Richard Voaden - Recoheat's most prolific installer!
We visited Devon and met up with the fantastic chimney sweep and installer Richard Voaden, who has installed more Recoheat units than anyone else in the whole wide world! He shared his experience fitting Recoheat units and his customers' delight at the heat pumping out.
Many thanks to Richard for being such a great partner to us. His transformation is in seeing our system as an integral part of the work of a stove, and it makes such a difference to his customers - and to our mission to reclaim the flame and make stoves much more of a primary heat source to spread warmth, reduce CO2 emissions and significantly reduce our customers' fuel bills.

I went to Greenock to see Billy, who's been running a Recoheat on his stove for a couple of years. He does so in an incredibly efficient way, burning the majority of the time without a flame. The secret to this method is the fact that he cleans the flue in the morning by running the stove really hot to burn off all the creosote that will have accumulated in the previous 24 hours. I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure I know "PISH" when I hear it. There is no way that thing is sending heat out of my living room into my kitchen and up my stairs to my bathroom and 2 bedrooms and for that reason, I'M OUT 😂

    • @Recoheat
      @Recoheat 10 днів тому

      No need to take our word for it - take a look at our Trustpilot reviews. It may not work in your house, but generally we wouldn't have a problem heating a two bedroom house with a staircase. We're exploiting the convection flows, and the stairwell acts as a chimney, so it will generally be very effective.

      Wonder why you'd say that? You'd normally offer such criticism on the basis or some knowledge at least, but obviously have no experience of the Recoheat and no intelligent understanding of the choice of stove - as indeed there could be no expectation that you might have. But thanks for stopping by. If you read the comments from happy customers, you might even learn something!

    Is there a product that can redirect heat backwards instead? For example, we have a log burner located in our living room, positioned in the middle of the house. We'd like to transfer heat from the fireplace backwards through the wall it is against into the hallway on the otherside, which would help distribute warmth more effectively throughout the rest of the house. I know we could turn the recoheat around, but that would leave the piping visible in the front.

    • @Recoheat
      @Recoheat 24 дні тому

      Quite a few people do that, and use painted 10mm copper to make it a bit less unsightly! We don't sell a separate product because it does make the device inherently less effective because you're losing the radiant heat that the unit usually entrains and distributes. But it does work - one chap phoned to say it has been heating his kitchen for two years, and others have it into corridors as well as rooms.

    How do you clean the flue with a Recoheat fitted ?

    • @Recoheat
      @Recoheat 24 дні тому

      As normal: the coil has an internal diameter of 60mm so it will take professional brushes including traditional and rotary. The only ones it doesn't take are the cheap plastic-headed ones, unfortunately: they go up but don't like coming down because the 50mm plastic heads are too wide.

  • @freeforester1717
    @freeforester1717 27 днів тому

    Apart from the extra heat output, would there be any disadvantage in fitting two units within a single new-build flue? I'm sure there would still be plenty of otherwise potentially lost heat that could be recovered from fitting another unit, say half to one metre further up the flue, this would be in a large, vaulted ceiling room.

    • @Recoheat
      @Recoheat 24 дні тому

      Thanks very much for your interest! A single skin flue emits about 1kw per metre so the drop out of the working zone is actually pretty fast. The unit would be both less effective and more likely to soot up, so we don't do it in domestic settings. You'll perhaps have seen that a chap has four in series on an old 13kw stove in a workshop - but that's both inefficient so putting lots of heat up the flue, and easily dismountable for cleaning. It's a really important thing with flues that much of the heat going up them isn't waste - it's what makes them function, so the system has to balance the different properties very carefully.

      Thanks for this very interesting and most helpful explanation, Will. I’m on board now! I’m still determined to buy two, one for the large new vaulted ceiling room with views at one end of the bungalow, the other I’ll retro fit into the existing 5kw lounge wood stove at the opposite end of the house 👍🏻

    • @Recoheat
      @Recoheat 24 дні тому

      @@freeforester1717 Fantastic! The Recoheat certainly helps in vaulted rooms because the rotational action of the destabilised air flow in front of the stove drives the heat to the floor, and it'll typically heat about five times the volume of air as the stove and flue alone. If the insulation in the ceiling is good, the unit should do a very good job.

