I was just admiring how posh and technical your dash looked when you called it basic! I have a tin dash on my old girl. Regarding the fuel figures those idiots journalists produce. Up to around 100kmph, the fuel consuption gets better as we us higher gears. After 100kmph a bow wave of air starts to form in front of all vehicles. The drag caused increases exponentially as we increase speed after 100. Now, factor in the high drag coefficient of the 70 series. If these idiots who can't open the fuel flap drive the 70 series at normal car speeds, 120 lets say, then they will only achieve 20 per 100

I really appreciate the honesty in your video, it's dissapoiting to see the "influencers" pushing the false information out to the public, shameful really, so many of them got on that bandwagon, makes me wonder what they were paid to promote what they surely knew was bullshit, not to mention the comments regarding the power comparison, if 4 cylinders are matching the power of V8, what's the longevity of the 4 cylinder in comparison to the V8..

Thanks for your support, I don't understand why a 2.8 motor that has never been in a vehicle rated to tow 3.5t suddenly can without stretching it to the limit. I guess time will tell but I would rather be towing with my old reliable technology. Also don't understand why they just didn't stick the 300 series engine in the 70.

While the 2.8 is proving to be a good motor, there is a lot of gaslighting about the V8. I have owned a Fortuner, and while the 2.8 was good, the DPF issue was s pain in the backside until it was finally replaced. I have now settled for the long term on a 2009 200 series, and glad I did. In stock form (sahara), it gets between 11.5 to 12.5 l/100km with 320,000km on the clock. As smooth as a Swiss watch, it is so superior to the 2.8, its hard to describe. Stick to the V8 while they are still legal.

It really takes a special kind of cognitive dissonance to believe that a 40+ year old vehicle like this is a good deal for $95,000. Any objective analysis of these old 70 series vehicles would tell you they are not worth more than about $40,000. Toyota would have recouped their design & tooling costs decades ago. I'll bet my house their production costs are very, very low. So every time you succumb to the cultural horseshit around these old tractors, and you hand over $95,000+ you're being scammed. Toyota is laughing at you. Their profit margins would be off the scale. I'm sure the executives in Tokyo cannot believe we pay their asking price. They are the single worst value vehicle on the market. You get so little for so much money - and the only "reasoning" you have is the badge on the bonnet. The people that buy these value the "membership" to the LandCruiser club more than they value sound economics. As someone who has no particular brand loyalty, it's fascinating watching this whole weird Aussie obsession with these old shit boxes. It's like paying an extra $1 million for a house in a suburb with a median price of $900k. Insanity.

You said it. 40+ years old. What you get is longevity which effectively makes them better value for money than anything else on the market. We picked ours up in February. It's the newest of our four landcruisers, the oldest being 53 years old. There's nothing with electronics on it that will last that long. It's disappointing that the new 76 has some electronics but it's going to outlive us so again, better value for money

All I see in this video is a dilusional man trying to convince himself that he has a good vehicle. Maaate, hill start assist was on 4x4's 20 years ago at half the price. You've bought an under performing over priced slug. It may be still on the road in 30 years time but only if you keep pumping money into maintenance. The tech is already 30 years old, so in 30 years time who wants to be driving around in 60 year old technology. 70 series Land Cruisers are for knuckle draggers.

Ive owned every model landcruiser including 5 79 series v8. They all did between 10.7-11.5 average except my 2020 dual cab. It went from 11 to 16 litres per 100. I got no help from toyota. I can say the gearbox didnt feel “right” and i had issues with the clutch from 5000k. Due to covid it did no towing and nil load carrying. So there was no “lifestyle” changes. Anyway i got the shits and sold it. Bought a hilux to try the 2.8 with the auto before I buy a 4 cyl 70. So far the reviews are good My hilux does 9.1/100 which is about the same as the 300. Still have a 1979 FJ45 with genuine 113,000k… it does 18-20 litres per hundred regardless of load/weather/flat or hilly 🤣🤣🤣

I recently did a trip towing my 2.5t caravan from Brisbane down through Young/ Mansfield/ Phillip Island/ Cooma/ Canberra/ Oberon/ Brisbane (4600 km and lots of hills) and averaged 16.6 l/100km. I read about owners getting 25+ l/100km towing and can only think they push it alot harder than I do but each to their own. I also have just completed the bottom half of the Canning stock route South to North and averaged 15L / 100Km. The car is basically bog standard with no tune. You put the exhaust on afterwards, it's a YOU problem. Stone stomper should vet who they sell too , clearly your stupid.

