Hello everyone! Here’s another travel episode brought to you by The Sanchez Official. This time we are taking you with us to Monterey Bay Aquarium, considered as a leader in ocean conservation and education.
Nestled on the picturesque coastline of California, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is not only a renowned tourist attraction but also a distinguished research and conservation institution. This aquarium was opened on October 20, 1984, and it was the largest public aquarium in the United States at that time. Its commitment to marine science and ocean conservation has made it a global leader in promoting the protection of marine life and habitats.
Within five years after its opening, it was reported that it was among California's most popular visitor attractions and by 1994, it was the most attended aquarium in the United States.
Holding 1.2 million US gallons, the Open Sea exhibit is the aquarium's largest tank. Visitors look through a very large window into an aquarium containing a school of Pacific sardines. Made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic, its largest viewing window was reportedly the largest aquarium window in the world when it was installed in 1996. Unlike traditional aquariums, the Monterey Bay Aquarium employs open-sea exhibits that continuously pump fresh seawater from the bay. This innovative approach creates a habitat that closely mirrors the natural environment of the marine creatures, ensuring their well-being and allowing visitors to witness the beauty of the ocean in its purest form.
By illuminating the beauty and fragility of the ocean world, the Monterey Bay Aquarium inspires advocacy and environmental stewardship. It empowers visitors to become ambassadors for marine conservation, igniting a passion for protecting the oceans and fostering a sense of responsibility towards preserving the wonders of the sea for future generations.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium is home to over 35,000 creatures, representing over 550 species. Beyond its captivating exhibits, the Monterey Bay Aquarium provides a rich array of educational programs and activities for visitors of all ages.
One of the most awe-inspiring features of the Monterey Bay Aquarium is its stunning kelp forest exhibit which is the focal point of aquarium’s Ocean Edge wing. Nearly three stories high this towering underwater forest, complete with swaying fronds of giant kelp and an array of marine inhabitants, provides visitors with a mesmerizing simulation of the enchanting marine ecosystem found in the bay.
One of the must-see exhibits is the colony of African Penguins at Monterey Bay Aquarium. These penguins are entertaining as they waddle and swim. There are several mated pairs and each of them has a name. Make sure you guys don’t miss this exhibit because they are just so cute to watch.
Do you guys know that in 2016 Disney/Pixar animated film “Finding Dory,” this aquarium inspired the design of the fish hospital that the characters visit, and its animals served as models for the film's animated characters.
At the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the sea otters aren't just an attraction; they are integral to a pioneering research and conservation program. By studying and rehabilitating these charismatic creatures, the aquarium plays a pivotal role in the preservation of the threatened sea otter population along the California coast.
From interactive touch pools to behind-the-scenes tours and informative presentations, the aquarium fosters a deep understanding and appreciation for marine life and conservation.
The Great Tide Pool is a special place rich with history and considered to be the heart of the Aquarium.

How’s the parking? and how much is it?
The hotel offers self-parking and valet. We did the self- parking and it is $45 per day.
