As you can tell, I didn't have my surgery on 01/03/16 - it's now booked for 23/03/16. I'm sorry this seems like a dramatic video - I wanted to capture how I feel at the moment. When I watch my videos from a few months ago, I can see how much more energy I had & I wonder if I'll ever feel that way again!! Hopefully in the future I'll be able to look back at this video and remember the time I was...

    Had a volvolus too, due to meckel diverticulum (was born with that apparently), appeared out of the blue one evening and required immediate surgery. They took out my terminal ileum and ileocecal valve. I'm fine now, though I need to go to the toilet more often than before (due to bile acid malabsorbtion).

    Oh honey if you think you’re in control of your body with your IBD history… Well I got something to tell you. You are not out of the woods. You may think you are but you should know already that IBD is no not well understood by the medical community still. Also, I don’t believe that you have zero insecurities about your ostomy. You wouldn’t be going so hard out of your way to prove otherwise if you weren’t a bit insecure. But go ahead and go on and preach. You’re not gonna reach anybody though with your approach. Nobody appreciates preaching. I wonder, how long have you had your ostomy? And you don’t need to answer me obviously. But we are not all the same. Oh and trust me I am used to my ostomy. I just hate it still. I doubt that will ever change. I’m glad that the surgery saved my life but that’s it. It changed me. I have many PTSD related issues and all of my surgeries have given me some form of PTSD. I just really really don’t like it when people try to tell others how to feel. I pray that you can become more open minded.

      Wow. Just found your comments as I don't post anymote or look at comments anymore. Not sure if you've watched any of my other vids but I explained that I recorded them as a video diary, a way of mapping MY own journey and exploring the thoughts and feelings I was having along the way. If you don't agree - cool, we're allowed our own opinions and experiences. However, there's not really any need to get so angry and start telling me I'm not 'out of the woods' etc.

    SMH. What exactly makes you think that women are buying these products just to please someone else? Of course my partner loves me and thinks I’m sexy no matter what. It’s me that has the problem with it. I want him to see me look beautiful. And I mean beautiful in the way that I used to be when I was able to wear lingerie and feel very pretty and sexy. I don’t want to have to cover up with something baggy and hide my body just because of my insecurities. I want to get past it. These products help with that. I think that your viewpoint is very narrow minded.

    Look girl, I’m glad for your self-confidence but I’ve had my colostomy bag for 11 years now and I’m still not over it. Now the love of my life for 26 years is terminally ill and I’m trying to make him happy and feel good. I can’t do that in regular underwear or lingerie. Your video is judgemental towards the hordes of people that struggle with insecurity over their Ostomy bags. I mean, what the hell is wrong with some thing that would make somebody feel more confident? Just because you’re so confident does it mean that the rest of us are. You’re not spreading Body positivity. We are criticizing those who don’t have enough confidence to do what you do. Sorry but not sorry.

      I'm sorry to hear your son was poorly - I hope he's recovered well from the surgery. I had a small bowel volvulus emergency laparotomy when I was 22. I spent 17 days on the hospital because I developed appendicitis and had to have an additional surgery. I was on suction through my NG tube for so long because of copious amounts of green bile! So horrific! An extremely painful experience and a huge scar as a reminder.

      Aww you're welcome - I'm glad they have been of some help to you :) my last surgery was for a volvulus (twist) of the small intestine, which can be different to just a blockage (e.g. food getting caught in the small intestine) - I was back to work within around 7-8 weeks, so not too bad. I know it made me feel very confused and almost unresolved that they couldn't give me a reason as to why it had happened - made me worry if it'd happen again, and made me realise how easily human bodies can go wrong!! Luckily we have the solutions and medication in place for when it does. I hope you have stayed healthy since xxx

