I have this lil theory/Headcanon that The Doctor was probably trans during their other incarnation specifically the "first" one because that would explain some quotes like "I played Omega at the academy... Well the girl version of Omega", "it's been I while since I borrowed women's clothes" or Missy's "since he was a little girl" and why they keep unconsciously having masculine incarnation even when those incarnations are non binary like 10, they're so used to be masculine because of their first incarnation being trans that they're a bit lost when they're finally a woman again.

How can Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor be gay? If he, for example, marries a Time Lord, that husband dies and is incarnated as a woman, does the Doctor ask for a divorce?
I assume it works like gender does irl. Time lords have a set of gendered associations they identify themselves with, regardless of their sex. Like, I’m a gay person in a relationship with a trans man, we’re still doing fine, you feel me?
It also appears time lords have a semi consistent sex. Like they’re generally one sex or another for most regenerations, and it only swaps up every once in a while.

And not just for Missy. You could replace her with literally any other Master, the burnt Master, the War Master, literally any other Master and he'd still flirt. In the audio drama Masterful, he flat out tells all his other selves "Let's throw our TARDIS keys in a bowl and see what happens."
I'm sure half of Jodie Whittaker's era was constant reminders the Doctor used to be a man, never mind how many times the topic was brought up in previous eras.

I like the idea that even tho they can change gender, they primarily go for one over the other just out of preference, both the corsair and the general solidified that before the timeless child could suggest the doctor was supposed to have an even number.

@astra6031 Which is why I am puzzled as to why they've wasted a regeneration on a female Doctor when Romana is still around. I'm sure Lalla Ward would have come back to regenerate into another skin. She is a female Time Lady to those who are clueless. She IS the female "Doctor" in a way. And The Rani too. I cannot accept Missy as a regeneration of the Master when she behaved exactly like The Rani.

I love when they call to the fact of how fluid gender is with timelords and I adored every case of 13 having to correct herself and would've enjoyed a few more of those jokes with 14 which makes me even a bit more upset that he was reduced to just to the fact he is male right now at the end of the first special considering that just because he's not female right now that doesn't undo his experiences as a woman. But also I do hope that when we get a female doctor again we can have more of this. Who knows, maybe we'll get a non-binary one eventually, like "Okay usually I can tell once I reach a mirror but this time I seem to be outside of the binary"
