Songline of the Ridgeway : Walking Britain's Oldest Road (Part 3)
Part 4 : The Road of the Dead
A five day journey along that ancient trackway of our ancestors in Southern England called the Ridgeway, sometimes dubbed Britain's Oldest Road.
This is a walk myself, Tamsin and Nero took in June 2024, aiming to get to Avebury Stone Circle for Summer Solstice with all the other revellers, sun worshipers, witches, wizards, gypsies, pagans, druids and hippies.
Along the way we explore the history, folklore, mythology and legends associated with this millennia old dreaming trackway across the storied landscape at the heart of Albion.
Picking up where we left off, we leave the Blowing Stone and journey up to White Horse Hill, Uffington Castle and Dragon Hill, places associated with King Arthur, King Alfred and Saint George and the Dragon.
Then we make it to Wayland's Smithy, a Neolithic Long Barrow and House of the Dead also associated with the Anglo-Saxon god of metal working, (and the Norse Elf) Volund, or Weyland.
Then we make camp for the night.

The Piper's Ghost : A Scottish Folktale
Staying true to your commitments and promises even in the face of prosecution. Power of discipline- a vow of silence for so many years... this is what stands out for me in this story. Also the interesting fact of being devoted to the family you are coming from rather than family you are creating with the partner etc. Seems strange to me she let children be taken from her, but it may be the power of staying in her resolve, maybe staying true to herself- her identity as a princess and sister, loyalty to her own kingdom... Fascinating, multi-layered tale, thanks! You are a great bard! 🌼🦢

Went to my second Pagan Moot last night in Coventry and this is the story we discussed. I told this story to my friend today as we went for a walk through the Peak. District
Love Sheryl Crow
My father was killed in a violent accident at work when I was a baby so I never new him. When I was 8yrs old my family was going through a very unpleasant and traumatic period involving my step father. at this time my father appeared to me in a vision at school one day, very clear and smiling at me. I'd only ever seen black and white photos of him so didn;t immediately realise who this copper red haired young man in a blue boiler suit was until I told my Mum. Since that day, my Dad has been with me. Whenever I call upon him for help or just a chat, he's always been there. I;ve never seen him again but always feel his presence, even now! I do believe in reincarnation, but since our spirit lives on and we never actually 'die' I think each life leaves an echo which is connected like a thread to all of our selves through time .
I'm glad to have had the algorithm suggest your channel as I find these things fascinating. I've seen and felt many things that would pale many a normal person, seen spirits of things that were or have never been, and even seen what lies beyond. The most magnificent I have seen were dragons though, truly majestic beings; wonderous to behold. But what I have learned in my years in this form is that not everything that is can be observed easily, particularly with the eyes, the eyes are deceptive. As with all our senses we are limited, unless of course we help our little brains along or go mad; both work to see beyond.
First of all I just want to say that I LOVE what you're doing here. From the historical components to the spiritual and everything in between. I am on my own quest to learn and apply ancient wisdom from stories and other shamanic avenues. I am reading this book by Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Ph.D. called "Women Who Run With the Wolves" wherein she tells folkloric stories that connect her readers to the Wild Woman Archetype. It is so fascinating to me how many of your stories overlap with those in this book. There is one short yet very comical story in this book about Coyote. It is not entirely "appropriate" but would make for an excellent video, imo. It's called "Coyote Dick", starting on page 369, tho reading the whole chapter that contains it (and definitely the section dedicated to it) gives the story even more depth. At the very least, it's worth checking out. At the most, maybe we will see a video about it. Either way, I look forward to more of your videos. Take care!
Settled down to watch one of your videos whilst threading my rowan berries for the coming year and this was perfect!!
i've seen a black and white checkerboard jester on shrooms once...

Demons. You're talking about demons. Be careful.
I'm seeing the devil card as being chained to false beliefs, change them to free yourself. Enjoying your take on these stories.😊
Very happy to have found ur content
As am I. Welcome aboard!
As kids my sister and I would be encouraged by my dad to eat bread and cheese, hawthorn sprouts. I remember the taste as slightly bitter and not as good as bread and cheese.
“Not as good as bread and cheese” pretty much sums it up 😂
I saw sopa de pedro on the menu in a portuguese restaurant and looked into the story. Thanks for this tale.
Bloody brilliant 🐐🐐🐐
Egil is still a strong Icelandic name. The G is seldom pronounced in Icelandic. The L in Egil is pronounced like the double L of Welsh (with a soft click). So Ei-ilck.
There's a colony of gnomes that frequent north Florida, near to and on the banks of the Suwannee river, at a place called The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park. The place hosts music festivals, several each year, and they are an experience that is hard to describe. You can go and stay on the outside, hear the music and see the crowd, smell the campfires, but there's also a threshold you came enter through if you can let go. There's a powerful energy to the place that magnifies and reflects the energy you bring. It can be an amazingly beautiful place that you'll never want to leave and will forever find your way back to, or it can be horrifyingly traumatic. It's really up to you. I married my wife there, in front of that ancient river and it's children the live oaks. If you ever make it to this side of the pond you would be most welcome there.
I love this, thank you 🙏
I’d like to Be-a-CROW this years….
How the actual fornication is your channel this slept on? I have come to understand the hyperbole of folk tales and how it can translate into being. As always thank you for the content! P.S: its really cool that your last/family name translates to storyteller and ever that be true!

