FL. It is about a few miles south of Everglades Holiday Park. We went a few weeks ago and saw 6 alligators and one of them was an alligator protecting it food of a dying alligator.

He's not an Alligator Snapper. He is a common snapper, the former is endangered, the latter not.

As a 5th. generation Floridian I’m wondering where”Florida” man is originally from.

I have encountered snapping turtles on roadways before. I was able to safely pick them up and carry them across in the direction they were facing with no issues. They are heading across the road for a reason (I suspect females may be heading to or from a location where they lay eggs) so do not try and turn them around. You just have stay away from the business end.

In my family we call it ‘turtle patrol’ because those guys don’t stand a chance crossing the road.

They leave the ponds to lay eggs at this time April and May every year.

It might have been a female wanting to go lay it's eggs somewhere across the road in the direction it was heading. It might try again to get across the road.

I had a similar situation. What worked for me was not to push the turtle, but get him to grab the stick and pull him forward.

Turtle was like "I'm a champion of Earth. I can take on any truck!" You saved it's life with it going "thunk" back to it's home. Lol

I think that's a regular snapping turtle, not an alligator snapper. As a 9 or 10 year old in the 1960s, buddies and I caught some to sell to this old lady We boiled them and scraped out the meat. She was too kind to tell us we did it wrong. We later found out you can get several different meats out of them. I never did learn the right way to clean them.

Why did the snapper turtle cross the road? Because Florida man was poking him with a stick!

Which direction was he heading when you encountered him? You are supposed to have him continue in THAT direction. They migrate to new ponds. There are safe handling methods. Hatchlings can be picked up by the back edge of the shell. Some people get them on the floor mat of a car and drag the mat. If you have a box and can coax it in, you can carry it to safety.