      @@jnxzorz22 yes lots of pain from the twisting - I was essentially awake for 3 day rocking back and forth, and the painkillers weren't touching the pain much apart from tramadol (not sure why but morphine doesn't seem to work for me?). Hey. Thanks for posting this video, I’ve found it very useful as am now 2 weeks post-op and again haven’t been able to find much info about recovery, especially for younger people. In regards to your infection I don’t know if I am experiencing something similar as I am in a little bit of pain during the night once my tramadol has worn off and am also finding a bit of discharge from the wound which is white and a little smelly. I completely agree with you however I can also understand the appreciation (more so in a practical way not so much a sexy way) for having products made to help us. Me being single and not having a partner go through my struggles there are times I find myself wondering what if someone does mind my ostomy in intimate moments and me feeling so vulnerable......but then me being me (and where I agree with you 100%) I would toss the guy and not the bag hahaha. I guess like makeup i see benefits with underwear etc aimed for ostomates the same, I don't need them but just simply like them. I don't agree with the approach and what it may imply whether intentional or not, you're right, your body should be attractive because of confidence and appreciation, not product. I would be a hypocrite though if I said I don't want something with the pocket inside and still have a cute look to it. I wish Canada had products to actually choose from, sexy or not! I had ordered a pair from Vanilla Blush to try but didn't care for them :o/ Nothing wrong with them but just not what I prefer and too pricey for me to keep trying. Anyways that's a whole other rant hahaha.

    The way people feel about their stomas is so individual. For me these garments don't increase the way I feel about my body. I am comfy with my stoma and love it to bits. I am waiting for surgery date to get it made permanent.

  • @ThailaSkyeVlogs
    @ThailaSkyeVlogs 8 років тому

    I think some people struggle feeling sexy after such a big change to their body; also, I've heard a few men and women say that it puts their partner off sex, rather than the person themselves, which sucks. For me, I love the Vanilla Blush range from a functional point of view, as I find that it supports the bag when it gets full with that little pocket thing in there, but I don't really use it as a way to hide the bag - couldn't care less about anyone seeing the bag! :D

      +James W no I didn't take any oral steroids for the stump because of the side effects! I took them a lot for my UC before the sub total colectomy.. I did have steroid suppositories and steroid enemas to try to treat it topically but they didn't help much and actually inserting the enema caused bleeding so I stopped using them.. That's why it meant either starting a long term aggressive medication (such as infliximab) or have the proctectomy.. I'm glad I've had the surgery as I know once I'm recovered I'll be UC free! It is a bigger procedure than I expected though >_<

      +kateellenberry Thanks. Yeah that makes me realise that I should get it done most probably, otherwise I will just spend years fiddling around with treatments that either aren't working or aggravating it further. In fact the suppositories do seem to aggravate it and I end up losing blood so seems counter productive. Think its just the kind of surgery it is which is hard to get head around. But probably best to just get it over and done with then move forward again! Such a shame no treatments seem to work for the stump! x

    Blimey! Glad you're finally on the mend now though! Yay! :) Gas and air definitely took me by surprise on Tuesday, that light-headed distant feeling is so weird - thankfully it worked for me (I went through an entire canister!) Tramadol on the other hand made me sick! Blegh! Can't wait to hear how you are in a few weeks x

      I get on well with oral tramadol but the IV tramadol makes me feel horrible too. A nurse I spoke to said it often has that affect! I think I probably just had way too much gas & air all at once.. Hope you feel better soon xx

    Arrrgh! What an ordeal! My proctectomy did not go well either - my large abdominal incision wound opened up, I had problems with the wound VAC I was on, my anal wound opened up after it had seemingly healed. But it does eventually get better! Hang in there!

    • @kateellenberry

      I'm hoping so!! How long did your wound take to heal properly? Xx

    • @VeganOstomy
      @VeganOstomy 8 років тому

      +kateellenberry After two years, I still don't consider it fully healed and I still get bleeding sometimes... I had a lot of complications because of the (defective) wound VAC I was using... :(

      +Vegan Ostomy what is VAC?

    • @VeganOstomy
      @VeganOstomy 8 років тому

      +kateellenberry Literally a vacuum that's supposed to heal wounds! I wrote about it here: www.veganostomy.ca/2014/04/perianal-disease-a-timeline-part-2.html and in part 4, you can see my healing timeline (very graphic BTW).

      +Vegan Ostomy wow I'd never heard of the VAC before! Just read your post - very informative, thank you! Hoping my wound heals quickly :( not been brave enough to have a look since they drained it.. Xx

    I hope you you're feeling better. Fatigue is something that I had no idea would be such a battle! Have you asked your doctor about something to help? Thank you for being so honest and vulnerable! I think it's so important to not just show the good moments, but the bad also! Good luck with your upcoming surgery!!!