Thank you so much. In your telling of the alder, you bring together all my interests, folklore, history, ancient history and archeology, and folk magic... even the gundestrup cauldron. You hit all points and put them together. I am grateful!
I like your rowan description. I asked for a piece of rowan and made a lovely little stick with the ogham symbol marked into it with a soldering iron. I treasure it. A thought came over me today to ask for other tree bits, I always carry a Swiss Army Knife with a delicious saw and also the humility to ask for cuttings from trees. I live very close to a large woods where I've seen all sorts of lovely trees, in sodden Lincolnshire.
It really puts you in a more responsive state with the trees eh, eying them up for oghams and asking them nicely for permission 🥰🌳
The weird thing is. once on a psilocybin trip when i meditated and quieted my mind I heard a voice in my head saying eat.... Eat air... I laughed and started breathing the way it wanted and before you know it I felt my body get tingly and very light like I was floating, then next thing I knew I was in a place in my head slowly going down beneath the ground and I could see the dirt and root systems going throughout the soil but to my left looked like bark and the trunk of a big tree that kept going down all the way to the bottom. And there was a horned man meditating at the base of a tree. Eyes were just white and he was in the shadows so hard to see much. But just thought I would share that. It felt kind of earie and it was dark, I felt scared but kind of welcomed.
Love this, and I can really relate 😂 Thanks for sharing 🙏
Moral of the story: do not go to family gatherings :D
😂
I would really love you to look into the older caucasian myths. While living here i have discovered many connections to older stoties. It was in the caucasus pushkin wrote down the russian folktales, which he says he got from the cat who guards the tree.
I will do, I love them, just bought a couple of collections of Russian folktales actually
I love this version and this story of yours keep coming up like I haven’t heard it before 🧵🧵🧵at the end, the changing animals, I always think of young Merlin in that Disney movie warring with the ‘Baba Yaga’ in there!
The sword and the stone?? Hell yes I remember that!
@@TheStoryCrow I think I used to own the VHS! Honestly, this is so great! Thank you so much! 😁
Found you totally randomly, thank you UA-cam algorithms LOL! Really really interesting documentaries and they way you tell the tales. I never realised how much I loved trees. Condolences for your loss. I hope the trees and the spiritualism they represent bring you comfort and strength.
They do 🙏🌳 Thanks for dropping in, and hail the algorithm goblins! 👹
Your channel is a favorite. Thank you for sharing lore and bringing wonder and charm☆
Thanks for the kind words my friend 🙏😊
oddly enough, there seems to be a lot of crossover among many, if not all pre-Christian European cultures; which makes me curious about tracing their origin point and time, or as close to it as possible. I just found your channel and look forward to seeing if you have anything that can help in that regard. What I find most interesting is that there seems to be some kind of clear break from the more middle eastern and definitely African concepts of Gods, i.e., not being Thunder based.
Hey and welcome! Yeah I’ll be doing more ‘deity tracker’ videos. There’s a few on there, mostly under the umbrella of ‘indo European’ but with some caveats. I’d say the horned god for eg is pre IE
Coolest vid ever! New sub 🌳🌳🌳
Cheers, and welcome. Plenty more bark and leaves here 🌳
Quit meeting goblins...
NEVER!
Thank you for taking us along, the land of my ancestors! It is very magical there :)
Hi i found your channel a couple of days ago and im really enjoying the videos on tree mythology Im a tree surgeon and its so interesting to see how the characteristics in the myths correspond to the physical features and properties of the trees. And how the personality that i 'made up' for the trees in my own head also is in line with the myths...very Jungian collective subconscious vibe 😮😁
Yeah the cross over between biological and folkloric information always astounds me, as someone who also cuts off bits of tree for a living
I see the Diplomatico bottle with the candle. You have great taste in rum

Shadow . The part of us we hide repress and deny 😮. Slains hill in Meath . That's the place of St P's Beltaine fire. If you look at St P's Breastplate or called the Lorica .... its 100% Elemental / Pagan / Shamanic.
Thanks for that, yeah totally agree
Alder in Scots ghaidhlig is. Fearn or Fearna as in Auldfern the place the river of Alders An bhidheo uabhasach innteach.
Wow thank you for the connection of the Indo-European civilization. That, that was Yogic. That, that was Celtic. Are they different?
The Indus seal is much much older. But the imagery is strikingly similar eh?
Very well delivered…
In Scots ghaidhlig it is called Coll as in the island of Coll it is the third letter in the alphabet