Very educational video, I thought it was just millennials that blame others when they fuck up.

Wow, thank you so much for your kind words. Not sure where in the video I blamed anybody, nor pointed out a stuff up. The video was merely pointing out to anyone with an after market exhaust, and a 200 series landcruiser, that they need to make allowances when fitting a stone stomper system. I am guessing you have none of these hence your lack of understanding of the problem. It is interesting though that at least stone stomper did take notice of the problem and now when you place an order you not only need to supply specific measurements and photos of your hitch, they point out that an aftermarket exhaust should have a turn down modification done. Thanks again for watching and your misguided comments.

If this is being used primarily for touring with a caravan, where’s the value in running bigger wheels and tyres? Bigger rolling resistance and unsprung weight? Just curious but love the car!

Thanks for the feedback. The car came with the wheels and tyres fitted by original owner. His wife also hated it and he traded it on a 300 series. Had 1600 klms on it when I bought it. Yeah probably adds to fuel usage but worst I have had so far is 17.3 ltrs per hundred so not worried at all

The 2.8 has more torque and hp than the V8. Its also not the same spec as a prodo/hilux.

I’m a Toyota Mechanic If your gonna tow with a cruiser tow in 4th as it’s a 1:1 ratio if you load in 5th it will drop the revs buy it will load the gearbox up you could down the track upgrade the suspension to handle the weight of your van it will be more comfortable when it’s on also you can get a throttle controller which has settings of normal up to instant throttle reaction and do a nice multi map tune with different settings also clear view has mirrors that you can get that are normal and you can pull out for towing

Thanks for all the tips mate, appreciated. Only problem is I am not allowed to spend any more money, that that I have any to start with. I did a lot of mods to my 200 series and that's what started this whole story as Toyoda said I had voided warranty so now hesitant to do anything much. Thanks for your input

I envy your manual gearbox. My Minister for War purchased herself an MUX to go with her upgraded 21.5 van...but I'm the muppet that has to do the towing...and I absolutely despise the hooer of a thing!!! It's in and out of top gear like a dog with two willies...and don't even get me started on all that Driver Assist crap. This 66 year old grumpy old coot just wants plugs and points, a manual gearbox, manual windows, and a key that you turns. Love your videos brother!

I left a message on your last video. We tow with a 76 V8 too:) I laughed watching your wife’s reaction when you asked about the ride comfort and noise because my wife was exactly the same, but she got used to it after a few trips. I hope things go the same way for you:) The fourth gear is apparently much stronger than fifth due the design of the gear box. Our preferred speed for comfort, and, wear and tear to the gear box is around 85 or just under, in fourth gear (unless we’re in a single lane with traffic behind us, then keep up with traffic), but I can understand it’s too slow for many. You clearly love your new truck. Great choice. Congratulations:)

Thank you for you comments. Not sure the old girl will ever come around but atleast she hadn't refused to come with me. I previously had a 2015 79 series. I towed in 4th in that but this just feels so happy in fifth on flat. Thanks for watching the videos.

We tow a 21 ft long, semi off road caravan with a 2020 76 Series V8 and I love towing with it. I tow in fourth gear and coast in fifth. I love touring with a swag in it, getting off the bitumen or just driving to work. Luxury and getting to our destination at speed limits was not a priority for us. We’re pretty relaxed when we travel. My wife had a few words to say about the ride and noise initially, but she’s fine with it now. We both love going away in it. These trucks really grow on you. They’re ugly, but beautiful at the same time:) They are very tough and reliable. Pure functionality. After parking your van, you can truly explore. These are very capable off road. If others think there are better options, let them buy those vehicles. We all buy what suits us the most. No vehicle is perfect for all our needs. I can’t imagine selling mine until I can no longer drive, and at 64 years old, I hope it’s not any time soon:) You made a great choice👍Congratulations with your purchase. These may cost a little more to buy and accessorise but they sure keep their value and last a lot longer than most other 4x4’s.