      Doctor says my blood tests don't show I'm deficient in B12 so can't give me anything... He asked if I was 'enjoying life at the moment'... Probably because I cried whilst describing how tired I am!

    Thank you for making this most recent video. A lot of people would try to hide this side of themselves, but it's good to remember that we're all human underneath our brave faces. I just came out of the hospital after having an ileostomy reversal (which was initially what brought me to your channel). I'm always disappointed that health care doesn't provide more in the way of "positive motivation" to keep the patient's spirits up as well as their physical health. At home, I have favorite inspiring DVDs, music, and books to lift me up when I need a boost, but at the hospital all you get is a stupid TV they throw at you with game shows and Jerry Springer! What happened to the "Patch Adams" revolution? I never saw that movie, but didn't Robin Williams win the day at the end of the flick, clearing the path for "other" clown-doctors to heal the body as well as the soul? I'm only half-serious with that last bit, but you get my point. I hope your doctors are aware of your ups and downs, and can help you get through this. My wife and I both love your videos and are rooting for you! Get Well!!

      Yeh I've only really been asked by one doctor "how are you doing?".. I wish there was more support provided. There's a lot more focus on the physical rather than mental effects from IBD I think. Hope you're surgery went well!

    • @pheemer
      @pheemer 8 років тому

      Thank you. I'm not quite sure how to post a reply to a reply, but hoping you'll get this somehow. First, I don't have IBD. My ileostomy came about as a result of a burst appendix (last September) and a gangrenous portion of my large intestine needing to be removed. I wore a bag up until 3/3/2016 when I had an ileostomy reversal, and now I'm at home recovering. Some highlights from my hospital stay were: a) in my morphine-induced stupor, it seems like the nurses kept adding pillows to my bed, day after day, until I was lying on a virtual second mattress made of pillows! Finally, one day when I was sitting up in a chair, a nurse made the comment "Wow, you must really like pillows!" I laughed, exhaustedly, and replied "No! I hate pillows! Please, make them stop bringing pillows. I can't sleep with all of these damn pillows in my bed!" b) One day when a nurse was taking my blood pressure, she commented that the second number from my results was a little high, and that the second number is the more important of the two. I asked her what the meanings of the two numbers were, and what the difference was between them, and she replied "Oh, I forget. I used to know it but... that was a while ago." She was serious. c) Another nurse asked me to rate my pain level based on a pain scale going from 1 - 10, and I said, "oh, definitely a 9!" To which, obviously irritated, she replied "There's no way your pain level could be a "9"! Look at the chart! See the diagram?" Indeed, the chart was illustrated with a row of smiley faces displaying a gradual descent from the classic "Happy" face smiley all the way to a grimacing, teary-eyed "Not A Happy Camper" face. "If you were a "9" you'd look like that!" I just laughed, which probably made me look like smiley #1, thus destroying my case for a much-needed dose of pain meds. Anyway, I hope you have better luck with your health care, and finally get that operation ("proctectomy"?) There's a whole world of people suffering (physically and mentally) in hospitals that the general public never sees. That's one of the reasons your videos are so important! Thanks again and Bye!

    I completely understand the fatigue! It really can be debilitating, but it certainly sounds like it's caused by your active illness. I'm really sorry that you've had this surgery rescheduled so many times, but I do think you'll feel much better when it's done. Until then, please hang in there!

    You poor thing!! It's such a struggle :O( I do hope you get some relief soon. Take care and thank you for being so honest of how truly difficult it can be when sickness is constant. Before my ostomy surgery I felt so alone and emotionally depleted, let alone physically, when I was at my worst. Sending hugs and positive energy your way! XO

    I feel the same! I'm so tired every single day. I could just sleep all day everyday. Some days I don't have energy at all. It's so exhausting. Can't wait to have my surgery next month. I hope that after it, I will have more energy. Hopefully you feel better soon.<3

    Oh sweets 😞 I hope this passes for you soon. I think fatigue is very misunderstood by the general public, too, which doesn't help! I think the CCUK had some tips on managing fatigue? - T