    I had one installed last year and, generally, I'm pleased with it. It gives out heat within minutes of the stove being lit.. before there wasnt much heat from the stove for 30-40 minutes. I've found it saves on wood as I dont need to fill up the stove as much. As for heating the whole house er, doesnt work for me and my house isnt huge

    • @Recoheat
      @Recoheat Місяць тому

      Thanks for the feedback Andy. Might be worth getting in touch to discuss, as we might be able to help improve the distribution. The biggest factor will obviously be the balance of the output of your stove with the volume of air you're asking it to heat, beside the convection flows that the warm air produced by the unit can piggy-back off.

    • @givemethejob3293
      @givemethejob3293 26 днів тому

      It would be good to hear a reply, I would have thought a slightly larger port on the reco heat would reduce the noise as its speed of the airflow from the port most likely causing it. Good device though.

    • @Recoheat
      @Recoheat 24 дні тому

      It's more of a shushing noise and is louder in the video because of the effect of the flow on the acoustic pick-up. It's also much noisier with a wire probe in the air flow. There is much discussion and attempts to give a clearer picture on other videos. The gauntlet is just because the airflow is bloody hot, as demonstrated.

    Another way to do this is if you have an Alexa device. All you do is buy an Avatar (or any other Alexa-compatible) smart plug from Amazon or eBay. Insert the RecoHeat pump plug into the smart plug and plug it into the socket and follow the simple setup instructions. I have my pump placed outside to draw in fresh air creating a positive pressure into the room and to eliminate the noise generated by the pump. With the above setup of using an Avatar smart plug I simply command Alexa to "turn on the RecoHeat" or "turn off the RecoHeat" or "Alexa, turn RecoHeat off in 3 hours" when I go bed. The latter command of the three is particularly useful as the heat from the bed of embers ensures the RecoHeat continues to push out hot air so why not benefit from the free heat late into the evening! If you have a stove the RecoHeat is a no-brainer you really are missing a trick. If you spend hundreds on logs anyway then it's worth the purchase. You will burn significantly less wood which will mean you make a saving in the long-run anyway.

    can it still work if my burner has a back boiler

    • @Recoheat
      @Recoheat Місяць тому

      It depends on the flue temperature. If that will peak at about 250C, you're fine, but if not, it won't be suitable. You need to be able to put 250C through the coil at least once a day for 30 minutes or so to burn off the particles and keep it clean. Some stoves with back boilers won't do that, so check the manufacturer's technical documentation - or just ask them.

    Hello from România, with this system heat a house with 4 rooms?

    • @Recoheat
      @Recoheat Місяць тому

      It depends on the layout, size, leakiness and heat output of the stove, but generally yes. In an open plan scenario it will probably heat four or five times further. The chimney effect of a staircase will actually increase that, as long as the heat source is sufficient for the significant increase in volume.

  • @H.Ali_08
    @H.Ali_08 Місяць тому

    I have had a youtube conversation with Zacharysweeps regarding the Recoheat, perhaps reach out to him regarding the Recoheat. He seems to think the product is a good idea but fans would work better and it would be good if the heat could disperse to other rooms. I explained the heat can spread to other rooms if the right techniques are used. Anyway i have recommended your channel to him. Given how many customers he sees regularly he may be someone that is worth reaching out to.

    • @Recoheat
      @Recoheat Місяць тому

  • @roontunes

    • @Recoheat
      @Recoheat Місяць тому

      The hiss is from the turbulence rather than the velocity, so the change in bore changes the action and effectiveness of the device. It's a white noise that's more affected by the acoustics in the room than anything else.

    Grief what an annoying hiss. Like a tyre continuously going down.

    • @Recoheat

      Yes, that's pretty much the sound and level. It's caused by the turbulence, so can't be removed without affecting the performance - at the moment. It might eventually be possible but is going to take more R&D than we currently have budget for.

    I’d like to fit the orifice with a 90degree copper elbow to blow the hot air up to the basement ceiling, into a floor grate to heat the room above. It’s the coldest room in the house and would benefit from the extra heat.

  • @erichimes3062
    @erichimes3062 2 місяці тому

    I am curious as to how much air can be forced out of that small opening to be enough to be effective

    • @Recoheat
      @Recoheat Місяць тому

      It's the action rather than the volume of the air. It'll be coming out at 2 to 3 litres a second (having expanded from 1 litre per second input) but it's the entrainment of the stove heat in the heated airflow and the roiling action that stirs the hot and cold air int he room together that makes it so much more efficient at heating the room. Once the much greater volume of air is warmed (at a rate about 5 times that of the stove alone, according to the engineering model) that increased volume is what drives the convection flows around the house, which is a process driven by the house rather than the device. So the efficiency and effectiveness is a combination of factors that are small at the outset, including the electrical input of just 17w.

