Graduate Fluids Lesson 11D: Observations: Stokes Flow Over a Sphere
Graduate Fluid Mechanics Lesson Series - Lesson 11D: Observations: Stokes Flow Over a Sphere
In this 11.5-minute video, Professor John Cimbala discusses several observations about the Stokes flow (creeping flow) equations, including fore-aft symmetry (or antisymmetry) of the streamlines and velocity and pressure fields. He also compares potential flow and creeping flow over a sphere.
A complete list of the videos, the annotated notes for each video, and the Equation Sheet can be found in this Excel file:
www.me.psu.edu/cimbala/Cengel_Cimbala_book/Supplements/Graduate_Fluids_Lessons_and_Videos.xlsx
The UA-cam playlist containing all the lessons in this Graduate Fluid Mechanics Lesson Series is found here:
ua-cam.com/play/PLQR3QcO-W5hc32zBQiI14HzqEb_y6pIh6.html
These video lessons are intended for use by first-year graduate students taking their first graduate-level course in fluid mechanics. For example, at Penn State our first-semester course is called Foundations of Fluid Mechanics I (ME 521). A second course follows in sequence, typically in the second semester, called Foundations of Fluid Mechanics II. Both of these courses were created by Professor Cimbala. The video lessons and notes closely follow the notes that Professor Cimbala uses when he teaches the course. Except for a few potential notation issues, however, these video lessons may be useful as a free resource at other schools and for anyone wishing to learn about fluid mechanics.

    Professor Cimbala, congrats again on such a high quality content! I’m currently studying a master’s in energy engineering and next semester I must take aerodynamics and turbomachinery. I have no background in mechanical engineering (I am an electrical engineer). Do you think that this video series will help me fill in those gaps and make both courses less of a challenge? I greatly appreciate any feedback from you. Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2025! Let the fun (fluid mechanics) begin! 🎉

    • @johncimbala

      PI 3 is simple because it is just a length over a length. All the other repeating variables drop out. You are welcome to go through the step by step procedure to calculate this PI and you get the exponents I mention in the video for PI 3, which turns out to be epsilon divided by D. Hi Professor, this may be because the fluid dynamics class that I'm taking is specific for environmental flows... but we account for baroclinic production of vorticity as well in the vorticity equation. Is there a specific reason why the vorticity equation you derived doesn't include baroclinic production? Thank you!!

    • @johncimbala

    F bucket on wheel should be positive to conform to the sign convention used throughout and in this example as well. Right?

    • @johncimbala
      @johncimbala 9 днів тому

      The signs are correct. The force of the bucket on the wheel is opposite in sign of the force of the wheel on the bucket. And you need to think in terms of the control volume, not what you think physically, since you can treat the control volume as a "black box" meaning that you can solve the problem without even knowing what is inside. GOD PLANTED BOTH THE MALE GERM AND FEMALE EGG. OTHERWISE HE WOUD HAVE BEEN A DEMIGOD LIKE HERCULES, ACHILLES, PERCUES ETC. SUPPOSEDLY ZEUS CAME DOWN IN A SHOWER OF GOLD DUST AND LAY WITH HUMAN WOMEN. NOT GOD! THE HUMAN BLOOD AND DNA WAS CORRUPTED IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN WHEN THE WALKING TALKING INTELLIGENT MAN SERPANT SEDUCED EVE. THAT IS EXACTLY WHY JESUS HAD TO BE COMPLETELY OUTSIDE HUMAN BLOODLINES. HE WAS ALL GOD IN FLESH FORM.

    My bible says in King James Bible The prophets described this era with the expression, “the lion and the lamb shall lay down together…” But there is a slight, ever so slight, problem with this: the expression, the lion and lamb shall lay down together does not occur in the Bible! My view Adam was fully human, yet he didn't he didn't need male and female chromosomes. And him about being son of David, i don't think it has to be literal since his genealogy from Joseph isn't literal either. The problem i have with option 4 is, did he go back to heaven with a body therefore changing?

    • @johncimbala
      @johncimbala 12 днів тому

      All human beings have the same number of chromosomes (except for Down Syndrome), so I don't follow your line of reasoning about Adam. I obviously take a more literal view of the Bible than you do. Finally, Jesus did go back to heaven but with a resurrected body that was changed from his old body yet still recognizable (still had the scars, for example). We who believe will also receive new bodies that are like that of Jesus. Thank you for watching my video and for your comment. What would the total head loss in the system be (in the context of sizing a pump for application). Would the total head loss be the head loss through the branch with the greatest losses? That way if the pressure at the junction is high enough to overcome the losses through the worst-case branch, then it can also overcome the losses for the other branch?

    • @johncimbala
      @johncimbala 22 дні тому

      It would be the same pump requirement regardless of whether you consider one branch or the other branch or just the junction point. The pump would not know the difference.

    Hello, sir. So, the given is Tee and the inlet volumetric flowrate is Q1= 100 GPM. The oulet volumetric flowrate is required. The inlet diameter d1=d2=80 mm (one of the outlet) and the other one is 40 mm. How do you solve the 2 outlet volumetric flowrate if the only given is Q1 and the diameters, coz there will be 2 unknown.

    • @johncimbala
      @johncimbala 23 дні тому

      As I explain, you solve the two parallel sections independently, pretending that only blue fluid goes through one pipe branch and only red fluid through the other. The key is that the pressure at the tee is the same regardless of which branch you are considering. Thank you for your comment. The issue here is that this sumerged piece doesn´t have rectangular shape, it is triangular. In conclussion, it is a triangular gate which gets hits with a fluid in one of its sides. Can you clear me the path a little, thank you in advance!

    In the iterrations example (2nd example), why is the minor loss coefficient of the oulet 1.05? How did you assume that the flow is turbulent without knowing Reynolds number initially?

    • @johncimbala
      @johncimbala Місяць тому

      Ahhh... good question. You don't know beforehand. So, you must choose laminar or turbulent and then go through the analysis. At the end, calculate Re and see if your assumption was correct or not. I did exactly that in Lessons 08D and 08E with a different example. I assumed laminar but found out that it was turbulent. Then I repeated the problem as turbulent. Thank you for your comment.
