Grandpa's 70th Birthday B-17 flight
Переглядів 68610 місяців тому
This was recorded several years back. Granny Rose had gotten Grandpa a flight on a B-17 which was something he had always wanted to do for his 70th Birthday. Camera work isn't the best but it was to celebrate his day not make a pro vid as such.

I have always had a thing about early war British Bombers. They incorporated clever ideas and pushed the design envelope, but by wars start they were outdated. One of these is the Vickers Wellesley which had a short combat service life, but managed to play an important role in the war in the desert. The interwar years was a golden age for aviation. Ideas were tried and there was a huge array of designs. The Breguet 19 is not a very famous plane and it did not see much action, but its place in aviation history is important as it helped to modernize several Air Forces. I'm getting back into the hobby after 40 years off. I've already struggled with PE. IMO, small kits with tiny PE should be avoided for beginners until they (me included!) gain more experience.

      I don't mind PE if its easy. Grills over tank engines or some of the aircraft intakes. Need super glue but otherwise work the same as the plastic part. I am not a fan of PE you have to bend or shape yourself however.

    I'm gonna add my top 10 for 2022: 10: Testers AC-130. Perfect for those who are looking for a new hobby, or just want to try an aircraft model, without fancy details 09: Airfix Tiger 1. Great kit, needs some filler during assembly, and who does not love a good ol' Tiger. 08: Revel Level 2 car kits. Perfect for a NONE military modeler, that is also not looking to get into model railroads. 07: Athearn Bluebox kits. Budget friendly kits, and are perfect for practicing various weathering techniques since most American trains go into various biomes (so you can practice desert weathering, forest weathering, and ocean side weathering without specific kits) 06: Revell Kenworth K100 Perfect for practicing painting & decals, and is again, not a military model. 05: Revell Spitfire. Good plane, easy build, you said it in this video. 04: COBI Prinz Eugen. A building block based kit, and does not require weathering or decals, perfect for those wanting to get into ship building, but at cost. 03:Accurail rolling stock kits. Depending on the kit, you can practice painting, weathering, and decaling your rolling stock. Various kits have different difficulties than others. I personal call them "Build a train" because of how cheap they are, while being very detailed. 02: Revell Space Shuttle. Perfect for beginners in the since that you don't have to do that much in terms of painting, but a good kit to do with a beginners airbrush set, depending on the kit (don't go for the B747 transporter with shuttle, complete "stack", or any with a payload). 01: Air fix BF109 (Starter set version) Budget friendly, and you can get use to painting fine lines (this was my 3rd aircraft model).

    • @GhostModels
      @GhostModels 3 роки тому

      In fairness some of the classic kits are 60 year old now. Certainly helps to track down the originals and not the republished ones with tired molds. But they are certainly not kits that compare to today's one. I am currently fighting with a old 1970's Lancaster from Airfix.

  • @simplebatu

    I finished my Zero on the weekend and pretty much agree with your comments. Love the original plane ... it just looks like a classic fast fighter ... The model is insanely detailed however the landing gear arrangement is rubbish and I was missing one of the small springs that go in the suspension. Decals are nice but too much carrier film as you say.

    • @GhostModels
      @GhostModels 2 роки тому

      I think they have changed the way they do the undercarriage on the Spits and Mustang. It did look to be the weak point of the kit as it appeared to be somewhat convoluted. Sorry to hear you were missing the spring. I am not sure how good Tamiya is with replacement parts if you asked them.

    You are absolutely spot on about tamiya's older zeros. These kits came out in the 70s i believe and in the US you can buy them for 13 bucks... I bought 8 of these kits because they are super cheap and have awesome fit..They truly are better than some newer revell kits.. I have a serious love/hate with revell, but they aren't a Triple A kit maker like tamiya IMO.. Good info friend, couldn't agree more.

    • @GhostModels
      @GhostModels 3 роки тому

      I have to admit I do love new tooled Revell. But full new kits. Not updated parts or old kits released in a new box. Revell like Hasegawa tends to release old kits and go NEW! But when they actually do a total new kit they are decent. I did two of the 1/32 Spitfire II's and for Christmas I built the 1/32 Bf-109 G9 as a present and it was a lot of fun with good fit and very few issues. But I have had more than enough old Revell that have made me want to consider another hobby. The fact Tamiya has 30+ year old kits that do still build really well does speak well of their engineering. 30+ year old Airfix and Revell are a nightmare when released again.

    • @bradleywhit8159
      @bradleywhit8159 3 роки тому

      @@GhostModels To be fair, alot of the Revell kits I have built were the older ones. I just finished a older F4 Phantom kit and F-15 and loved it. It had a few fit issues, and a little clean up, but I'm okay with that, heck thats model building. I also didn't finish an F-14 by Revell that no matter what I did to it, I couldn't get it right and stuffed it back in the box to never be touched again. They are good for the money and I won't pass one up to put in stash, but their newer stuff is better, hard to get sometimes, but I can't wait to get my hands on their new B-29..

    • @GhostModels
      @GhostModels 3 роки тому

      It's when you get say a Ju-88 with all that glass and the clear parts are so used in the mold that they no longer fully form in the mold. Its not a question of fit as much as some of the clear part is missing. By that stage I wish they would retire the mold and give us a retool. As Revell like Airfix have some fun choices but some of them are very old. The B-29 looks to be a interesting kit.

    • @GhostModels
      @GhostModels 3 роки тому

      I have had good luck with Tamiya car kits that are under the 40.00 mark. They tend to be more basic what they call curbside with simple to no engine but are good starter kits. Porsche GT2 Street version was cool from memory. But they have several that are under 40.00 they have some advanced ones too which are more expensive but more complicated. Aoishima make decent kits as well in the car catagory. Stay away from Revell USA and AMT

      @@GhostModels Revell USA has the most advanced catalog though. With enough patience & skills, and if you're careful with you automotive paints (making sure they are plastic compatible), you can get some truly realistic looking cars and trucks. I just finished a Hellcat kit, and had a friend come over (who also works on cars), he said that he wanted to display it in the shop because of how realistic it was. That car was also my 2nd car built, I come from a background of model trains, ships, planes, and armor. The car I built before that was not even a Lamborghini Aventador. Also, keep in mind, those "Skills" I mentioned, are mediocre, I don't even have an airbrush, most of the painting I do is usually done over the course of a month, per kit, unless it's a ship, in which case, I still got 2 to finish, and I started those last year.

      The channel has been around for a little bit. I separated it from my gaming one as that made sense to do that. I don't build tons, mainly a time issue but try to get something done when I can still. I will try one of the Tigers if I can find them. i have not seen them up here yet. I like the Meng kits though they are good. I have had their 410 on my list for awhile now. Might see about it next year. I have my christmas order already for a couple of kits.

    Awesome video and build on the plane. Thank you so much for sharing your talent. Don’t forget to email me a couple pictures so I can include them in the final slideshow. Papadan