      Had solid fuel for the past 30 years - the cost of smokeless fuel has gone up by 300% - given that about 50% of the heat goes up the chimney , a stove is not the best option. To ensure an optimum output , stoking a stove is a full time job - my multifuel stove was OK with coke - this is no longer made in the UK, all that is available is a molasses briquette of unspecified content which is mainly filler and gives out very little heat. A firing would take over an hour to give out any appreciable heat with this stuff. Hardwood logs are great if you can get them, but again, they are expensive and of uncertain seasoning. In summary, my multifuel stove is rated at 13Kw peak output - given a full firing this sort of output will last maybe 10 to 15 minutes - the average output is a lot less and is insufficient to heat an average home in the coldest months unless you are stoking it continually. At the time of writing, November 2024, solid fuel briquettes are £ 14.50 for 25 kilos , which would last 2 days , plus kindling etc. Not economic or convenient. A solid fuel stove is a great thing to have as an adjunct to central heating, to be used as an atmospheric focal point - but the dust, the smoky blowback, the labour involved in having it as the sole form of heating is only viable when there is no other alternative - believe me , the novelty soon wears off. Just fitted a Worcester Bosch 30kw combi - a revelation after many years of drudgery. The stove remains, cleaned and resprayed - usable in emergencies but with a fire effect LCD screen inside. Bliss....

    I’ve got an old baxi back boiler which has broken down. Is it possible to get it removed and replaced with a wood burner that also heats rads etc ?

      Yes, for sure. It would probably be quite a lot of work and you'll need a wet installer. The Hetas website has a list of installers where you can search for the type you need and your postcode.

    How much does it cost to run the heat pump in electricity and how noisy is it?

    • @Lord-Brett-Sinclair
      @Lord-Brett-Sinclair 3 місяці тому

      Second year running ours and Electricity cost is pence per day, the pump needs sitting on some sound absorbing material ideally in another room or loft if in a bungalow. The unit does emit a quiet hissing sound when hot air is coming out of the pipe if you are sat directly in-front of the fire . It really does make a huge difference to the comfort of the room by creating positive pressure and warming the space evenly. We recon we use 35-40% less fuel.

    • @hWoPL
      @hWoPL 3 місяці тому

      It is noisy.... pump is more annoying because vibrations, air pressure less but u still hear it anyway is more warmer in room and u use less fuel

    My pump has been placed outside which from my understanding of this video means my living room is getting outside fresh air from the RecoHeat. Can you do a video explaining the science behind the pressurised air being drawn into the house increases convenction and tips to maximise efficiency. A lot of these videos are targeted at prospective new customers but a specific tips and tricks video to inform established users of RecoHeat how to move air throughout the house and how the effects of the inhibiting factors can be reduced would be extremely useful. My living room where the stove is in the middle of the house. To the left there is a door leading to the kitchen to the right a small passageway leading to the upstairs. Would you recommend that I follow these steps in order: 1. Close doors in loving room and get the room nice a toasty. 2. Open first door to kitchen to ensure heat for the entire downstairs is evenly distributed first. 3. Then open the door to the corridor leading to the upstairs. I have been skipping step 2 which may be a reason why I am not benefitting from heat as much as i would like upstairs, however, i must stress the RecoHeat is a gamechanger through the fact that it increases my fuel economy and still does take the chill out of the upstairs air notwithstanding me skipping step 2. Last winter i reduced my radiator reliance by 80 percent. I burned my last log last night at 6.30 pm. Popped out later for 3 hours with RecoHeat running. Came back to mere embers but the RecoHeat was still jetting out very warm air still around 11 pm!! Best product ever and so much so that its extremely satisfying to use and almost become a hobby, sad or what!? 😂

    • @Recoheat
      @Recoheat 3 місяці тому

      That's awesome! Yes, your 3 step is ideal. If you want to increase convection to extremities, you can also crack open a window in the area you want to pull warmed air into when you open the door, and it will help to establish the flow. You can usually close it once the air is moving. Thanks very much for the enthusiasm!
